TO BE - Past & Present Tense - Affirmative Sentences

  • TO BE in the Past Tense and Present Tense in English.
    All examples are in affirmative sentences (no negatives or questions) as this is a first introduction to using To Be (was and were) in the past tense.
    We quickly look at simple time expressions such as:
    Present: now, right now, and at the moment
    Past: yesterday, last night, last week, last month, last year
    We also look at joining sentences in the Past with sentences in the Present tense with the conjunction BUT. BUT is used to contrast or show a difference or change in what has already been
    mentioned.
    e.g. They were noisy last night, but they are quiet now.
    There are many examples sentences using WAS and WERE.

    Thanks a lot, Woodward. So is it correct that the norm of using pronouns to represent various subjects when different forms of a verb are shown in verb conjugations applies to all tenses? For example, as the verb 'to be' conjugates as 'he/she/it is' in simple present tense, and 'you/we/they were' in simple past tense, so we can say 'Jack is...'(Jack=he) and 'David and I were...'(David and I=we), right?

    • @WoodwardEnglish
      @WoodwardEnglish  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, your examples are correct

    • @summerxia3163
      @summerxia3163 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WoodwardEnglish Thank you, Woodward. So is it right for me to think that when choosing a right form for a verb, no matter what tense it is in, the form of the verb depends on what pronoun I can substitute for the subject of the verb?
      For example, in the present perfect tense, since "eat" conjugates as “you/we/they have eaten.”, I can also say “You can Jack have eaten.” , as “You and Jack=you”?

      Been is used for present/past perfect. It tells me that it’s something that has been done in the past that is relevant to the present. Or that something has happened in the past with no specific time. Being is used for actions happening now.
