Silent Hill 2 is an upcoming survival horror game developed by Bloober Team and published by Konami. It is a remake of the 2001 game of the same name, originally developed by Team Silent, a group within Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo (KCET).

The voice actor for james nailed this role man. Very few games get me to emotionally. He should be one of the nominees for best performance of the year.
I love that they added 2 new endings. This one in particular shows us a James with a little less sense of guilt

It's kinda cool how this ending is kind of a remake of the In Water ending, having james get his ''forgiveness'' from Mary herself instead of the letter before driving into the lake.
Of course it could be just a hallucination because he is even more broken than in the OG in water or maybe even Maria, but whatever it is, he uses it to justify what he is about to do, asking if she'll be waiting for him in the afterlife and responding she always was. Very Nice

Let's give James 'forgiveness' when he should actually be coming to terms that he killed her and did not 'free her from the pain' as he once told himself. It was a selfish choice that drives him to kill himself out of guilt and shame.
Once everyone is out of the hype I hope we can all see this clearly for the downgrade it is story wise rather than just be impressed with the visuals.
This is an additional, new ending to the game - kind of a lighter version of the "In water"-ending. All the original endings are still there, so I don't see how this is a "downgrade" in any sensible meaning of the word.
The new "In water" is actually even bleaker now, since there is no final conversation with Mary. It is an antithesis of forgiveness or closure. In the new "Leave" ending, James doesn't even attempt to justify his actions like in the original.
He also clearly apologizes to her here, not justifying his actions. Forgiveness was always part of SH2, even the original "In water". Only in "Maria" ending is James being truly selfish.
Criticism is fine, but coming up with stuff out of thin air for the sake of it is a different thing.

Also the story is about James and his journey to come to terms with his guilt (or not). Forgiveness by himself is what it is about, but in this ending he's not forgiving himself and at the same time doesn't appear consumed with guilty...he sounds like he's just a normal amount of sad. Mary gives some type of forgiveness, but we know the truth of the original is far more complex than that, but he is still getting a type of forgiveness without reading the letter that should have allowed him to move on. If it ended then with a version of Leave (maybe going by himself and 'Mary') that would make more sense, but for a lesser version of in water just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
To make the scene work they should have written this version of Mary as guiding him to that fate. Have her reassuring him he knows what he needs to do. That his true forgiveness from her will only be in death (hell could even have it show it's Maria at the last second). Also James would have to be more visibly distressed to sell it. Have him so consumed by his guilt and sorrow that he is susceptible Mary's influence.
How it is currently doesn't add up to a satisfying conclusion so even though it is additional it is taking away from the experience. The best thing I can say about it is that at least they had the sense to hid it in NG+.
You're clearly too in the hype because if you thought criticism was fine you would realize I didn't just 'come up with stuff out of thin air for the sake of it is a different thing'. I like how you describe the new versions of the original endings as having more flaws but somehow cannot see the flaws in this new ending. How do you feel about the new Mary letter VO?
@@spectersmusic Next time be more spesific in your comments, because it wasn't clear whether you were talking about this particular ending or the entire game. Or about forgiveness in this ending or the in the whole story in general. Clear writing goes a long way to avoid confusion.
And don't talk down to me. I was skeptical about this project from day one - though I am happy to have been proven wrong. The amount of mental gymnastics and up-to-interpretation/taste nitpicks you pull make it clear that you hype up your own "critical thinking" skills.
This remake remakes a lot with great fidelity, going up and beyond simple visual facelift. When it adds something it is largely in spirit of the original. It resuffles somethings and recontextualizes others, making them more logical in whole - In Water and Maria are more concise as endings, for an example. It does somethings in ways that are simply different, neither "better" or "worse". What one version lacks in comparison it makes up for in other ways and so on.
There are somethings I would have done differently, but they are mostly irrelevent to the larger story, minor nitpicks or interpretative choices. I would have made this ending the new In water ending because I don't see the reason for two versions of essentially the same ending, but I wouldn't call it a "downgrade", since it doesn't take away from anything.
And that VO is completely fine. It's simply different, but achieves the same goal.
