one of my top five female vocalist from L.A. marilyn mccoo can you react to wedding bell blues a cover from another great vocalist laura nyro check her out !
Shut up woman. YOU are singing toooo much. Shut up.
Marilyn McCoo is legit one of the most underrated and underappreciated vocalists. Just so velvety and rich. 5th Dimension had a good run. A lot of good music and a lot of cheese (no muffins) as well. I wish they got the attention today that other artists of the time get. Great reaction.
She didn't even to be the lead singer. She was (pulled) forced into it and well good for us I'd say.
There were a lot of underappreciated artists kare carpenter Olivia Newton John among others but she and the group were very popular
After the Fifth Dimension parted ways, the marital and business partnership of "Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr." continued on as a duet, and had another string of monster hits, and they just had a concert in Redlands CA, accordting to their website, and Facebook. Happy early birthday to Marilyn, who celebrates exactly one month from today (Sept. 30). The interwebs say she will be 81.
When this song came out, I was a dumb teenager who thought they were boring. I now appreciate the beauty of this song, and The 5th Dimension as a whole.
Ditto here lol
I was a preteen and had the biggest crush on Marilyn after seeing her performance on the Ed Sullivan show, so I just loved anything she sang. Let the Sunshine,
Same here...such perfection and passion!
interesting i was 13...LOOOOVED ITTHEN LOVE IT NOW.
Are you wacky. This is one of the songs you wanted to dance with the hottest chick in the place.
McCoo got lost in a sea of great music in the time frame and never got her due. She a top 5 female vocalist of all time. Smooth as silk.
Yes. Marilyn Mccoo's voice is pristine and technically wonderful. However, she also brings so much raw emotion to this song that makes her performance moving and soulful.
I am 73 years old, and have been a fan of Marilyn and The Fifth Dimension for over 50 years. She is my favourite female singer, and without doubt the prettiest singer EVER.
Thank you for your lovely comment. 🤗💖 Hope to see you on our livestream in less than 1 hour as we are doing Anne Murray reactions and many, many more: th-cam.com/users/live41ZNlGfjjcE
We can also understand every word she sang. Enunciating the words clearly is also very important.
It's so true, Maggie! Marilyn McCoo has one of the purest and most beautiful voices Pop has ever had. The 5th Dimension released a string of great 60's Pop classics that perfectly encapsulate the feeling of the mid to later years of the decade.
This song echoes the events of the late 60s/early 70s when divorce suddenly seemed a better option for so many long time marriages. Not only did it become easier to separate, it was at the height of the "free love' era when middle aged men felt the need to do what couldn't be possible in earlier times. It was also at this time when women were first having the understanding that they didn't have to put up with an unhappy relationship. For many, divorce wasn't always the best solution but it was a part of the times we lived in. In the end, better to live alone than to suffer in an unhappy, or unhealthy, relationship.
Who doesn't love the golden voice of Miss Marilyn McCoo.
Marilyn McCoo is a legend and underrated but definately in the top10 of all time female singers.
She said in an interview that she was taught to enunciate so the lyrics were clear and boy was she good at that !
Well, my effin' Gawd, Maggie ... this is the bloody Fifth Dimension, singing Bacharach and David! It don't *GET* any better than this!! And you're listening to Marilyn McCoo on lead, who could sing the _phone book_ and make people love it! (I have all this on original vinyl, and would *NEVER* take for it!)
Thank you for this. Her voice is FREAKING AMAZING. I've loved the 5th since I was a boy and they were still making hits like this. ALL their albums are worth listening to.
People forget that at the time these great singers had a deep well of material to work with. In this case the song was by written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David who wrote hit after hit for Dionne Warwick. So be sure to give kudos to the writers of these classic songs. Without this material these singers would be like a Ferrari without gasoline.
The lead female singer, Marilyn McCoo has a gorgeous voice, and her husband, Billy Davis Jr., also in the group, has a wonderful voice too. In the 70's, they had a few songs as a duet. This is a classic song by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.
