It seems as if this video was a bit controversial😅, and it was not meant to be. The reason why I brought pro anglers onto my video, was to prove a point about EFFICIENCY. You’re going to have a more efficient time frog fishing with a baitcaster over a spinning rod, and that’s just a fact. Otherwise, why the heck would the pro anglers all be doing the same thing?? It’s their job to fish in the most efficient way possible, or else they are handicapping themselves. If you get to the end of the video, analyze all of the points that I made, and still want to throw it on a spinning rod, that’s your choice. It’s an inefficient choice, but it’s yours to make
I love your focus on efficiency, and that's why I enjoy your videos so much. I fish Rayburn all the time, so we pretty much fish the same way. All your videos make me a better fisherman.
Controversy, while not necessarily desired, means your hitting on good topics and reaching a broad range of people. Keep up doing what seems fun, educational and relevant!! (Jesus is controversial to-as you know!)
Key focus here is efficiency. It is easier to be done with a bait caster. But the argument could be made that some people like the challenge and like the fight. I talked to this one guy I met while fishing that was using a 6’ light spinning combo to catch largies, bowfin, and catfish. If you are fishing as a hobby sometimes it’s not as fun to just easily yank a fish out of the water into your boat like it’s nothing. Giving yourself a handicap can make those fights much more fun and entertaining and rewarding when you get it in the boat. Obviously tournament fishing you’d want to use the most advantageous setup
I think if you a once in awhile fisherman, then you can throw any lure you want on any rod. Youll have to work a little harder and You'll still catch fish. But if you want better efficiency, and better action out of the lures, then yes. Only using certain lures on certain rods makes much more sense. I used to throw a frog on my spinning rod because its all i had. But when i invested in the baitcaster, i have found its much easier to get the action you want from the frog.
As a angler on a small budget I found I spent less money after just buying the best rod and reel for the lure. U don't break off gear or rods at least as much. Great video!
I used to do stuff like this, just throw whatever lure with whatever rod n reel when i was younger but now that I’ve learned a lot from people like TRF i got a couple different rods lol
Good info. As of now, I only own a medium and a medium heavy spinning rod. Lots of people say "X is better to throw with this kind of rod", but you're one of the few that give any good explanations. I've done my homework though and tried to stick to the lures and styles of fishing that work for spinning rods. Like Clint Eastwood said "a man's gotta know his limitations."
yeah, point taken, and im not going to argue any of the points made, but heres my take: im NOT a professional angler. id love to be able to have 20 rods to pick from whenever i go out, but thats not in the cards. a spinning reel CAN throw top water frogs, as inefficiently as it may be, but a casting rod CANT throw most small finesse baits.
Not to mention the accuracy of cast, especially with something like a frog, is MUCH better with a casting rod. Even the best fisherman can’t find the holes in the pads, etc as good with spinning gear. Sometimes that thing just springs forward!
Calling fellow anglers dumb or silly based on what equipment the use is not the way to promote yourself on your corporate guided, you tube rating oriented tactics. Efficiency is also found on someone who can fish anywhere using anything. There are plenty of pro anglers out there fishing not for money or looking for sponsors but for the love and joy of fishing. Preference and skill are not the same in everybody and you have a lot to learn if do not respect that.
I totally respect that. But I’m telling you one thing, every pro angler might not be looking for money, but every single one of them wants to win. I spend weeks around them every year, and I can confirm that without a doubt. They do everything in their power to win and efficiency is a part of that. If you want to catch more fish, like pro anglers, then you have to focus on efficiency. If you don’t and you just want to enjoy the level you’re at, go you that’s totally cool. This channel is about efficiency, and I’m not gonna change that
You said medium-heavy and heavy spinning rods are not common in the bass fishing world? That is wrong. I have used medium-heavy spinning rods for the last 30 years. A 6-foot medium-heavy Diawa I bought back in 88 was the best texas-rig worm rod I ever owned(alas I broke off the tip many years ago). I have at least five MH spinning rods right now. I do agree that a spinning rod is not ideal for frog fishing. Not impossible but not ideal. But there are a lot of long MH action fast tip spinning rods and there has been for a really long time. There are people that use nothing but spinning rods that catch a lot of bass every year.
