*If you're curious, here was my first tutorial on making a planted betta tank. Do you think I've improved in the past 3 years? 😉 **th-cam.com/video/JMQCJpD58O0/w-d-xo.html*
Great info! Embarrassing confession: I have had a beta for 2 years in a 1 gallon tank and just found out that is bad! I’m building my first community beta tank and hope to venture into live plants, too. Wish me luck!
How is it going? I have a female betta in a 10 gallon. I added 5 tetras and she killed all of them overnight. All bettas are different...I have a male living with 5 mollies and he thinks he’s one of them 🙏
@@mandypdx really well! My beta is so chill! We got a 10 gal, added live plants and tetras, then introduced him and all is well. The snails that snuck in are another story altogether though lol
I wish you great luck! Species tanks (i.e. tanks with one species of aquatic pet) are fun! I love my yellow tiger koi roundtail plakat female Thundra (named after a Marvel character), long-finned veiltail super red dwarf female Val (named after Valentine's day for her bright red coloration), half-blind super red crowntail male Captain Redbeard (you can probably guess why he has that name), and my odd wild-type, eight-finned super delta Banana! All of them live in their own 15 gallon tanks heavily-planted like a jungle! Live plants are the creme de la creme, the best-of-the-best! They absorb ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, heavy metals, and provide beautiful cover for your pet! Most aquatic creatures "require" them to stay healthy and stress-free (well, maybe not "required" but it certainly is best and preferred). Low-maintenance plants I recommend for beginners are hygrophila polysperma, egeria aka elodea/anacharis/water weed, duckweed, frogbit, dwarf water lettuce, valisneria/val, java ferns, aponogeton aka 'bulb plant', and anubias. If you want riparium/paludarium plants try chinese evergreen, pothos, philodendron, purple waffle, wandering jew, common ivy, fittonia, aluminum plant, ferns, or any plant labeled as 'tropical', 'keep soil moist', etc. How about aquaponics? You can grow tomatoes, sweet potato, basil, strawberries, and many more! The aquarium hobby is vast, fascinating, expensive, and time-consuming but as long as you get it right eventually (it doesn't even have to be the first time), you should succeed. Just remember to cycle your tank, keep a filter with biological filtration, substrate for the plant roots as well as beneficial bacterial, use a heater set at 76-82°F, feed quality foods high in protein, low in fiber, and with a large amount of insects, feed a variety of foods including frozen or live, especially daphnia which is great for digestion (avoid too much freeze-dried foods and frozen bloodworms as these cause digestive issues), and perform frequent 25% water changes once a week or every other week with plenty of live plants. Sorry for the long comment but I hope this helps! If you need more info, feel free to private message (PM) me @justafishservant on Fishlore! Good luck, my fish-loving friend ;)
Oh don't worry I had a beautiful crown tail and he was in a half gallon happily thriving I moved him up to a 3 gallon and the poor guy croaked within a week that tank was properly cycled I kept him in his old tank until it was completely cycled. I wish I would have seen this before I setup my newest tank, I also used the eco complete substrate and didn’t realize that would cause an ammonia spike and was battling that for a good while, everything is evened out and healthy now but it was not an easy beginning thats for sure! @@richie5930 I did a daily 30-50% water change and had bacteria bio orbs (not sure if those effected anything but I used 2x the amount needed) in the filter compartment and double dosed searched prime each water change. I did this before I had fish but had introduced some water column feeding plants since the start to help! The liquid that comes in the bag with the eco complete is basically liquid fertilizer, you can dump a lot of it out (but would be taking a lot of the nutrients with it) but as porous as the substrate is will still have some left behind for the roots of plants, definitely not an expert but this helped me to get it ready with such an amount of initial ammonia!

I’m new to the hobby and wanted to know how long I’m suppose to let it sit and filter for before I get my beta fish? I realized you let it sit in an already exsisting tank but I don’t have that so how long would I let it run for?in a new tank
Amazing video! I learn so much every time I come to your channel! And also I have a question, what kind of water are you putting into your aquarium is it Ro water?
