I'm a former international track-and-field athlete, a long jumper. Mahuchick is one of my favourite female athletes. When she cleared 2.07 so cleanly, I thought:" She would have cleared 2.10 with that jump". And I shouted inwardly "go for the world record". And sure enough, she broke the world record, with the slightest of brushes on the bar, similarly to how Konstantinova cleared 2.09 in 1987.

  • @BB_usmc
    @BB_usmc 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +246

I started following Mahuchikh when she was around 19 years old, and she was already a very impressive high jumper then with so much potential. I predicted that if she doesn't suffer from an injury, she would eventually challenge the 2.09 Meter record. In spite having so much faith in her abilities, it was still shocking when she finally cleared 2.10. So happy for her.

As a Bulgarian, I'm a bit sad that this record was broken, because it was the last world record set by a Bulgarian athlete. The state of our athletics isn't great at the moment and I don't think we'll set another world record for a while.
But it was totally deserved and congratulations to the new record holder. Her jump seemed so effortless, I hope she produces something similar in the Olympics.

There was another great Bulgarian high jumper from that era. L.Andonova set the WR at 2.07 but Stefka took it to 2.08 and eventually 2.09 while also winning global titles. The other Bulgarian I remember from that era was the triple jumper Markov who almost jumped 18m at the same 1987 Rome world championships. He just missed the WR.

Congratulations Yaroslava!! You are a true champion! I first saw you jump as a young 18 year old in Doha with an astonishing 2.04 that brought you a World Silver. Then the world saw you jump indoors at 2.06 and we all knew and believed you had the potential and the destiny to break this longstanding and seemingly insurmountable WR of 2.09. And today you did it, and you did it with the joy and the effortless style that is your true gift. The bar at 2.10 seemed barely an obstacle as you took flight and in the blink of an eye you were over!! So proud of you, the world is proud of you and you have given your fellow Ukrainians cause to celebrate!! You did it!!! Congratulations again!!!

What a week for sport, Mark Cavandish breaks the most incredible record in world sport, 35 stage wins of the Tour de France, beating Merck’s record, a record we all thought would never be beaten esp in the modern era where standards are so high and the differences between athletes so close. Then 8 times world champion wins the UK Grand prix, against so much odds, esp when the establishment in motor racing are against him. By this time I have now lost my voice from screaming at the T. Now blondie, Yaroslava Mahuchikh, broke the women’s high jump record that has stood since 1987. The Slave broke a record no one thought could ever be broken. A record that was set before all the modern drugs were available and yet still stood while all the modern drugs were being taken, now with all the testing and the reduced number of drugs available, most of us thought this record would stand forever. She is literally the perfect athlete for this event and I can see her break the magic seven-foot barrier, she is still so young, the perfect stature and the perfect personality to achieve this. When I watched her break it live, I ran around the outside of the house celebrating, my neighbours already think I am crazy so no damage there. This year just can't get any better.

I first spotted Yaroslava Mahuchikh when she was 17 and jumping 1.95-1.98 fairly regularly and making appearances in Diamond League meetings. It occurred to me that she would definitely be one to watch. The number one Ukrainian - and world number 2 at the time - was Yulia Levchenko, for whom there was a lot of enthusiasm. Of the two, I thought Mahuchikh's late teenage performances put her in a better position. Whereas Levchenko had been stuck for three years at 1.92, Mahuckikh was powering through but she was still very young.
Then came the World Championships in Doha and Mahuckikh not only jumped 2.00 metres in a major event but set a new world junior record of 2.02 and then upped it further to 2.04 in the same event, finishing with a silver medal. She had turned 18 only two weeks earlier. A couple of years ago she jumped 2.06 indoors. Fast forward to this week and it was at this event in Paris that she upped her personal best to 2.07. Then she jumped 2.10 on her first attempt and the rest is history.
At the time of her Doha silver medal I described her as 'a once in forty year talent' and I've stood by that, even if her successes seemed to be less consistent than I expected. That said, there was really nobody I could see seriously challenging her when it came to outright height. If anyone was going to do it, it would be Mahuchikh.
And so it goes. If anyone is going to break the old seven foot mark, it's probably her. But world records don't come easily and the fact that it took 37 years to break Kostadinova's record is something of a pointer to what we can realistically expect. It might not sound like much but 3 cms is a long way in an event like the high jump.
For the record, I was actually able to name all ten of the women who have done 2.05 or better without looking them up. I think I have the heights right:
Babakova 2.05 (her national record was broken when Mahuchikh jumped 2.07 and then again when she jumped 2.10)
    Chicherova 2.07
    Hellebaut 2.05
    Kostadinova 2.09
    Andonova 2.07
    Mahuchikh 2.10
    Vlasic 2.08
    Lasitskene 2.06
    Bergquist 2.08 (indoors)
    Cloete 2.06
    Correct me if I'm wrong.

I really think that when records and metaphorical barriers are broken through in an event with an actual physical barrier (the bar) like the high jump and pole vault, it encourages other athletes to explore a bit more and push harder. It alleviates the "is it possible?" question to an extent.

I had the same thought. Beside being very happy for Yoraslava who I appreciate a lot, I'm very happy for the sport of track and field because her breaking that barrier will allow others to explore higher and we would possibly see better jumps from at least a few athletes in the near future.

I would be so happy even with Yaroslava’s 2.07… but 2.10 just blew my mind when I saw it in the news!!

As an Italian who got to witness, live on TV, Rosemarie Ackerman and Sara Simeoni compete at the 12th European Athletics Championships in Prague (1978), where Sara tied her own world record of 2.01, established days earlier at a meet in Brescia (Italy), and Rosemarie (first woman to clear 2 m in history) almost cleared the same height in her last attempt - the bar stood there, oscillating, from what I recall as an endless second, and then fell - I can only applaud Mahuchikh's new world record.

I’ve kept an eye on her for awhile now. It’s been something to watch such a humble athlete work and achieve such a great accomplishment. Congratulations 🍾 🎉👊🌹
She’s got to be the favorite for GOLD in Paris!! And the World’s beyond that.
All that being said I think it will be the next generation of women athletes that leap that 7’ mark. But hey stranger things have happened and right now 🤷‍♂️ who knows.

Take notice that both girls set WR at the age of 22 and their height is the same 180 cm.
