This episode has a lot of great lines (e.g. ...my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle...), but it also has two of my favorite silent takes in the entire show: Mal's look when Saffron offers to wash his feet, and Inara's look when Mal says "I knew you let her kiss you."
Each episode gets better than the last one, Emme, and now you probably beginning to understand why all the fans were so upset when the franchise was carelessly canceled after only one season.
I used this clip as a comedic relief reference, when describing how the romantic kiss developed through incestuous behavior in Roman aristocracy from mother-child feeding behavior.
Well, it was an episode of Malcom trying really hard to do the right thing and not jump the bones of the beautiful and dangerous woman... and ultimately letting her kiss him, and failing. Yet his crew had his back, so they prevailed.
I like how we saw Saffron's M.O. play out with the crew: Plan A - seduction: which takes out Mal. Plan B - (if Plan A doesn't work) roundhouse kick: which takes out Wash. Then we see her try Plan A on Inara which fails, then she immediately goes to Plan B, which Inara is also able to avoid. (demonstrating that they're evenly matched - Inara is only taken out by her affection for Mal) The fact that we see Saffron go through her progression is fun storytelling as we become familiar with her M.O.
The beginning of this episode is one of my favorite parts of the series. I really like the interaction between Mal and Jayne, and especially all of the jokes at Mal’s expense. There’s another part of a later episode that I like more, but this one is up there.
The scam is so great. We "all fall for" her naive innocent act... even when it starts to be "not so innocent" in Mal's room. It does make a great story though.
For me, the three funniest lines of the series come from this one "I swear by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you" "I knew you let her kiss you." "That's why I never kiss 'em on the mouth" :) Usually you are pretty good about getting one or two steps ahead of the plot in your reactions, but this one you were just trying to keep up. lol :)
Everyone always debates about, Why would Vera need air? It does seem to me that all throughout the series, every time someone cocks a gun i hear a sound like something either charging or maybe compressing. This is 500 years in the future. Could there be a need for guns aboard ships to be different than they are now?
When you are done with the series & the movie Serenity, you can check out numerous graphic novels & the book series. You get background on the characters & what happens later in the timeline. (They pretty well sketch out what future seasons would have been had it not been canceled)
"Our Mrs. Reynolds": The crew takes out a local gang of outlaws, and gets very drunk. Jayne gets a Rain Stick, but Mal gets a wife!? "Saffron" is eager to please, but Shepherd Book warns Mal about a Special Hell. Jayne suggests a trade. "Mal's wife" tries to woo Wash and Inara, then takes the other shuttle after sabotaging "Serenity." A scrapping web awaits the ship, but Jayne and Vera "make music" in Space. Mal catches up with "Saffron" but learns nothing important.
There are two kinds of people in the world. Those that are fooled by Saffron. And those who are not. (thankfully, I knew the story had to have a twist!)

@@brucefale6132 Joan Harris - Christina played her in Mad Men It is a snarky way to address the character we know isn't named Saffron nor do we know the Character's real name without being spoilery
How is Mal dumb? Inara has rarely ever said anything pleasant to him and that goes doubly for him saying anything pleasant to her. Why would he ever think she kissed him?
There is a theory that the reason Mal is more talkative to Saffron after he eats her food is because she has drugged it with something to make him more compliant. This would have also hit Wash.
I think Inara was playing Saffron, just trying to find out what her game was. The alarm simply cut it short. "We've lied enough." Inara very much knew what she was doing.
I vote that Inara knew Saffron wasn't on the level. But Inara also knew Saffron was well matched in strength and skill. She was fishing for details and waiting for an opportunity. The alarm interrupted and brought a sense of urgency.
It’s not a spoiler to say the show is set in roughly the 25th century. Apparently civilian gun technology has not progressed much past the 21st century. (I I suspect that is in part due to a political agenda of Joss Whedon.)
It's not politics or budget. It's to maintain the balance of the two genres in "space western." If everyone was toting hand-held laser canons, that would skew the show decidedly toward science fiction, losing much of the western flavor.
1. Totally get it regarding projectile versus directed energy weapons and FX cost. The 1980s “V” had the same issue. 2. I agree on the “Western” motif, intent, but with two key caveats: A. In universe, the authorities and very rich people did have directed energy weapons (spoiler information omitted). B. MORE TO MY PRIME POINT: The plethora of manual action and explicitly “Western” arms, compared to self loading arms. That is, a lot of revolvers and lever actions, and relatively few 1911s and ARs or AKs. Part of that goes to building the “western” picture, but not necessarily all. It brings to mind the 2018 “Halloween” movie. Actress Jamie Lee Curtis is said to have insisted for political reasons on using only manual action arms- that is, non-“assault weapons”). The truth is, the modern ammunition round is an extremely efficient storage and delivery system of kinetic power. That people 400 years from now will still be using them -cf Starship Troopers - is far from outlandish. And, of course, it contributes to the lovability of the Firefly franchise. (Lol I myself literally have more firepower in my gun locker than Jayne has in total.) That said, I retain my suspicions about Joss Whedon’s full intent.
@@TommygunNG As you seem fairly into the topic, may i ask what indicates to you that the reasons for featuring almost solely manual action type arms are Whedons political views? As for the second one, i respect your choice of staying sceptic, but is this choice based on anything or is it just, well, your personal choice?
lesson learned from this episode and midsommar: don't trust flower crowns
Don't get drunk and accept a bowl drink from a woman wearing a flower crown in a society you don't understand.

I have a patch on my rifle bag, that says, "It is my very favorite gun, I call it Vera".

Why not Bubba?
And pistols are Winona, Lulu and Pip
(Too much scifi for me)
People who talk in theaters are monsters, deserving a place in the "special" hell. Someone needs to update Dante's Inferno.🔥🔥🔥
"Somebody tries to kill you, you try to kill him right back." Good life advise.
" Well my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle."
Mal is still cursing himself for not making that trade. He could have ended up with that Callahan fullbore autolock.
I'm still waiting for the perfect real-life oportunity to say "I swear by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you" 😅

There's lots more opportunities to use lines like "My time of taking you seriously has definitely come to a middle," or "...the _special_ hell." :D

For me "that's why i never kiss them on the mouth" is the funniest and the best delivered line from Firefly. It just perfect.
I used this clip as a comedic relief reference, when describing how the romantic kiss developed through incestuous behavior in Roman aristocracy from mother-child feeding behavior.
It just comes outa nowhere, but it feels truer to the character of Jayne than anything he's ever said. lmao
It's a great line. But not the best Firefly has to offer. Some great ones are yet to come.
I think I can give my favourite without spoiling anything. "I'll be in my bunk!"

Christina Hendricks looks very... healthy in this. She awakened some things for me when I saw this the first time.

Don't get arrested? Nah. I aim to misbehave.
This episode is very...Special.
Indeed!
One of my favorite bits was the stunned incredulous look on Inara's face when Mal said "I knew you kissed her." 😆
This is a very special episode
Twenty years on, and I'm still waiting for an opportunity to swear by my pretty floral bonnet to end somebody.

And we can assume Vera's maiden name is Checkov, lol.
I wish someone made a video on Vera, Winona, as well as Bubba, Lulu and Pip