Nah, it's regular tap water but I use this water jug instead of a bucket because I feel like I have more control over how fast the water spills out. :)
Curious question-the floating plants-I have some in my tank, but recently they've been blackening and then rotting away. They were thriving when I was adding the Aquarium-Co-Op easy fertilizer liquid, but I stopped as they were getting out of control at one point. I was wondering if maybe my light was too bright? But I haven't changed lights so it's weird that they were growing out of control to now rotting away. I've been using the hygger Full Spectrum Aquarium Light with Aluminum Alloy Shell Extendable Brackets, White Blue Red LEDs, External Controller, for Freshwater Fish Tank from Amazon Love your videos and always look forward to them! I hope you're having a great weekend :)
If you wanted to have a betta with some tankmates, would it be better to put the betta in first or put the other fish in first and then add the betta? Or all at the same time?
I have been using small pebbles as a substrate with the pumice stones hidden underneath. What is the advantage of using fine gravel substrate that you see you and others using?
I’m setting up my 20gallon for the second time 🤩. The first time I had some male endlers and a betta, the betta had long fins that’s were extremely damaged when I got him because he jumped into another Bettas tank. He healed a bit but after about 1year and a half developed fin rot and he got very sick when my parents were looking after him while I was away. He died about 3weeks later, even though water quality was fine 💔. I’m getting a healthy koi betta shortfin male now, scraping my tank and looking forward to getting back into fish keeping
How should I prepare my filter if I don't have a pre-established tank? Do I let it circulate water in the new tank and add something to the water to speed up the nitrogen cycle?
Omg Im watching my friends betta rn and when you said “bettas like to jump” I was like I’m so glad when I go to sleep or leave the house I close the little vent on the lid /just to make sure/
Sorry I'm so new at this, I literally know nothing! At the beginning when you talk about running the filter for a while to seed it, what does that mean? Before putting the betta fish in, I have to run the filter for a while, check temperature often and the ammonia levels first? What kind of condition should the tank be in before the betta fish can go in?
You are so smart!!! And everything your suggesting and saying makes so much sense! Thank you this really helped me! Any suggesting plants? I’ve never touched a live plant!
Just tuned in. Looking forward to the video. A friend of mine has kept some cloud minnows for a month or so and has just added a betta. I would like a community tank but feel just the one fish would be a good place to start: and I have the financial means for a great tank for a single betta. I don’t want it in a cell. So looking forward to watching and learning a little more about how to make a great tank
I have a question! My husband purchased a marineland portrait tank for my birthday, I wanted to put a betta in it. I already have all the supplies ordered and on their way... then learned that portrait tanks are not ideal for bettas. Would the particular type of betta affect its ability to thrive in this kind of tank? For instance, the more stream-lined bettas (much like the wild/natural bettas) having an easier time swimming to the surface? I have already adjusted the filter flow to low and added a heater, it is a planted tank with a pothos added for nitrate/nitrite processing. Smooth rocks to prevent fin-tearing/injury.
Hi, Is it safe to connect your aquarium straight into a power outlet or it should be connected to a surge protector designed for aquarium?, where I live there is a lot of raining and thunderstorms and I am afraid to connect it straight into the outlet Thank you
I have never had a good luck with Betta fish. No matter how much I improve they tend to get infections or diseases and pass away within 2years. That's why I am taking a step back and learning as much as possible.. probably in the next year I will create a ultimate Betta habitat!!
hello, what if i don't have any existing tanks, how long should i leave the filter running to grow beneficial bacteria? and when would you recommend to add fish? i'm having a betta tank too :)
Try guppies. Get like one male and three females, maybe some snails too. Use one air pump and sponge filter and you'll be good to start... everything else is just extras that you can get in the future.
I live in Cali and it is summertime here,. My room specifically becomes very humid cause their is no ventilation and my betta water temperature is usually 81-82 degree during the day, night 80 degree and on a cold night probably 78. Should I still use a heater even though I have the recommended temperature?