Nerd out as much as you want. One of the best reactions you've done!
I saw them in the early 70s and that's when I fell in love with Marilyn McCoo. She had many more hits with them and on her own. Fantastic voice!!! You need to check out, If I Could Reach You. She is featured and it will blow you away!!!
She's pretty easy on the eyes, too!
This was when music was universal. They crossed over. I was just a little kid. But, I do remember that I liked them. Now a days, it is all about image. Back then, it was all about good music. We didn't care if you were old enough to be our parents. Music was just good back then.
Marilyn McCoo - has one of the best voices of all time....she doesn't seem to get the recognition she deserves. Maggie - you did a great job of showing what a great singer Marilyn is.
Many hits, including Laura Nyro's "Wedding Bell Blues", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sweet Blindness", and "Save The Country".
And “If I Could Reach You”. My favorite!
This is one of my all time favorite songs. I saw them in the early 70’s and it ranks as one of the best concerts I’ve ever heard.
Marilyn McCoo, the singer here, also does a great job on two other of their hit songs, "I Didn't To Sleep At All" (my favorite) and "Wedding Bell Blues". She had a big hit with her husband Billy Davis, who was also a part of the 5th Dimension with "You Don't Have To Be A Star". This groups biggest hits were of course "Aquarius/Let The Sun Shine In" and "Up Up And Away".
Marilyn McCoo's voice, with its four-octave range, is a national treasure and a gift from God. She's had some operatic training, and it shows. If you want to hear how truly impressive she is, listen to her version of this tune from her 2012 live CD with husband Billy Davis, Jr. Her voice hasn't aged in the slightest, and her performance is unforgettable!
On a separate note, can we talk about the kind of balls it takes to go on "Soul Train" and perform a ballad??
My friend and I played Wedding Bell Blues on our radio show a few years ago, and during the time our microphones were muted, we couldn't help but sing along!
being born in 1955 I grew up with the 30's 40's 50' 60' 70' music, we were blessed with wonderful sounds
Me too! We had such great music.
Beautiful song. Marilyn McCoo was so good. Great reaction, Maggie.
Thank you!! ❤️🐧❤️
We loved her and them so much. Their first hit was Up Up and Away, which I still love,
I was so fortunate to be exposed as a kid to such a variety of music when I was a child in the 60's and 70's and i just soaked it up. I remember hearing this after Age Of Aquarius and really liking it.
Marylin was one of the great natural talent singers of the era, shes there with Karen Carpenter, Linda Ronstadt, Barbara Streisand.
Just beautiful vocals.
This song just warms my heart. Love Marilyn’s angelic voice and the 5th Dimension group backing her. I’m almost 70 years old and I remember this song fondly along with many other of the group’s hits . And her voice is real and natural without many of the current technological voice additives. ❤
Thought I had to mention this song is Burt Bacharach, lyrics by Hal David.
Back in the '70s, you couldn't swing a cat without hitting one of the countless stars who found fame covering the Bacharach portfolio.
Dionne Warwick, Marilyn McCoo here, Karen Carpenter, must have been Barbra Streisand or Aretha Franklin, Herb Alpert... this era boggles the mind! 😄😉
A beautiful woman with an extraordinary voice.
Nothing beats pure talent. Great take on the voice style.
I crushed on Marilyn (for decades!), what a gorgeous woman and lovely singer. For those lucky few who saw the shows, the Fifth Dimension opened for the Carpenters at several venues in what would have been an incredible evening. Marilyn McCoo and Karen Carpenter, back-to-back. Nirvana.
This is a Beautiful Song. I was 6 when i saw this on tv. Just Beautiful 😢
I've been listening to this song since 1970 and it never gets old to me it's one of my top five favorite songs😊
At 4:14 when you were talking of Marilyn's belt, the sound she creates is such an 'imploring' sound... urging and yearning at the same time... so good. Great job in pointing it out to me a non musician, you did a great explaining too, thank you.
