Hello, awesome channel! Two questions, 1) is it true that the same machinery / coin press imported in 1893 by pt Kruger from Germany for the Pretoria mint continued to be used to mint the Union coinage from 1923 and then for considerable time, and how long then? And 2) Griqa coins..., I suppose they are very rare and expensive, as I have never seen any offered on eBay... are still obtainable and how much would be for the cheapest type in collectible grade? Greetings from the other side of the pond directly in front of you (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and many thanks in advance for your answer!
Good day! Great questions. Yes, the "Oom Paul" press has been used for some time for the union coins, but not all of them. As far as I know, mostly the gold coinage. I need to dig a bit deeper on that... ...yes, the Griqua coins are VERY rare and demand a considerable premium. R20k + for a single coin is the typical rate, but they are offered very rarely. I am in contact with Morgan Carol an absolute legend on these coins. I plan to make a a video soon on these illusive coins. Thanks for your interest. I have discovered your channel now as well.
Very enjoyable I like the way SA went from £1 to 2 rand, that allowed for the 3d to become 2 1/2 cent and the 6d to become 5c, as the UK and Ireland went from 240d to 100 new pence only the 6d circulated as 2 1/2 new pence for a couple of years.
District Six... Thats where my grandfather had a butcher and collected lots of coins. When he passed on i took over hes hobby😊
