How Metal Gear Rising VR Missions Ruin Your Day

- I thought the 20 VR missions in the base game were gonna be some fun challenges with some difficultly sprinkled in... I thought horribly wrong.
Fun Fact: You might notice I completed 3 missions already with higher scores than what I got in the video. That's because 5 months before attempting this I randomly beat those VR missions with a guide. I replayed them without a guide in this video and got far worse results.

These missions are the worst thing about getting 100% achievements in this game. Trying to no damage armstrong and getting knocked into a checkpoint when you mess up and have to restart the mission is NOTHING compared to the suffering i got from these missions
Just use Steam Achivement Manager
@@OneUnintelligentSpork i already have legit 100% and bruh imagine using SAM
Yeah FR i got all the trophies on ps3 and this shit was way harder than the S ranks on revengence
@@bigbaronn7639 The only time SAM is morally justified is if the achievement doesn’t work
@@drneotech7254 i only used SAM for the tf2 youtube achievements
They really said, "oh you got gold on all these nightmare missions? Here, have a worse weapon than the one you get for just beating the game."
I'm just imagining how fun it'd be if you were rewarded a squeaky hammer/mace... _The Bonkening_
@@freshboy3968
A high-frequency.. hammer? That might work, might not, but the Long Sword should be better than the regular HF Blade, would be cool if you ACTUALLY got something cool for completing gold on these missions.
@@JimmyPizzaDeliveryhf hammer would work,do you not see an enemy with an hammer? it’s probably hf.
you get the best body armor for completing them all at bronze or higher
DO NOT try to 100% this game you will be left soulless and empty
Even more of a reason to do it, then.
I felt pretty good about it, but I recommend to either have skill or patience. I didn't have skill. Or patience. I just liked the game too much to give up 😅
Too late
Just finish all the basic one in gold. Now into the DLC ones... ( Pls send help )
Well I'm 59/60 (There's no platinum for Steam) and I didn't feel all that underwhelmed and mad, I sure raged a bit on some of these missions, but nothing that made me quit the 100%
You might wanna throw Sam's VR mission 4 in the same "Frustrating" folder. It can be characterized as: "They did NOT know when to stop."
That's really how you feel about my favourite VR mission in the whole game?
Sams 4th VR Mission took me 3+ hours to complete, broke me mentally, broke my will to continue but at least it helped me learn to parry better. 10/10 mission
dude that shit is easy and my 3rd favorite vr mission
@@Son0f-Sparda Did you do it on Revengeance?
@@Cerise__ vr missions automatically put the difficulty to hard
Came for Yakuza
Stayed for MGR
the mission with gekkos and grenades fucked me up, if next missions are harder I will die mentally
IMO the two hardest ones are mission 18 or 19 (forget which one), where you're locked in a tony box with many waves of enemies, ending with a GRAD, and the difficulty is set to revengeance so everything except the handy guys kills you in 1 hit, and mission 27 (the "kill everything with zandatsu" missison), for reasons that has to be experienced to be understood.
@@carljohan9265 You can roll the dice and have the wolf UG hit the heavy cyborgs for you, and you can also cheese the GRAD with sai. VR 27 is plain bullshit though, the map is dark for no fucking reason, and missing one single zandatsu means you failed, the enemy died too fast? Fail. The enemy killed themselves? Fail. One enemy friendly-fired another enemy? Fail. The RPG cyborgs jumped out of the map? Fail.
@@namieblinker5922 I discovered more ways to fail mission 27 than I'd like to admit.
And there's SO MANY enemies that can all result in a cheap fail too.
On the run where I actually succeeded, I almost failed on the very last enemy (a fenrir) by missing the zandatsu box, so I started frantically chopping vertically and somehow managed to connect with the hitbox on the pile of parts and finished with about 6 seconds to spare for the gold.
Man was that a relief.
I was looking forward to getting all VR missions gold rank. Then I realized they did the worst mistake you could ever do when it comes to challenge modes: Make it random. See, you have to do the SAME EXACT THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN and HOPE that the game rolls the dice in your favor. VR Mission 01 for example: Start off with slide into slice. Roll the dice to see if enemies randomly dodge off to the left. They did? Okay restart. They didn't? Great. Did their death animation take more than 5 seconds? Yes? Restart. No? Great. Did the Metal Gear Cow start off with a bullcharge so that you can instant kill it with a Zandatsu? No? Restart. Yes? Great. Now get lucky and try to get all of that in X amount of seconds.
Usually if you can't get the best time on a mission, you probably need to upgrade more for it to be reasonable. Getting the 'unique weapons' is integral for many of them, if you want to rank 1st and not just beat the mission.
The Pincer blades are super important for some of the missions as well as the Sai.
Getting gold in that mission felt like torture
It does feel like that at first and luck can definitely help you, but most of the time you can cover for luck with either skill or knowledge. For example, in VR mission 1, you don't really need to slide. Full meter means you can enter blade mode and zandatsu normal enemies directly. As long as you zandatsu them, you will recover your meter and be able to repeat the process. When an enemy is likely to move (e.g. they get hit by bullets), you should use horizontal slices.