You say that but only mention YOU using it. You’re not wrong saying MH is common but sorry your argumentative skills are bad lol. Also, it isn’t impossible to use a frog on a Spinning but logically, why use that when the baitcaster (and professional approval) exist?
@@mo_jamma9091What are you talking about? Do you want him to list names? You just said yourself that it’s not uncommon, and that’s the only point he was making.
Lol dude a lot of it is personal preference. Main reason for frog fish come off is no trailer hook. Last 3 tournaments as a non-boater I've out-fished the boat owner using nothing but spinning gear. They stopped making fun of it after an hour or so.
Alright I’m going fishing in like 3 hours. I’ve never thrown a frog on a spinning reel, but I’m gonna give it a shot. I have a medium heavy spinning rod and I will try to put heavy 45lb braid on one of them and the other 20lb. See if any of those work. I’ll be fishing it in mostly matted up grass “cheese” stuff. I’ll let you know what happens. I’ll also go through the same area with a normal bait caster and see what happens.
It can work. It will be a lot less comfortable and it will be a lot harder to winch them out of cover. Working the bait and making many accurate casts in a short amount of time will be difficult
Alright I just got back. Umm… so I had my reel with 45 lb braid, but I guess I needed a bigger spool, which isn’t a bad thing. But I did get three bites and landed none of them. Which happens right? But I just had a hard time making good casts under over hanging trees successfully. But I’m not too comfortable with spinning gear, just in general. But I lost all fish getting stuck in the matted grass. I couldn’t reel fast enough to get that fish out quick. All the fish just buried me. And the last fish broke my rod… also not landed. So I fished with my baitcaster but didn’t get any bites. Now I miss frog fish with my baitcaster , but I can say it is a lot easier pulling fish out with a faster reel. So would I use a spinning set up to frog fish, probably not. Just wasn’t comfortable with it. And I do think that it is very important in bass fishing to make sure that the bait you are using is matching your reel and rod. Like I could get away fishing a crank bait with my medium heavy fast action rod, but I do much better and feels more comfortable with a moderate action rod. I know fish can be extensive, complicated, and expensive. Again you can use whatever you want. But it’s just easier and less worry with the the right gear to the particular lure. Kinda like golf. You can play an entire 18 hole course with a 7 iron (tin cup movie) but it might be easier with having a whole set of clubs. actually when I first started playing golf as a kid I only used an 8 iron and a putter. But as I learned how to swing I can now feel comfortable with striking the ball with the entire set.
Fully agree. But we learnt the hard way. Lost plenty of fish using a spinning rod. Used to have 0 bait casters. We now have 6 bait casters and 3 spinning reels on our boat. Awesome videos!
You should when your clients only use spinning reels.😊 I recommend the 7' medium heavy LEWS Custom Pro spinning rod, a Custom Pro 4000 reel, 30 lb. braid, and a Strike King Pad Perch for people who only use spinning combos. I personally use baitcasters, but I have practiced many of days with a spinning combo to help clients land more frog fish on a spinning combo. I understand your argument and agree with wanting to be more efficient.👍
Yeah. One of my earlier rod purchases when getting back to fishing was a beefier 7'0, MH/F ,3/8-1oz. 8-14lb line rating I paired with a 4000 Spinning Mach 2 Lew reel. It been collecting dust( use medium for my finesse and MH rod baitcaster for paddle tails and spinner baits. But I had a what if moment lol. Think I'll try frogging with it this summer(never have before) and take a challenge lol thank for confirming it.
I’m a spinning rod guy, but I agree about throwing heavier lures on a baitcaster. I wouldn’t even try a frog on a spinning rod as it doesn’t make any sense
I've only fished a spinning rod, since I was a kid. Picked up a baitcaster for the first time this year. It was a bit of a process learning how to use it.... but it is now my favorite rod, and I finally started landing frog fish!
the BFS rod/reel combos you can get now are specifically designed for finesse fishing on a baitcaster now. problem is it japanese gear and cant find the rod or reel from any shop in the US. and theyre expensive
This is the problem with pros and sponsored anglers... There is no answer but their answer, why? Because they are salesmen and anglers. SOME people just don't want to use baitcasters, that's just a fact. Acting like there aren't heavier action spinning rods and reels is a bit silly, anyone can walk into a Walmart and find them... along with the CATFISH SPINNING RODS/REELS. I've loved every other video you made here, it's nice that Strike King gives you access to the pros... but this vid was a bit silly.