Another great device for your heater is the Kill-a-Watt EZ multi-meter ~it can tell you if your heater is on and drawing proper current + about a million other things. You can even tell how much it's costing you per month.
I just set up my tank using the Eco complete substrate, and in one of my Facebook groups they said this type of substrate would hurt corydoras, but in some of your videos that I have watch you have Cory cats, right? Are they ok with this type of substrate?
I have an old 1.5 gallon/2 gallon tank that I set up for a black orchid Betta fish named him Midnight. It's only got gravel for aquariums and some aquarium plants in it. That is it. I absolutely love it. I'm waiting for them to grow in now! It's got an aquarium light on it. I'll eventually get a heater for it and a thermometer to. This tank won't be set up any other way. I think it's perfect.
Okay, but what do you do if you don not have any other tanks or know anyone with other tanks and therefore can not seed (is that the right word?) the filter. I really love your walk thorough on the whole tank!
you can use tap water but it has to be treated and cycled before adding any fish. You can buy water treatments at any pet store it takes out all the chemicals that are in tap water that aren’t safe for fish. after adding the water treatment you should let the tank cycle for atleast a week the longer the better, also a lot of pet stores will test your water for free :)
Curious, why didn't you spray/roller paint the background? This is one of those issues that I see is not addressed very often on Aquarium Co-Op. Scotch tape will wear out quick, and even quicker with the least little bit of moisture. You could buy a can of Krylon and a roll of painter's tape for about the same, and it'd last until you scraped it off.
I could use some help! I have the 5 gallon top fin retreat tank you used in one of your videos for my betta and I feel like the filter is too strong for it I can see my betta struggling especially when I go to feed him how the food whips around the tank. I looked up tutorials on how to lower the flow and for some reason mine is fixed in comparison to the 2.5 gallon videos I have seen! I don’t know what modifications I should make to make it easier for my betta to swim so he does not get stressed! Any help would be appreciated! 😊
Nah, I'm planning on adding a bunch of cryptocorynes and want them to get as many nutrients as possible. The root tabs haven't affected my water quality so far.
Hi I am Very New to this Aquarium Hobby So I really Need Your Help So I Got a 6 Gallon Tank Recently Dimensions Are : 15.74Inches x 9.05Inches x 9.84Inches (40cmx23cmx25cm) and I also Got A Good Internal Filter and the Temperatures are also All right as I Live in India my Water Temperature is around 26-28Celcius. Love your videos and always look forward to them!
Do you recommend a planted tank for someone that knows nothing about it? I’ve bought a 5 gallon kit and it’s still empty.
I got the same tank as you. Do you need mat under the tank? 😮
The link to the Digital thermometer goes to the temperature controller. :) heats up! Love your videos!
Oops, thanks for the catch!
Plakat bettas
Hi, Is it safe to connect your aquarium straight into a power outlet or it should be connected to a surge protector designed for aquarium?, where I live there is a lot of raining and thunderstorms and I am afraid to connect it straight into the outlet
Thank you
That blue and orange one looks pretty good.
Thank you! He still bites his tail occasionally, but at least there's no fin rot.
@@GirlTalksFish Oh I didn't know fish did that, we had a cat that used to chase her own tail.
I have never had a good luck with Betta fish. No matter how much I improve they tend to get infections or diseases and pass away within 2years. That's why I am taking a step back and learning as much as possible.. probably in the next year I will create a ultimate Betta habitat!!
if i m not using planted plants what is a substrate that you recommend ..
Which 10 gallon fish tank would you recommend!
hello, what if i don't have any existing tanks, how long should i leave the filter running to grow beneficial bacteria? and when would you recommend to add fish? i'm having a betta tank too :)
Try guppies. Get like one male and three females, maybe some snails too. Use one air pump and sponge filter and you'll be good to start... everything else is just extras that you can get in the future.
How to seed a filter if there is not another tank in the house or should we just us it new?