I first heard this song when my parents brought this album when I was about 5. I'm so glad to have grown up when The 5th Dimension and the Carpenters were at their peak.
An unrelated comment:
This song was on the Portrait album. Near the end of the video, a image of the album was shown. This artwork, as well as that within the folded sleeve, was done by artist Leroy Neiman. He primarily painted athletes in the similar color-filled style and was very popular at his time.
Had the privilege of seeing the Fifth Dimension on the Lawn of the University of Virginia, May 1967. It was absolutely magical. Thanks for reacting to this
Marvelous Marilyn McCoo stole my heart back in the early 70s. She could sing the phone book and I would never be tired of it. Ironically, although this song was about divorce she and fellow 5th Dimension singer, Billy Davis Jr. got married in 69 and are married still. In 2006 they released an album called Blackbird. Great choice.
classic song -grew up with them-Age of Aquarius is another classic
Marylyn has been married to Billy Davis Jr. since 1969. They had an act of their own and a variety show. Very talented couple.
Maggie, you should occasionally do duets with the singers on your reactions. They sound soooo good.
As young men we were in love with Marilyn McCoo
I’m soooo glad that you are back. Missed you.
She still sings this song in her act, today. Just a very talented and classy lady. Marylin McCoo. How about the song? Another Burt Bacharach/Hal David composition.
Just got here and loving this. Thanks Roy for sponsering my trip to Memoryland.
Kudos to Burt and Hal for this song. Paired with A House is not a home, and you have transcendant music.
Next up should be: Last Night(I didn't get to sleep at all),Marilyn is a treasure
One of my favorite songs. She is so smooth and loving in her voice.
Maggie I think you would really appreciate their recording of “Love’s Lines, Angles and Rhymes”. It has such an incredible vocal to very unusual lyrics and arrangement. And backed with luscious instrumentation.
Love this group! They were so awesome and their songs were so beautiful!
Always loved this song from the day it hit the airwaves back then.
They were fabulous. A great group and Marilyn was the heart. Check out some of the others. Aquarius is a true classic.
Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote some great songs for some great groups like this...classic.
This song was first performed on the TV show, "It Takes A Thief," starring Robert Wagner and Fred Astaire.
Hi Maggie! My name is Stepan, I'm from Russia. I admit, your assessment, the process of watching and commenting on the video and the real energy emanating from you amazes me. I especially liked your reaction to the band Bon Jovi. I started listening to rock with the band Bon Jovi. Your reaction amazed me and drew my attention to many things that I had not noticed. Thank you for such a comprehensive review. I will be glad if you appreciate another Bon Jovi video - born to be my baby. This video combines perfectly, just like me. Composition, text and another behind-the-scenes view. And all this is imbued with the crazy energy of all participants. I will be extremely glad if you respond.

I would love to hear you cover this one Maggie,, I think that it totally suits you & it would be beautiful. ❤
Another great song from David and Bacharach
Marilyn McCoo is genetic perfection. I've had a crush on her since I was a kid.
That's the music we grew up with, and think hundreds of groups performing to this level, new groups and hits almost every few weeks. It was such a good time.
I find it hard to believe that you haven't heard this. I grew up with 'The 5th Dimension'. (but I'm old)
Natural gift--providence taught her...
Marilyn McCoo - all that talent, style and a total babe too!
Marilyn McCoo is one of the greatest singers of the 60s and 70s. She could do it all.
Marilyn McCoo pulls at my heartstrings every time I hear this song. I too sang semi-professionally in light opera (G & S). I understand the technical perfection of Ms. McCoo's delivery. I love her to death!!!!
Why is it that songs like this give me goosebumps all over when I listen to them? Diana Ross singing Love Child does the same thing. Answer; because they're so damn good.
Loved this group so much !!