Their answer is not because they are sponsored. Their answer is because they have to do their job to catch the most and biggest fish possible. Absolutely nothing to do with sponsor obligations here. If you wanna be most efficient, throw a frog on a baitcaster. That’s not debatable
@@TylersReelFishing You or whoever was on this page when this video dropped literally told people to unsubscribe... that's not the humble Tyler we've been following for years. Is throwing a frog on spinning gear inefficient? Yup. It's it WRONG? Nope... some people fish with nothing but spinning gear, especially in kayak tournaments. As I said elsewhere, you are a good teacher, a humble Christian with a gift of really explaining the ins and outs, a modern Bill Dance on TH-cam.
I'm extremely new to fishing and I've been learning by watching your videos. Thank you for great educational instructions, but all these different rod and reel setups for different bait's had me rethinking my upgrade to a spinning reel and rod. Maybe I need to get a bait casting reel.
Fun video Tyler. Although I primarily prefer a baitcaster, I didn’t know it wasn’t a good fit for the Ned rig. Love learning from you. Keep it up young man, you’re one of the very best fishing channels I’ve found. Appreciate you.
To expound on your point about the spinning reel being below the rod and casting being above, I would also think that on the spinning rod you're fighting with the rod guides with the rod itself as support, on the casting rod you're fighting with the rod with the guides as supports.
Ok I agree with you, but there are times to through finesse presentation into heavy cover using a spinning combo. Just stepping up the line size can often be the ticket.
Tldr: Bait caster= 1,000 pound winch Spinning reel= pulling a rope with your hand Just got my first bait caster very recently and love it so much more for anything other than finesse stuff. (Still love my spinning rod tho)
I feel attacked haha. Ok just ordered a Lew’s baitcaster. Been fishing with only a spinning reel. Guess I learned today. I will admit that fishing a frog on a spinner felt weird so I guess I know why now.
Much more option in the UK for spinning rods as they are the predominant option used by the majority of anglers, much heavier rods, particularlythose aimed at use in large pike fishing. Absolutely capable for topwater. But it's understandable not to be the case in the US where those options aren't commonly available.
I think a baitcaster is a bit more efficient, you can fish faster with it. However I use a MH inshore rod which are pretty common and they are very similar to mh power of the baitcaster. Thrn use a 4000 size lightweight spinning reel which can actually take up alot of line even at 6:2:1 gear. Like 40" per crank. So you can definately fish a frog no problem setting the hooks with braid and bring them up fast. But a baitcaster is still faster. For fun fishing spinning rod is no problem. I think many people just dont understand theres alot of choices for a spinning setup to replace baitcaster if we are comparing power. It might not be as lightweight and fast combo but can get the job done
@@TylersReelFishing I'm not saying either way is wrong because they both work. Just different approaches to fishing that can still pull up some fish. And I understand everyone's channel will have different ways they like to fish and yours I can see it focuses on leading industry standards from north american pros. Which is great because what you show is a proven standard by pros who need to fish fast.
If we compared just power of pulling fish. I think both a heavy baitcasting setup as well as an inshore spinning setup both have plenty of power to pull fish out of weeds. The negative to the inshore setup is that the rod and reel together usually weight a good amount even on the lighter expensive gear. There for it can fatigue you all day long, this is why baitcaster is easier and faster to cast back into the water. Resulting in more cast and chances to get more fish.
spinnning rods in deep sea and saltwater applications are more prominent because theyll take less damage to the saltwater, are easier to clean have less moving parts are more versatile when it comes to fishing styles there and you can target almost every fish with a spinning reel, they generally take 3or 4 screws to get into the gearings of them and spray some wd40 or pb blaster in it and then slap some vaseline in there and up in the inside the part the spool sits on top of. can be done in a few minutes vs a baitcaster requiring more work small pieces and precision, not to mention the uproar of chip baitcasting reels has been insane and they would be ruined quite quickly
why do people hold the two different rods in different hands? Bait caster with left hand, but spinning rod with the right hand (or vice versa)? Just curious.