But the zandatsu animation wastes time? No problem. Just hit the red target without starting the zandatsu. The energy cells will drop after the enemy finishes dying and you will have enough to replenish your meter.
The cow doesn't charge at you? Parry it towards a wall, so it can't dodge by jumping backwards. If you manage a perfect parry and have full meter, you will stun it and start a zandatsu.
The unique weapons will also help you and certain moves are more likely to stun enemies, so you can zandatsu them (the "dash-stab" of the blade combined with the sai stuns fenrirs pretty quickly and so does the 3 hit combo of the pincer blades).
The frustration is understandable though. I recently completed all VR missions with gold and some of them took me a lot of tries and checking strategies others used
I did it, took quite the attempts.
Bad for me believing this was just the only vr mission i could get a hard struggle
They saw the MGS2 VR missions and decided :
"Let's do that again !"
The worst one is easily M18, if you can't perfect parry the gorillas are basically RNG and then there's the wolves.
The Gorillas aren't that hard to parry. The wolves annoyed me though.
Imo the worst enemy in the entire game is the foot fetish MG, because even if you perfect parry, if they aren't in a corner, they don't get hit, so you gotta wait for them to charge to do an execution
@@Splinter-ge9pfIn Sam DLC, trying to parry their charge attack will make them jump instead, increasing the difficulty to the max.
@@Splinter-ge9pf There are 1 or 2 attacks where the cow doesn't dogde your parry, iirc, the one where he jumps up and stomps with both his feet, he stays stunned for a few seconds before moving again.
1:27 that parkour is the most easiest one, but every other mission is the definition of insanity.
I love how he knows what a Dwarf Gekko is (something that took me a whole year to learn), but calls the Gekko's "Bull Mechs". Its beautiful and I love it
Raptor?
@@UnconfirmedstatusNo, Raptors are the enemies with the blade feet and the dwarf Gekko in its chest. The ones that use the electricity blast. Dwarf Gekkos or “Tripods” are the tiny ball creatures woth three arms. The ones in Mistral’s fight that grab you. Normal Geklos meamwhile, the “Bull Mechs” as OP mentioned, are the tall enemies that have a tendency to charge you, and Moo like cows. (which is intended to make their targets easier to kill by mimicking an injured domesticated creature to evoke empathy according to the wiki)
@@terminalvelocityrunner2202 The Gekko were so scary on MGS4 but MGRR they’re almost harmless😂The Cicada & Cow sounds are intended to catch ppl off guard
@@jackainthere i could have sworn the noises were supposed to make aggressors less inclined to attack or something like that, but the wiki article isn’t exactly something i frequently read.
Still, mission accomplished, in the fact that they moo like that made my friend laugh a bit when he saw it first in our MGR play through. I lovingly called them “Cow Walkers”, since up until a few months ago, i didn’t know the actual name, lmao.
I know the names of all UG's, but I just call them cows instead of Gekkos because it's funny.
As someone who recently replayed the game and with only trophy/achievement left being Amateur Radio Operator, I can proudly say that gaining a gold rank on VR Mission 17, 18, and 19 was much more painful than S-ranking the boss fights on the highest difficulty.
When you just want custom body red
Owning the longsword is my biggest achievement.
Love your commentary over action games, you really put into words exactly how I feel when I get dunked on by the enemies in these games
These VR missions really make you go through the motions. Shits had me tearing up with how bs they were. Parries are a must. I don't even wanna talk about VR dlc 30. 😭😭😭
I'm struggling through these right now, so it's very comforting to see that others have feel the same way about these missions as I do. Makes me not feel so alone anymore.
Playing through mgrr vr missions can break any man. I got all S-ranks on the revengence difficulty but I can’t with vr lol
this video reminds me of all the pain i went through when i was trying to get all the achievements in MGR, but i finally got it and my steam account has a nice medal of it
There was a glitch on mission 19 that if you jump out of the area, you go invincible.
Maybe it still works.
They haven't patched this game in a long ass time, it still works.
If they remake the game they for sure will 100% patch it though.
@@JimmyPizzaDelivery I find it hard for them to go back on MGR, maybe there's some kind of internal conflict going on that prevents the studios from making a sequel or a remake.
@@namieblinker5922
Most likely, the last time we got news for MGRR was an anniversary, and that was it.
Just so you know, you can use Unique weapons in these challenges, so i really recommend you use Sundowners pincer blades, because it does Insane damage, if it doesn't 1 shot of course, and also you can tank attacks with it and you won't take more than 3% damage
These missions were brutal when I did them, but you know what's worse the later dlc ones being complete bs to do.
Still fun wouldn't do them again though
i feel like kaizen's refilling his sanity after losing all of it playing the kiwami climax battles
Oh nah. These VR missions are not a break. If you've played MGR you know they are complete fuckery.
with the weird cow robot thingies when they charge at you with the little kicking their foot back animation before it you can block that and do a QTE that if you do correct you kill it really quickly
I like these missions as difficult or finicky as they may be it reminds me of mgs2
Platinum games are notorious for making bonus stages really obnoxious. Trying to beat some of the secret fights in Bayonetta made me almost quit playing the game entirely
They clearly have a toxic mindset on difficulty. Someone really thinks the solution must objectively be "get good" and "you mess up you should instantly die" while throwing aggressive randomized bs your way.
