Lurcher Racing in Ireland

  • A few clips of some lurcher & terrier racing in Ireland. These races are held at shows and game fairs over the summer months when the hunting season has stopped. most people use race their lurchers in the summer months because it's fun to enter and entertaining to watch.
Straight Racing is exactly what it sounds like, a number of Lurchers running together after a mechanical lure in a straight line. The dogs each wear different coloured collars, and are usually segregated into different sizes and coat textures for example under 21 inch rough coat, under 21 inch smooth coated. The racing can take place over any distance, however, a one hundred metre sprint is usually the shortest distance covered especially if there are large dogs involved. In a clean race the first dog over the winning line is judged to be the winner. It is always important to leave a good distance after the finishing line in order for the dogs to avoid impact injury.
Lurchers can run in excess of 20 miles per hour and some weigh in excess of 90lbs so safety is a paramount consideration in any running event. Where possible netting is used along either side of the track, if this is not possible the track is roped off. Straight racing is an event, which can be entered by both pet and working Lurchers. it's fun to enter and entertaining to watch.

I have a rescue Lurcher who came from Ireland to England as many do. He was 5 years old and found on the streets. The Dog's Trust rehome many Lurchers from Ireland who are abandoned. He was a nervous wreck when he came to us, very timid and could hardly walk around our garden he was so scared. 4 months later he is a very happy dog and exhibiting natural Lurcher behaviours, mad running and play and lots of sleeping. He's so gentle and loving but hates other dogs. He still quivers with fear when he sees one, and wants to attack. He had to wear a muzzle when out but as we have a large secure garden he can get up to full speed in our garden and has made his own racetrack. It's taken lots of love to get him back to normal doggy behaviour. We're still working on the reactivity to other dogs. He's gentle with small children and is a beautiful dog. He's a bit needy for attention and doesn't like to be alone but is improving in every way every day. Such a joy to see him happy. He has stolen our hearts. By the way, he's also an expert thief, such a gentle mouth. I suspect he may have been trained to steal wallets. If you want a rescue dog there are many from Ireland who need homes.

Conor Rooney Hi Conor, that’s correct some of the races are from the Shane’s Castle Game Fair. Some of the other races are from various other dog shows around the country.

What is it your using for them to chase?

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

They will chase pretty much anything. Some people use abit of fur or even some plastic tags / fliers

Friends, I love lurchers! Greyhound mixed with other breeds. I like the aesthetics inherited from greyhounds. LONGYLIUM, CURVILIENT, MUSCULOUS body, short hair, with varied and beautiful colors. But the greyhounds' temperament does not have what I want and I look for it. I want a dog with a territorialist sense, at least, react to the arrival of strangers in my home. Does the greyhound mix German Shepherd dog produce a good watchdog? What do you say ? Or do you know of another mix that produces an animal with the appearance of greyhound but with guard dog temperament? Thank you very much

Hamilton Gomes Da Silva to be honest, I personally wouldn’t be too sure. I’m sure one of my viewers will be able to advise better than me.

Hi I have a lurcher with almost identical markings and looks as the one in this video.. at 3.05 there is a still picture .. my dog came from Ireland I am wondering, Is this kind of marking common ? you literally have to spot the difference

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This was took at the game fair in Moira in County Down. It would have been 7/8 year ago. It wouldn’t actually be that common type of marking. What part of Ireland did your dog come from?

How? No harm ocurrs to any animal, and they're doing what their ancestors were bred to do. The dogs seem to be having a good old time

Gumaro R. Villamil the dog at 1:58 broke it leg

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The dogs are having a great time or they wouldn’t run. Although as you can see there was a freak accident that occurred. Although all dogs were ok and fine.

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think that the dog did damage it’s leg, although I’m not sure how bad it was. I think all Dogs were ok.