Sorry, kind of hard to phrase this question properly. I'll use you as an example, you hold your bait caster in your left hand and turn the handle with your right hand. But you hold the spinning rod in your right hand and turn the handle with your left. (I also notice just about everyone else holding them each in opposite hands and Im wondering if there is a certain reason or just personal preference.) I recently bought my first spinning rod and reel set up so trying to get it figured before spring. Thanks.
Z-man has a finesse soft plastic frogs that is meant to be rigged on a 2/0 ewg hook weightless. It's to light to throw unless you have a good bfs reel so I threw it on a spinning rod and I was successful with it. Not the biggest fish but it was efficient.
Great stuff, as usual! I've watch all of your how to videos as I got back into fishing this year. Is it possible to make a video showing the lures in the cover? I'm struggling understanding what the different lures are supposed to do. I.e. is the frog supposed to come across the pads? Is the punch rig come up over each one?
Whenever you have a fishing question or technique you want to learn, search “TylersReelFishing ____” and in that blank, but the topic you are curious about. Odds are, ive already made a video about it👍🏼
Looking back at this…spinning reels usually are higher drag rated….i think a heavy spinning rod could do the same….would be fun to try wit a 4000 series and a 7ft mh or heavy inshore rod….
I have a bait caster with 100 lbs fishing line, I use it for musky but is 100lbs too much to use for top water bass fishing? I really want to use it but I think it’s way too much. Super informative videos! Thanks so much! Hopefully they work in Canadian waters!
I definitely need some better arguments why a baitcaster is more efficient. I can get a heavy action spinning rod with a 4000 or 5000 series reel with 40 lb test. Also rod angle and muscles used are both the same. The only thing a baitcaster has over a spinning reel is gear ratio.
Kayak anglers fish for snakeheads with hollow belly frogs all the time with SPINNING RODS. Saltwater fishermen use frogs on spinning rods of course it's on open water. Using a spinning rod with a frog in heavy cover yes it's impossible but frogs are not only supposed to be heavy cover. Many pros use it in many other other situations that is not in grass such as open water where a spinning rod is possible. You can use a 7ft medium heavy with 30ib braid on a frog under docks a hanging trees Brian Latimer and other pros proved that point. Correction. Saltwater inshore anglers actually use 7ft medium spinning rods on 10ib braid but with a heavy mono leader. I personally like using a ugly gx2 spinning rod or a Lew's medium heavy spinning rod with 30ib braid and. It's not as bad as you mentioned. It's great in ponds when needing them long casts. Who locks the drag down on a spinning reel??? Set the drag properly on a spinning reel and have good braid and it's possible. Using a lower speed baitcaster on frogs sometimes is helpful because of the torque. Honestly Tyler. You are over exaggerating your point on this topic. A great angler is very versatile in what he uses. Someone with right mind knows when to use a baitcaster and when to use a spinning rod. Stop making people feel bad that use spinning set ups. Sometimes it's just more fun using spinning setups on some techniques because baitcasters can make it seem too easy. It's recorded someone caught a swordfish I believe it's 400ibs on 2ib line at saltwater. World record. We need to stop confusing people about the sport and just let bass fishing be fun. The old timers at bass pro shop they fish at Caddo lake and he says he frog fish with a 7'2" medium heavy bps Johny Morris rod with 14ib bps monofilament. Didn't believe him but was shown that he actually does that. And never had problems doing it. The old-timers actually know how to fish you can learn a lot from them. For anyone reading this just quick tip. You can use braid to a mono leader for your setups instead of flourocarbon and still catch as much bass a the person with the most expensive flourocarbon. For flourocarbon I always use berkley vanish or pline cx copoly and caught many and decent size bass. DONT ALWAYS FOLLOW THE HYPE
@TylersReelFishing I understand it's an efficient way but what about companies that make smaller hollow body walking and popping frogs, for example the Googans released recently. Many other companies have lighter hollow frogs for the specific use on spinning combos. But I know it doesn't pertain to you because it's not strike king. But what if strike king released smaller hollow body frogs or a smaller popping perch that is not meant to be used on a baitcaster. That's where a spinning rod is necessary. Realistic Fishing TH-cam channel actually has shown fishing a frog on a spinning combo and 20ib braid and I've seen he catches quite a bit bass on it. I just don't like the attitude you had on this video being jumpy off the walls reminding me of a Karen. It's something you been doing a lot lately and it's getting annoying. You were more laid back and actually chill in your videos when explaining stuff
I’ve caught plenty of bass on spinning rods with frogs. Mostly because I don’t have a bait caster. I suck at fishing too, so maybe I’m kinda like an expert fisher dude now.
