Good comparison, I prefer Santa Teresa indeed.
By the way I suggest you to try Diplomatico Seleccion de Familia...that is my favourite one.
Another fantastic one is the Ron Dos Maderas 5+5.
On the podium also the Rhum J.M. XO from Martinique, spectacular!

You should try Cuban Rum ( not diluted much in sugars ) and you will feel the difference. Ron Santiago 11 years Extra Añejo or Havana Club Selección de Maestros, I’ve tried that Zacapa and I just got hit and tried the Santa Teresa, very good rums but they are heavy In sugars. Nevertheless good rums.

Santa teresa is my go to rum (gran reserva) which is a tier down from the 1796 but it is still excellent for most parties and events. I do get the 1796 for more fancy occasions. I actually visited the facility where santa teresa is made a few times and its a beautiful place, very traditional, they really care about the product.

I agree with you the taste is decent but nothing all that special. Now the packaging is a whole new story. I wish the rum match up to the packaging. The color is beautiful but it just needs a bigger flavor. I read where it's made to be a dry style and I would say that is accurate but I will pass once mine is empty. The Dos Maderas 5+5 will be better money spent.

When it comes to Zacapa 23-it's definitely not "my cup of tea" due to much sweetness. I prefer rums on the drier profile cause consuming tons of sugar ruins people's health and sugar is more dangereos for health than drinks of spirits (by measure of course)

  • @Geedeecee1

Not a fan of either rum, but there is a special place reserved in hell for Zacapa for a number of reasons.
    1. They add about 20 grams per litre of sugar, so clearly hiding some god awful harshness (Should it still be called rum with that much sugar added?).
    2. Fooling your average consumer by putting a 23 on the bottle making consumers think it's aged 23years when it's actually solera aged. (I'm a firm believer that the age statement on the bottle should be the youngest rum in the bottle, which is the rule for whisky)
    3. It is massively overpriced. A rum that is quite young with so many additives could easily be sold for $20 a bottle, but just like "premium" vodka, the marketing department have done a fantastic job in brainwashing the consumer into believing this is a premium rum.

I am a long time Zacapa 23 drinker. Have loved the taste even though there is a bit of a burn. In the last 2 years I’ve received 2 bottles of Zacapa XO as gifts and I thought I was in heaven. No burn and fantastic taste neat.
On a recent trip to Punta Cana the resort was out of XO so I asked for something similar. Fir half the price they gave me a Santa Theresa 1796. WOW is all I’ve got to say.
