Hello. You can use warm colors to indicate shadows and highlights as well. If you want to increase the contrast, you may choose use complements in the highlights and shadows. In this case one color would warm and the other cool, ex. blue and orange. (I usually do use blue when creating shadow, but I didn't in this video)
Your rose looks almost to good to be real. It looks like one of those things in a dream that you know is fake, but want it so badly to be real. Great job.
You make drawing a rose look so easy. I'm taking a 6 day trip to GA & am thinking of bringing watercolor pencils to draw landscape paintings. Your videos are really great using this painting media. Thank you.
I have been drawing flowers for a while...but never thought of the nature of line as I applied the color! Thank you. It will help me achieve a more believable image.
I've never drawn with color before. I always felt the way I did it ruined the art. Stuck to black and white for years. But I just ordered a full set of colored pencils. You've inspired me.
One last point of fact...I am a disabled Veteran and am trying to get back into pastels and color abstractions based on Fractals, and Color theory techniques. I was awarded employee of the quarter at Boeing, from among 110 other illustrators, for my improvement of the 737 Maintenance Program Graphics. I received letters from around the world thanking me for this project and it's improvement I have over 10,000 hours in art, and as a Teacher have taught 18k students how to do Calligraphy
I have the 150 pack and do have a small amount of breakage. I read somewhere a tip about putting the broken pencil in the microwave for only 5 seconds. Only do one pencil at a time also. I tried it and it works. Not always on the top broken piece though. If you microwave it longer than 5 seconds, bad things happen to your pencils. The microwave warms the wax just enough to allow the wax in the leads to reseal themselves together.
The Highlights are usually a lighter color of the base. So in this case it would probably be more of a lighter red or pink for the highlights or just go white if you want to.
In this drawing, I'm using brown textured paper. The greater the tooth (texture) of the paper, the more the texture will play into the finished drawing.
hello I am not totally sure on this I have been working on colored pencil technics for a while but when I do it I burnish very hard but before I do my final color I like to put all the other colors needed in it like black brown are what ever you are using, I am not to sure on how to answer your question for his video but I thought I would try to help a small portion.
how do you know what colors to do. For example to use a brown instead of a dark red for the shadows? What should I use if I want to create a shadow if the main color is blue.
Have you tried baking your prismas? I've read on several blogs that pencil artists have used an oven to fuse the cores back together. They are wax-based....
I'm a little nervous about using colored pencils after reading that they break easily by some of your viewers. How can I sharpen them without a lot of breakage?
How do you keep your prismas from breaking? I have a 72 pack but every time I try to sharpen them the lead breaks easily, or i get a nice point, please help?
Hi. I really love you're drawing and can you please tell me what kind of papaer do you use and what coloredbpencil do you uses? I just wanna know because i really love to draw but my colors made my drawing worse..... so thank you 😊
since brown is a colour and black is a value, brown looks more natural than black and it doesn't make colours dirty and lose their strength, though, you have to be careful, too much brown can make your colours look "muddy" C:
In realistic drawing contour lines are really just there to map out the basic plan of the drawing. In real life no object has a black contour going around its outside. Objects are defined by tones, and like Victoria said, brown is part of the color scheme of a rose, whereas black is not.
+Astra Maez tip number 1 : charcoal is awesome . better then colors . tip number 2 : charcoal is cooler . black and white . that is all there is . no need for colors .
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you want "cool" highlights and shadows because the main color of the rose is "warm?" I'm still working on my understanding of color theory....
Does anyone know where to buy Prisms colored pencils a little bit cheaper? Or a similar less expensive alternative? I would really appreciate any input. Thank you!
Thank You for this art tutorial site! I am 63 and a retired Illustrator from the Boeing Airplane Co. in Seattle, WA. I am subscribed, but don't know how to get to the actual site where I can use the pull-downs and get to work. Also, I am not a computer Geek, and do not have a Blog, a Blackberry, or and I-Pad. As a matter of fact, I don't even know how to make and send a video to save my life! I would like to send you or the site, stills of my work! Do you have a way I can do this?
I'm sorry I know this is an older video, but I'm extremely curious how hard you're pressing your pencils. I tend to draw too hard. Are you drawing really lightly over every layer? Is the end result smooth as if a lot of layers, or still sort of transparent?
Kevin Ristie You can buy Prismacolor color pencils at Michaels Craft Store, online or in store. You can also get them at any art store that sells name brands. This brand of pencils can be sold individuallly or in sets.

out of all people i seen drawn a realistic rose ,, yours is the best one thaT ive seen.

That's the nature of the beast. The softness of the pencil creates the nice layering effect, but also leads to breaking.
I am using Prismacolor Pencils and I am working on brown textured paper. I'll be doing a review of Prismacolor pencils, hopefully this weekend.
This was so helpful! Especially the leaves as I'm working on a rose right now as well! I would have never thought to use blue as a shadow. Thank yoh
It is obvious you are no ordinary human. You are a master

I just finished a drawing a rose just like this in a project im doing for a friend I love doing roses because they come out so well in colored pencil.

Can someone explain to me why he used brown for contour lines and not black? Or does it not matter? Just curious.

Amazon has them cheap as well
Wish.com has them fairly reasonable. Best I've seen so far.
Amazon has 72 Prismacolor premier for $32
does the white color affect on the picture if i use white paper?
Yes, using white paper changes the color because it is a much brighter color and will the colors will show up differently!
Kika Kuma thanks but what kind of paper is that?

I love your rose
hard to follow but fun to learn
Black makes a really dark out line that's why brown is better
perfect thanks!
Fine Art. These are painted with normal pencils and not Prismacolor or something like that.