Back when I was younger before I efficient with baitcaster I would use a spinning rod for frog. But not full size frogs. I would use a 7’0” medium heavy fact action spinning rod with 30lb braid. Now I use to fish a lake with sparse vegetation and A LOT of docks. I would use this spinning rod to skip the small hollow belly frog up underneath dock. And became very efficient at it. More efficient than using a bait caster for me at the time. I used smaller frogs because I found out quickly the full size frogs was a tad to big. But a small hollow belly worked awesome on my setup. I was actually so efficient at it I actually won a tournament and placed very high in others on this lake doing it. Now having said that I do use bait caster now and way better with them. But to say never use a spinning with a frog because it’s not that efficient is not true especially for some that’s not efficient with a bait caster. If done right it can be done and done well. Now your not going to throw a full sized frog on a spinning rod you’d use for drop shotting that just wouldn’t work well at all but a bigger spinning rod with a smaller frog can be done very well
So as a beginner don't even bother with a top frog or a baitcaster? You have the information to back it up just wondering. Tha k you for all you do Tyler!
Listen, this is nothing but pure fact. When I started fishing last year, I took my spinning rod to a lake, tied on a live target frog (VERY soft frog) and got hit a solid 25 times without even knowing how to walk it. I caught exactly 0 fish. I had no idea what was going on. I had no idea why I couldn't hook these fish. It was that EXACT day that I went home and googled my issue leading me to a few videos about frog fishing and the gear to use. Within a month I had a few bait casters. Within a few months, I had spent a few hundred hours studying bass fishing. This year, (year two in this sport) I'm fishing the tournament scene here, and leading for co-angler of the year. I have spent thousands of hours studying this sport through channels like this, and by staying open minded and listening to the content I have become a freaking WEAPON on the water. I've caught fish in tournaments throwing techniques I had only ever watched/studied - Having the recommended gear pre purchased knowing the situation would eventually present itself - And have won those tournaments using techniques for a first time. Don't be stubborn. Don't be arrogant. If you want to grow in this sport, and really make a difference in your skill-set. Listen, absorb, and then listen some more. I promise you if you invest the time and money you can go from zero to whatever level of hero you want, within a year and a half. Shout out to folks like Tyler (Great name, bro) that make it so much easier for new anglers to find their way and catch up to the guys and gals that have been doing this for a lifetime. God bless, and tight lines!!
Dang, what if all I have is a spinning rod? Sure, we would all love to have the perfect combo for all of our favorites baits, but, we all don't have the resources to spend money on those things.
i think if you like fishing... you can use and throw what you want.... its you and your fishing gears.... i like go fishing and forget about it what to do or not to do.... i just wanna enjoy fishing and im gonna use all what i got.... THE FISHING IS TO ENJOY NO TO MAKE MATH 😎😎😎😎😎😎
I'm thinking abt getting a tp1 black for swim jigs, jigs, flukes, Texas rigs and stuff like that. Should I get the 7'3 or the 7'4? I know you love that rod so you're opinion would be great. I fish rayburn all the time, so I knew we fished the same way. Love your videos bro!
The only difference between the two sizes is that the 7’4 will cast slightly farther and have a more tip. I fish most of that stuff on a 7’3 because I like the faster tip and I can horse those fish in better when fishing in the thick stuff. This is just my opinion though. Ps. Roll Tide
You are definitely correct. It is much better to use a medium heavy for frog fishing. Less breaks and it handles the reel in better. I love these kind of equipment comparison videos, great learning opportunity, Thanks!
Awesome video and funny. Does get much better than that. I used to fish anything with any Pole but Tyler and the pros are right. Learning the techniques and right poles and reels makes huge difference fo sho!!
