- "The present 'Eight Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord' need no explanation or justification as such even though they have heretofore never been adequately dealt with. With the help of Britain's distinguished harpsichordist and scholar, Mr. Lionel Salter, Mr. Julian Olevsky and I have come to be persuaded of the authenticity of these works and of the true fulfillment of the composer's intention which we are achieving by presenting them in the present Violin and Continuo version. If the listener would like to be informed of the nature of the evidence which led us to be so convinced, I am delighted herewith to quote the major part of it on behalf of Mr. Olevsky, myself and Westminster Records.
First, these eight sonatas are the only ones in the vast collection at the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice which are possessed of the actual figures for the basses (the sonatas in question are in the Longo edition, but the figures of the bass are omitted). This, in accordance with 18th Century practice is indicative of the virtually irresistible conclusion that a solo instrument was intended to participate in performing these works when allied to the following: they are very early works, dating from a period well before Scarlatti began to explode the majority of standard musical traditions and while he must still have been a fledgling nourished by these traditions. Consequently writing for harpsichord and solo instrument would have been very much in his pattern. It will also be noticed that these are multi-movement sonatas, a form we know not to have been Scarlatti's common practice when writing for harpsichord solo. Furthermore, some of the passage work in the upper voice suggests string music and is completely unwieldy for the right hand of the harpsichordist. This cannot be interpreted as bad instrumental writing on the part of a composer who, from his earliest days, must have been one of the most phenomenal keyboardists of all time.
Finally, it is noteworthy that there exist actual bowing marks which cannot possibly be regarded as phrasing indications and which Mr. Olevsky assures me prove eminently feasible on the violin. We therefore are pleased to offer this recording of the 'Eight Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord Continuo' and hope it shall be deemed an appreciable contribution to the recorded repertoire of Domenico Scarlatti."