Everytime I hear someone say bayonnetta is better than dmc all I can think is "one game doesn't spit I your face for trying higher difficulties"
@@PrincessNine Cope git gud
I had to complete VR17 and 18 twice because I forgot to do them just before doing a NG+
Stop with ur garbage excuses
I got gold rank in all vr missions on MGR, but I'm not even considering doing Bayonetta after I discovered that Platinum also worked on those.
I always say that the VR missions of this game are a deadly disaster. I'll train myself to do them too but I find them already complex.
*whispering* DL-VR missiooooooooooooons...
I love these missions. Glad you're enjoying them.
Coming from someone that had to do VR17 and 18 twice and had this completed
I broke 2 and a half of my controllers
OH MY GOD A KAIZEN MGR VID LETS GOOO
Only 6 missions give me ass kicking every time.
Do the jetream sam missions
i only remember one thing when it comes to how i feel about the gameplay
fuck stun
VR mission 19… god how I hated it.
At least the weapon you get at the end looks and feels heavy with the burden you were put through
I remember the geckos were so hard but there’s actually a trick to beat them quite fast lol like I can take them out within 10-20 seconds depending on the enemies around them
You poor soul
tip to kill a medium cyborg (the guys who spam attacks and parry): Slide and then enter blade mode when they parry, and then just hit him somewhere, where the sword does not cover the body, then you can execute a finisher on his stunned status.
the mission where it's like 5 or 6 waves of enemies that are insanely hard and you have to no hit them took me like 3 hours lol, probably the last one I think
>no-hit business
You mean VR mission 18? Unless we're talking DLC VR missions (that I haven't played). Definitely a satisfying bit to nail down.
@@MrZimnas yeah, non stop parries
The zandutsu only ones are so insanely bs
@@MrZimnas I literally cried on VR 18, took me too long to master the Mastiff perfect parry😭😭
@@hachelyd_i3232 You can cheese the Mastiffs by standing on the opposite side from where they spawn, they will do the big wall jump 80% of the time, that being very easy to read and perfect parry.
ruins your day when you’re trying to get gold medal
I still remember this pain in the backside when trying to get the platinum, didn't even bother with the DLC after completing the main ones
I'm on the first seven golds and i lost my sanity already, so yeah that's how it looks like
Was trying to get the virtually flawless trophy but i got stuck at a vr mission and broke the tv screen out of pure anger. Now i regret doing that.
you are my favorite youtuber
The VR missions should have just been bloody palace style gauntlets.
What I do with the stealth kills is I just mash B behind the enemy while ninja running at them.
My boy saw the holy spirit 6:22
I’ve played this game for a few years now I consider myself pretty decent but some of these missions are fucking insane
Whenever you see it.
This game is quite complete.
It quite easy like Mistral fight, slice soldier like they were paper...
Or..you have the Revengueance mode..and The Vr Missions.
Not to mention The Storm carrier arvhivement.
As good as this game is you can tell it was rushed quite a bit.
Thing is rushed doesn't explain why they set the parameters so excessively strict. They saw what they had and said "it's doable" in the loosest terms
@@PrincessNine totally right. Reminds me of really old nes games. You have to wonder what the designers had in mind.
damn day ruined
DL-VR missions are hell
As a MGR no life. HF longsword does Work 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️🤣🤣
what copy of ishin did you buy bro
Fun fact: in the one where you get to the point the quickest: im in first
Good thing I never did any of them
Bro try and complete it without getting hit
i thought i was just bad at the game
Real
i dare you to do dlc vr mission 27
Please do a video finishing yakuza zero climax battles that content was top quality and you can do it
10:30 this one was literal cbt
And 12:00
i swear mission 9 is impossible you have 20 seconds to get gold which is literally impossible as far as i can tell i took every shortcut and still never get under 20 seconds (even dodging every rocket) i'm tempted to learn game design just to rip into the code of this bullshit and alter the times to be actually fucking reasonable (that's the worst part the missions themselves are deceptively simple it's the timers that are bullshit)
Or use cheat engine.
WHO THE FUCK DESIGNED MISSION 7
You should play sekiro
i have fucking +800 hours in this game and istill did not finished all vr missions (mission 16 dlc) i mean i did it but cant get the 1st place is fuckin painful
Wtf 800 hours and me starting fiesta ve missions and complete gold and not start the campaing xdxd
bro u should play more mgr main mission and actually learn the game
9 months too late but that was what I was thinking as well.
Main mechanics you need to learn in MGR should be free-blade mode, parrying and attack patterns, the other things are transferable from literally any other hack & slash game.
Hah early
ay man ngl..... stop staling and get back on tha batman play though rn 😐
Just beat them all with the highest ranking, BOW BEFORE MY GLORE LESSER BEINGS !