Put fishing eyes on a pool cube and use 80 pound test line on a spinning reel. Crank the drag to the max. You do not need to fight the fish. You will have no difference.
Would love to see some more videos on shore fishing from you. Beautiful boat, but if I want to stay married, I bank fish. I would love to learn some good tips from you specifically around shore fishing tactics.
I make bank fishing videos all the time! Have you seen my 100 ponds series? Or just search “TylersReelFishing bank” or “TylersReelFishing pond” here on TH-cam!
Also if by any off chance you actually read this I don’t want you or anybody to think I mean any disrespect like I said I love the content I subscribed for a reason just some constructive criticism lol thank you for always being wholeheartedly wholesome and incredibly helpful
lol... man. my local fishing hole needs topwater all day long, the bass don't bite on things like senkos, they've seen it all before. Grabbed a couple of frogs today, felt so weird trying to work it on my spinning combo. Been looking for a reason to get a decent baitcaster, so thanks for that + schoolin me :) I love how much there is to learn about this sport, I am never bored with it
I only use a spinning rod I caught a 6lb bass on a football jig using a strike king rage craw trailer this year it was awesome 😎 I only use spinning reel rods I never use a frog I have no luck with those I have one I just don't use it
Lol ive been a saltwater fisherman for a very long time and maybe your right I would look crazy at the lake with my 11ft surf rod, but i also have 7ft rods I use on boats that are medium heavy is do like baitcasters but i wouldn't agree that its easier to pull in fish with one its just more efficient with certain techniques in my opinion
I think it is more or less what your preference is because i can buy a 7'6 medium heavy shimano for 99$ and its gunna rip them out of those pads and its not a bulky salt water set up
@@richardbossman9875 spinning rods flex more and differently than casting rods. Just basic facts. I grew up only using spinning rods and have made the switch to casting rods and only a few spinning. I can say from personal experience that a casting rod just performs better in situations like using a frog than the spinning rod. Not to say you can’t do it is America so do what you feel is best. For me a baitcaster on a casting rod just performs better and the flex is far superior. But if a spinning rod is all you got or is your preference than fish on brother.
Man I know this was 3 years ago….but after reading the comments, I’m getting the feel Tyler is kind of a dick if you’re not someone who just fawns all over him….or you’re someone with a sense of humor…I think my support is revoked
@@TylersReelFishing used those too, now granted i was using 40lb braid and a stout med heavy rod, which like you said is rare for spinning rod. just a little debate thats all, i've just never had an issue with that setup for frogs or something like football jigs, I only really have that setup for friends and my son that just cant get the hang of using baitcasters. I dont usually use it for that. i have baitcasters for that
Just started following u good stuff.... so basically u need to have many rods which the average guy who fishes can't do ...what would u recommend if u can have just 1 or 2 rods
I dont have time for baitcaster nonsense, id rather be fishing than dealing with last years christmas lights, i can do everything on my spinng rods that a baitcaster can do and i dont have to worry about birds nests

I agree, but no matter what you say, or do, there will be those that will disagree. Keep up the good content, I am a fan ...
Controversy =comments and veiws,nice job buddy,great video
Id say 95% percent of us aren't "pro" so the way i look at is, if you can throw with it and catch fish with it then keep using it.
I don't even own a baitcaster haha
Key focus here is efficiency. It is easier to be done with a bait caster. But the argument could be made that some people like the challenge and like the fight. I talked to this one guy I met while fishing that was using a 6’ light spinning combo to catch largies, bowfin, and catfish. If you are fishing as a hobby sometimes it’s not as fun to just easily yank a fish out of the water into your boat like it’s nothing. Giving yourself a handicap can make those fights much more fun and entertaining and rewarding when you get it in the boat. Obviously tournament fishing you’d want to use the most advantageous setup
You are correct here. On my channel I teach efficiency, so that’s the point of view I’m coming from
I think if you a once in awhile fisherman, then you can throw any lure you want on any rod.
I’m glad you understood the point of the video!
I used to do stuff like this, just throw whatever lure with whatever rod n reel when i was younger but now that I’ve learned a lot from people like TRF i got a couple different rods lol
Yuhhh les go
Agreed
yeah, point taken, and im not going to argue any of the points made, but heres my take:
im NOT a professional angler. id love to be able to have 20 rods to pick from whenever i go out, but thats not in the cards. a spinning reel CAN throw top water frogs, as inefficiently as it may be, but a casting rod CANT throw most small finesse baits.
