Mushroom Zero Art - Nope. Uncompressed audio files were among some of the many things included in the leaks. Audio usually gets compressed for storage/system limitations but the ability to record HQ audio absolutely existed at the time.

The main character’s name is “Hako”, the filenames of his sprites I believe, so there’s a good chance he’s a totally unique character. There is actually a sprite sheet of the main character more explicitly as Mario, although the Hako sprite is more recent, so it’s likely that they were originally gonna go with Mario but ended up using a new character instead.
Doesn't hako mean box in japanese? Kind of a weird choice for a name considering the character hasn't anything to do with boxes
@@no1rspadeheart365 Japanese has several different ways of writing names.
In game dev it is rather common to simply use placeholder sprites when prototyping or pitching games at which point they will go through management and get the green light to be worked on by a larger team. Given the aesthetic of these sprites it is entirely possible we are seeing early prototypes for something like the game he mentioned or ray man. Not saying that is what it is, just a possibility. Since it looks similar with the backgrounds from the other games it could also be possible they just threw assets together they had laying around from various games and game prototypes in an attempt to make something entirely different that never really panned out. Being able to pick up the Monkeys makes me feel it was no doubt a puzzle game of some sorts but I suppose could have been a "collect them all" type game as well.
Hako not being Mario helps the case for Hako being the Sky Skipper.
@@no1rspadeheart365 If it started as basic Engine tests, the name Hako could refer to a pre-sprite simple box used for collision. The name could have just stuck around.
When I make games, I don't necessarily update each individual object's identifier if it's not visible in game

It’s honestly not one that’s very far fetched from our own. N-doe has a penchant for expanding the lore on older, seemingly lost characters. Sometimes for a reasons seemingly insignificant. Like how did the namesake for Daisy happen? They needed another playable human female in Mario tennis? Plus in smash it’s clear they want alternate universe characters merged to do battle. So even if they don’t go the route of rebranding “Donkey Cong” they can always throw him in as an AU DK.

I love Yoshi's island, played it hundreds of times. Baby Mario crying was definitely annoying.
I have so much lasting stress dating back to that damned baby.
There is a patch to remove the crying and beeping! The only way to play the game haha
In one of the prototypes, yoshi shoots out clocks as time goes down and it makes a sound that manages to actually be even more annoying.

Hey! I've been researching the gigaleaks myself, found a very small collection of stuff that i believe i was first to point out, like the tiny pswitches in smw and the beta flag in sm64. However, what I'm about to bring up right now, is not my find: apparently the boss in super donkey, palette, code, and all, only had the sprites changed in time for one of the prototypes of yoshi's island, but it stayed in until the final game, getting tweaking until it had proper palette, patterns, and was a actual giant version of a enemy: its hookbill the koopa! That literally proves, 100 percent, that it was, indeed, a yoshis island prototype!

The soudtracks for Plok! is insanely well made. Listen to "Plok! - Beach". The soundtrack sounds like it came from a PS1 era release. Extremely ahead of its time. 🤣🤣🤣
Pay attention at 1:13 when he stomps on the ground, 2 dust clouds appear with faces on them. These are very similar to the ones from mario maker 2 when you stomp the ground with a giant goomba shoe.
Since we're getting all these leaks hopefully we get the E3 demo of Luigi's Mansion. I love the game and it would be cool to finally play the full thing in it;s original form
It's worth noting too that Rare's original pitch for DKC was Donkey Kong vs. Super Wario. It would have pitted DK and DK Jr. up against Wario, who had turned Mario into stone and there was no one left to take on Wario but Mario's own former nemesis, Donkey Kong. It really puts some things in perspective, like why Miyamoto felt pressured to make Yoshi's Island more like DKC, because it originally was supposed to be the new Donkey Kong game for SNES.
My mind went straight to Yoshi's Island when I saw scenes from this. The monkeys are the same, and several of the ground textures. Plus the character just MOVES like characters move in that game.

when I was a little boy, before I was around my brother had an NES that broke just before I was born, and I'd always see this game cartridge in the closet.
I would sit there with it and daydream about what type of game this was, like it was an elusive title.
Lol it was to me, anyway.
To this day, I've still never played this version of donkey Kong associated with this artwork, but I have handled the physical copy of it a few times in my early days lol
Then years later after playing OG donkey Kong I was told that's what that game was.
Disapointment.
But hey, I have great memories of sitting there wondering what this game would be like, back when I didn't know who donkey Kong was, only Mario, and I wondered why Mario was hitting him with a hammer lol
Same, except instead of useing my brain, I took some av wires and "hooked up" the cartridge ( shoved the exposed end into the bottom ) and plugged the ends into the tv hoping it would work. It didn't and I broke the tv in the progress.

Just hearing about this I dismissed this as people just correlating the title of the proto with the Japanese title, but this really makes me believe that this was originally supposed to be a dk game, something that I only thought was an idiotic suggestion before this video.

Seeing the leaks unfold was like getting a belated childhood Christmas present. It was wonderful. Hopefully there’re more videos on the topic soon

the sprites at 14:00 make me think of the "Sleepwalker" game for Amiga, where you played a dog building a path and disarming traps for your owner as he marched across the screen. it might even have led to something like the Mario Vs. Donkey Kong Series where you had to deal with the little wind-up toys, manipulating their paths.

That sleep walkin guy reminds me of he idea for the game "Mario and Wario" - where Mario has a bucket on his head and you guide him through a small level. It was a japan only game and it used the SNES mouse.
I remember hearing Yoshi's Island was supposed to use digitized graphics similar to Donkey Kong Country but for whatever reason they went with sprites
The DKC style graphics came up as an idea, but they were too far along in development already, so they went with the hand drawn style to distinguish it more.
I doubt you go back to read comments on old videos but I had to say I just found the channel recently and it’s become one of my very favorites. Finding a channel to binge with hours of quality content feels like Christmas. Thank you.

I love the fact, you used "Sim City" SNES music, and footage of the "Super Mario Brothers Super Show" in the video. One thing I noticed that nobody else covering the "Gigaleak" noticed is, that sleepwalker game concept might've been intended as a spiritual successor to the now forgotten NES game "Gyromite's" Game B sleepwalking game mode.

One of my favorite things from the Yoshi island leaks were the mini games that were way more interesting then in the final game. One had a train battle with a bandit and another had a segment where helicopter Yoshi dropped bombs onto huts.

One of my dreams is to get my hands on the 3D models used for pre rendered stuff like the backgrounds from Final Fantasy, the sprites from Donkey Kong Country, and CG cutscenes from the ps1 - ps2 era. Sadly it will likely never happen because as stated in this video; most companies don't archieve things properly.