They had the best music during the 1970s! I had vinyl LP recordings of this group. Still fantastic! I am a baby-boomer. 🙏💖🌹
Fabulous video! Terrific reaction and analysis!
Thank you!! ❤️🐕❤️
I was going to suggest this, but I just found this vid. Awesome!
Great choice, Maggie! I’m just arrived. ✌️ Great reaction, too!
Another great song from Burt Bacharach/Hal David.
Holy Bacharach, Batman... what a great song. I think this could be Hal David's best set of lyrics.
Gotta listen to Stoned Soul Picnic, I Didn't Get to Sleep at All, and Wedding Bell Blues of hers and 5th Dimension!
Great choice Roy, and superb analysis Maggie - you really nailed this one!
If you ever get a chance to see Marylin McCoo backed by a full harmonic orchestra, do it. I've seen it in Dayton and to borrow a term from Maggie it is B-E-A-Utiful
“ somebody hurt you” by a girl called eddy will amaze. Her phrasing , style. Song is reminiscent of this one.
She is the prototype for Whitney Houston’s vocal style. Enough said.
Maggie and commenters, I think you'll find that The 5th Dimensions best song may be "If I Could Reach You." Billy Davis Jr. and Marilyn McCoo also do a great
duet together titled "You Don't Have To Be A Star." Enjoy!
Hi Maggie, another song that shows Marilyn Mccoo's vocal prowess and technique is Last Night, I Didn't Get To Sleep At All.
Music students from a CA college, the other young lady was on the track team....
The jaw drop was sensational when Marilyn started singing.
I loved this reaction and would like your reaction to someone called the Captain and Tenille. the captain plays keyboards occasionally Tenille does as well, but she is the vocalist, and I would like you to react to the song "The way that I wanna touch you" it was a #4 song. I personally think it was one of their best.
Just perfection from Beginning to End. Marilyn McCoo can carry those notes. Beautiful Song. You should see Linda Ronstadt she had an Album Canciones de Mi Padre. Her voice is Perfection. It is a collection of old Mexican Songs. The live version is Awesome!
Such a clever and entertaining song. And perfect execution.
Yep. I used to have such a crush on Marilyn back in the day.😄
So thrilled to have seen her on Broadway in Showboat.
When I was a little boy I used to have the biggest crush on her
More Marilyn (and the Fifth Dim): "Last Night I Didn't Get to Sleep", "Love's Lines, Angles and Rhymes", "Stone Soul Picnic", "Working on a Groovy Thing", and of course the groups mega hit, "Aquarius/ Let The Sun Shine"
Well Miss Maggie I have heard so much of this group. One reason I had a major crush on Marilyn McCoo. I imagine many young men also did . 5th Dimension had many hits. Marilyn also cohosted a rock show with famous DJ Wolfman Jack Every Friday night at midnight hours of live music would be shown . Show was The Midnight Special All the great bands and solo singers wanted to be on that stage. Marilyn sang many solos and I had to say be still my heart LOL You should look deep into The 5th DiM. for your show and since you have a like voice you could do a cover song on your show
Such a beautiful song!
She could make you cry singing the alphabet.....
By the way...Check out Soul Train with Don Cornelius. The groups of color were all there at some point.
Marilyn McCoo has one of the best voices out there. Enough said
Great review
Every one loved Marilyn, and we still do.
Have you heard Judith Durham of the Seekers?
To me; another great voice.
I had never heard of her..guess she wasn't all that big in Europe.
@@reddragonready
The Seeker; from Australia; active from early to mid 60’s. Type in the song
“I’ll never find another You.”
@@nedworcester4395 Cheers! I have no problem finding a singer or band on youtube. I am just saying that in my 62 years I had never heard of McCoo before. Which isn't saying anything about her abilities but just that she wasn't known in Europe
Ooooo Marilyn has the most amazing voice and tone! Been listening all my life!
My favorites as a child were always this one and Wedding Bell Blues.
😍