I don’t disagree with anything you said
Not to mention the accuracy of cast, especially with something like a frog, is MUCH better with a casting rod.
Even the best fisherman can’t find the holes in the pads, etc as good with spinning gear. Sometimes that thing just springs forward!
Yep! Exactly

Totally agree with you.
🤣🤣🤣
I’ll also go through the same area with a normal bait caster and see what happens.
tell me how it goes homie
@Jake Park spinning rod, medium heavy fast. it was an old bass pro shops megacast spinning combo that i got about 7 years ago.
I’ve gotten them just fine with a frog on a spinning rod…
Fully agree. But we learnt the hard way. Lost plenty of fish using a spinning rod. Used to have 0 bait casters. We now have 6 bait casters and 3 spinning reels on our boat. Awesome videos!
Excellent explanation of the bait caster and spinning rod difference. Love the way you're not afraid to share your Lord where ever you go.
Great video Tyler. I for one appreciate your candor and brutal honesty!! You tell it like it is and have never steered us wrong
I've only fished a spinning rod, since I was a kid. Picked up a baitcaster for the first time this year. It was a bit of a process learning how to use it.... but it is now my favorite rod, and I finally started landing frog fish!
don’t know wat you were doing wrong i caught alot of frog fish on a spinning reel
@@brakkify I caught alot on a spincaster, just saying !
I torqued my wrist on a Chinook a few weeks ago and will never go for big fish with a spinning rod again. And didn't land the fish. Great video.
I’m extremely confident in hooksets with spinning setups, but I bet once I get a bait caster it’ll be way better
the BFS rod/reel combos you can get now are specifically designed for finesse fishing on a baitcaster now. problem is it japanese gear and cant find the rod or reel from any shop in the US. and theyre expensive
A family, a full time job…I got no time for wasting it. Efficiency is the only goal for me. Easier said then done when you can’t find em!
Every presentation has its own proper rod, buy what you can afford and have fun !
I found it very entertaining and I loved it. To each his own.
You should’ve shown how bad baitcasters are at Ned rigging
I'm extremely new to fishing and I've been learning by watching your videos. Thank you for great educational instructions, but all these different rod and reel setups for different bait's had me rethinking my upgrade to a spinning reel and rod. Maybe I need to get a bait casting reel.
Everyone needs at least one of each. It’s not even debatable
Fun video Tyler. Although I primarily prefer a baitcaster, I didn’t know it wasn’t a good fit for the Ned rig. Love learning from you. Keep it up young man, you’re one of the very best fishing channels I’ve found. Appreciate you.
Actually with a lightweight spool borderline bfs and a light rod it’s doable
You can with heavier jigs and big trds. If they're hitting a little ned on a spinning rod then switching to the bigger one could get bigger bites.
How’d it go
To expound on your point about the spinning reel being below the rod and casting being above, I would also think that on the spinning rod you're fighting with the rod guides with the rod itself as support, on the casting rod you're fighting with the rod with the guides as supports.
We need a “GOOSHHHHH” shirt 🤣 epic vid Tyler 👏
Yes I do haha
Or a "I knew it" shirt lol
Ok I agree with you, but there are times to through finesse presentation into heavy cover using a spinning combo. Just stepping up the line size can often be the ticket.
As long as I’m using braid can I use a 7 foot medium heavy rod bait caster
Tldr: Bait caster= 1,000 pound winch
Spinning reel= pulling a rope with your hand
Just got my first bait caster very recently and love it so much more for anything other than finesse stuff. (Still love my spinning rod tho)
I feel attacked haha. Ok just ordered a Lew’s baitcaster. Been fishing with only a spinning reel. Guess I learned today. I will admit that fishing a frog on a spinner felt weird so I guess I know why now.
Take your time learning how to use it. Your first bad birds nest is gonnna suck but man will it make a difference
The issue is, on my channel I really care about getting the job done. I care about doing the job well
@@TylersReelFishing I'm not saying either way is wrong because they both work.
