Very nice restoration on the Disston. Sometimes the power tools are destructive on old tools like this so hand finishing is better and also more rewarding.

Wonderful Job Magdad. I love restoring Diston saws. I have a Diston saw like the one in your video. It works great. Diston was always the best saws made and I love the fact that it was part of the H.K.Porter family of tools, since my dad worked at the H.K.Porter plant in Boston, Massachusetts where they forged their tools. Tools made there last for over 100 years! I know cause I have one a bolt cutter I restored that was made in 1909. My dad was born in 1912!

Some of my family or people I know who know how I like to restore old tools and they go out of their way to tell me about tools that they have which would be of interest to me!They either find them or they have belonged to their dad or grand father or know that my dad helped manufacture them! It gives me a warm special feeling!
Thanks R.B! I find that the older Disston saws have a deeper etching that tends to survive. I think the Evapo-Rust is good for sneaking up on markings that might get obliterated by heavy sanding.
After you applied that finish on the wood it looks incredible, and I truly like the curve of the handle. It was smart to leave the initials in the wood in place because as you said it preserves the history of the tool. I especially liked the brass hardware with that old company logo. That really shined up well. Great work as always!👍

I agree! I don't do much handsawing, but I've got a 100 year old screwdriver that I use every day and you can't beat the edge on an old carbon steel blade pocket knife!

I know it as a Keyhole saw, it is a bit larger than yours but would probably cut both keyholes and curves. Never used it, but now I really want to test it out…. Great Job.

Another great one! Like the history,always see the renderings of the factories back then,look massive,be neat to see the actual thing. Wonder about the ghosts of the past that owned the tool,also back when it got dull,you didnt throw it away,you actually sharpened and maintained them.

357magdad may be awhile before my test but this is what I was thinking....I have a bike and got some pipes chromed and in the processing before the dipping they submerge the metal in a solution that cleans it 100% with out damaging the metal so I’m going to see if I can get them to do just the metal cleaning part and see how it comes out...just trying to protect the fine etching...

Great job. I'm currently restoring an old Disston tenon saw. The handle was quite battered, and some of the wood was soft and rotted at the top where the back of the blade goes into the handle, which was quite rusted underneath. I've done a bit of reshaping on it and think I've got all the rotten wood out. It was quite an interesting one, but it's always a bit scary reshaping a 100 year old handle in case you screw it up!
According to the Disstonian Institute that blade stamp is known as the "Inchworm". It dates it back to the 1850's. I'm not sure if the saw would have had this blade originally or it was a replacement.
Henry Disston was born in Birmingham England and immigrated to America as a young man and set up his own business, which he learnt in England, when he first started his business he had to use Sheffield steel from England or nobody would buy his saw's, it wasn't until much later he started to produce his own steel but he never told his customer at first.
Sorry Magdaddy No poem today. But I do have a question To throw your way. I have an old Disston hand saw that was my dad's. It has more extensive etching on the blade. I want to retain the etching of course but my inexperience in tool restorations keeps me from cleaning it up. How deep do those etchings go and what is the least abrasive product to use on that area? Thanks for the fun. :-)
The older Disston saws seem to have deep enough etching that will survive light sanding like I did on this compass saw. If the saw is newer ("Phila" medallion) the etching is really fragile and will disappear on you. Pick a small spot and try some 800 grit wet and dry and WD-40. Go slow and see if the etching is surviving the sanding.
Your file is too large and doesn’t match the rake angle. It also oops like the saw teeth were recut set and sharpened on a machine. The saw is too straight to have been done by hand. My dad was a saw filer. He had old hand saw machines fifty years ago.
Any old tool refurbished and brought back to life is a good tool. Thumbs Up!

I think the Danish oil and the wax gives a good traditional finish. If you need water proof you would probably want to use polyurethane.

Magdad. Have you noticed that the higher carbon steel comes out of the evapo-rust much darker that mild steel?
An added benifit of Evapo_Rust is that it colors the heat treated metal darker. It will show which sections of a tool have been heat treated.

Very nice restoration but why do you use Flitz for steel then Brasso for brass? I find that Flitz is much better than Brasso on brass.
Thanks for watching! I only tried the Brasso on the medallion to get between the letters, etc. I still Flitzed it afterward.
The handle is prone to breaking across the grain I reduced this by fitting a brass rod 3 1/4 of the way in on mine!
