Your laudatory comments about the qualifications of career American Foreign Service Service Officers for the post of Vatican Ambassador has a lot of merit. My father was one such intelligent, savvy and diligent person! He worked in Milan during the early part of his career in the 1930's. It is so seldom I hear anything kind about career FSO's. Most people don't know they exist. You definitely made my day! If my father had been nominated as ambassador to the Holy See (he really wouldn't have been) there would have been a huge learning curve, since he was a Protestant, and wouldn't have understood anything about why Catholics do things the way they do. I think being a Catholic in good standing should be one of the qualifications.🤩

Thank You John Allen for your fair and thorough reporting. Going to Rome in the fall and don’t know whether to clap at the papal audience or just sit quietly and pray when he arrives.

The most ridiculous excuse i saw in the media was the fact Italian isn't he's first language and he doesn't know what hes talking about. Which is ridiculous considering he speaks the language for decades

Very sad and disappointed in our Pope. Why these comments weren't meant for public ears, it shows a disposition of heart toward women that feels in sharp contrast to what he has said he desires for women in the Church. There is no way to to misunderstand a connotation that 'soft' is womanly (I know soft men who aren't gay and strong women) and therefore undesirable and that gossip is a woman's thing. Really? I've heard more gossip from men than women in my life. I think women's efforts at building social networks via 'small talk' -not because we aren't capable of deep intellectual conversation but because this small talk serves a very specific social purpose-is often misconstrued and assumed to be gossip. I am praying for the gifts of Wisdom and Prudence for our Holy Father.

First of all, no priest at any level should engage in even borderline inappropriate language. It's simply not sacral. That stated, now whole parts of the Church have begun to drift into the world of PC. Which like everything since '64 just drive more people away from the Church. More empty pews, more empty or under filled Churches.

The pope needs prayer, as do the people he referred to in his meeting.

And about the idea of the USA ambassador to the papal states having to be Catholic?! I mean, *belief-wise alone* Lucifer is one of the most devout believers in those teachings, and if accepting the teachings of the church is what makes one *catholic*, Heaven help us all!
I mean, if the inner politburo of Hell itself is really full-scale believers in all parts of Catholicism: that status of being a member of the church means *nothing at all*, period! *Especially* about salvation for crying out loud!

To use these kind of words, if you are not a native, italian speaker, you have to hear them around you.....Who are the pope's 'clique' that he hears talk like this? I have lived in Italy for 40 years and it would not even come to my mind to use these expressions as you can make yourself just as well understood with 'gay' or 'homosexual'. Are Pope Fancis' friends homophobic & misogynist and to what extent is he influenced by them?

Best discussion of the “faggot” story I’ve yet heard… well done - I’ve been waiting to hear this and it sorted out all of the odd thoughts I’ve heard about it here and there. Theory 2 is obviously ridiculous

Well if we can get by the off-color language the Pope used, the message was; The priesthood isn't a closet for gay men to hide in , it's a place for men who have been called to do God's work. Rumors and gossip can fester resentment and confusion. This is not something you want in the Church. The language the Pope used was messed up but the message was not.

The 'message' ? His actions speak much louder than his words.
Moreover his words alone are invariably self-contradictory.

      1. Fiducia supplicans.
      2. Allows transgender people to be baptised with their preferred pronouns.
3 Regular invitation for Roman transgender sex workers to the Vatican for lunch.
3 Many and frequent appointments of LGPTQ+ - friendly bishops to senior Vatican positions
4 Many private audiences for Fr James Martin with immediate answering of his dubia and Freancis' personal appointment of Fr James Martin to the Sos.
Etc etc etc etc ad nauseam.

Apparently the Pope's infamous potty-mouth is now merely 'questionably' homophobic and misogynistic. I agree that he's also infamously capricious and vindictive.
Meloni is not particularly conservative but very much plays safe.
She is an adept politician and I suspect her call for an executive vote is likely popular.
Zuppi's expressed sentiments as reported here were reasonable but suit the status quo position which is a political position. So he seems to have the same inept diplomatic tendencies as Francis