Haha dang I miss less hook sets on a spinning combos than a bait casters
Once you learn properly though, the ceiling for success is much higher with the baitcaster
The only reason I don’t just use any rod on any lure is because of Tyler it is so important what lure you use on what rod
😶
spinnning rods in deep sea and saltwater applications are more prominent because theyll take less damage to the saltwater, are easier to clean have less moving parts are more versatile when it comes to fishing styles there and you can target almost every fish with a spinning reel, they generally take 3or 4 screws to get into the gearings of them and spray some wd40 or pb blaster in it and then slap some vaseline in there and up in the inside the part the spool sits on top of. can be done in a few minutes vs a baitcaster requiring more work small pieces and precision, not to mention the uproar of chip baitcasting reels has been insane and they would be ruined quite quickly
I used some of your suggestions today on the water. On the drop shot. Thank you so much...
why do people hold the two different rods in different hands? Bait caster with left hand, but spinning rod with the right hand (or vice versa)? Just curious.
Depends which side the handle is on. Most baitcasters have the handle on the right, most spinning reels on the left
But he is sponsored by strike king so zman products dont count
That’s not the frog I’m talking about
@@TylersReelFishing 😆😁 yea I know but it is possible but not preferred like you mentioned.
Great video Tyler! You’re exactly right brother.
Yeah you don’t need 100lb
I definitely need some better arguments why a baitcaster is more efficient. I can get a heavy action spinning rod with a 4000 or 5000 series reel with 40 lb test. Also rod angle and muscles used are both the same. The only thing a baitcaster has over a spinning reel is gear ratio.
Shimano reels. Try a stradic or sustain. You get what you pay for. The gear ratios are amazing
Gear ratios are lower but the radius of the spool is much bigger on the spinning reel so the line take up is about the same
Kayak anglers fish for snakeheads with hollow belly frogs all the time with SPINNING RODS.
You can use a 7ft medium heavy with 30ib braid on a frog under docks a hanging trees
Brian Latimer and other pros proved that point.
It ain’t hype, it’s the most efficient way to catch fish. See my pinned comment
@@TylersReelFishing LFG fishes a frog with a spinning setup in his recent video
I’ve caught plenty of bass on spinning rods with frogs. Mostly because I don’t have a bait caster. I suck at fishing too, so maybe I’m kinda like an expert fisher dude now.

This was a 🔥🔥 video, Tyler. You are so funny and those snippets with the pros weighing in was so funny!
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
im a beginner at baitcasting and what is your opinion about using it for saltwater fishing.
Great video I find myself arguing this point all the time

What spinning reel/rod are you using.
That was awesome having all those legends on your video 🤙🏻
I agree, and I loved that he got their gut reaction.
Thanks for the tips!!
Of course! Thanks for the comment!
Now your not going to throw a full sized frog on a spinning rod you’d use for drop shotting that just wouldn’t work well at all but a bigger spinning rod with a smaller frog can be done very well
Yuup
Very entertaining and extremely educational. Loved the pros comments, LOL!
So as a beginner don't even bother with a top frog or a baitcaster? You have the information to back it up just wondering. Tha k you for all you do Tyler!
Definitely bother with both! This video was just to show that you are most efficient to use a frog on a bait caster

Dang, what if all I have is a spinning rod? Sure, we would all love to have the perfect combo for all of our favorites baits, but, we all don't have the resources to spend money on those things.
Make due with what ya got. But if you got both, choose the route of efficiency
I use heavy lures on bait casters and I use smaller lighter lures on spinning reels.

Ps. Roll Tide
The 7’4” MH KVD rod would be the best in my opinion for shallow Texas swim jig fishing
You are definitely correct. It is much better to use a medium heavy for frog fishing. Less breaks and it handles the reel in better. I love these kind of equipment comparison videos, great learning opportunity, Thanks!

I think it is more or less what your preference is because i can buy a 7'6 medium heavy shimano for 99$ and its gunna rip them out of those pads and its not a bulky salt water set up
I was guessing this was about how people spool a spinning rod. 😂 100% agree, just the flex alone would kill the hook set😬
What flex? If you are talking about flex in the rod even spinning rods have medium heavy/heavy and stronger rods available.