Hi just wandering what can be done to limit the ammonia spike from eco complete substrate ? I am planning a fish tank also soon thats why..
I live in Cali and it is summertime here,. My room specifically becomes very humid cause their is no ventilation and my betta water temperature is usually 81-82 degree during the day, night 80 degree and on a cold night probably 78. Should I still use a heater even though I have the recommended temperature?
When ever I see that notification, you know ima click it straight away. Love your vids ❤️
Another great device for your heater is the Kill-a-Watt EZ multi-meter ~it can tell you if your heater is on and drawing proper current + about a million other things. You can even tell how much it's costing you per month.
QUESTION; how do you detect when snails die so they don’t foul the tank?
I’m getting a few bubbles coming from the top (black foam) area. Is that ok?
I just set up my tank using the Eco complete substrate, and in one of my Facebook groups they said this type of substrate would hurt corydoras, but in some of your videos that I have watch you have Cory cats, right? Are they ok with this type of substrate?
Do you not need co2 for plants?
my 37 gal is in front of my air vent (only place to put it) but it has a 200 watt heater, will it be ok?
I have an old 1.5 gallon/2 gallon tank that I set up for a black orchid Betta fish named him Midnight. It's only got gravel for aquariums and some aquarium plants in it. That is it. I absolutely love it. I'm waiting for them to grow in now! It's got an aquarium light on it. I'll eventually get a heater for it and a thermometer to. This tank won't be set up any other way. I think it's perfect.
they need a 5+ gallon, please do research, 1.5 gallon should just be temporary
Nice video. 😊
Betta tank setups are amazing and easy.💁🏻♀️
Love tank so much!!! Looks great yet still affordable!
Do i need a heater if
I live in desert but kinda cold country? For my beta
Do you use any fertilizers?
Eco complete is gravel. The fertilizer water is to make it nutrient rich
Hay iv just got a 13L betta fish tank but now iv been told its far too small . What would say as returning is not an option for me
How long does it take for aquarium soil dust take to settle in water when setting up new aquarium?
What do you add as an algae eater? ... I have a 3.7 gallon betta tank... I can't decide what should i add as algae eater
Okay, but what do you do if you don not have any other tanks or know anyone with other tanks and therefore can not seed (is that the right word?) the filter. I really love your walk thorough on the whole tank!
do I need to condition the water if I have filtered water all through the house.
Hi! I have a really important question: does the water matter? Can you put tap water or does it have to be filtered/ potable?
you can use tap water but it has to be treated and cycled before adding any fish. You can buy water treatments at any pet store it takes out all the chemicals that are in tap water that aren’t safe for fish. after adding the water treatment you should let the tank cycle for atleast a week the longer the better, also a lot of pet stores will test your water for free :)
Cool, but how do you make a fish tank if you don't have any aquariums nearby? I Don't have another aquarium to use for the filter.
Because the Scotch tape has never worn off for me yet. :)
hiii can you give your opinion on duckweed in beta tank???
Can I use a well planted 3 gallon for a beta?
Betta got serious concussion there😂😂
I could use some help! 😊
Great video! I’ve never used root tabs but you used way more than I usually see, worried about excess nutrients?
Nah, I'm planning on adding a bunch of cryptocorynes and want them to get as many nutrients as possible. The root tabs haven't affected my water quality so far.
Plz make a video on y hornwort is not growing
I have the exact same betta..,❤️
My betta tank is growing green algae on the stone and shells kept in the tank..
Can I get some help there?
I've seen many people say that it needs a heater, but is it necessary for a heater if you live in a tropical island nation like Philippines?
Also is it okay to use naturally filtered fresh water that comes from underground?

Thank you so much for your videos! It helped me set up my betta fish tank!
I have a question, would you (or anyone reading this) recommend Eco Complete or Fluval Stratum for planted tanks. If so.. why?
I haven't tried Fluval Stratum yet because I saw reviews about how it's very lightweight and can cause cloudiness. That being said, I know several hobbyists who _love_ the stuff, so I'd be interested to hear what they say.
