Excellent commentary! It was my privilege to have known Ray Harryhausen for over forty years. With this film, his first solo effort, Ray knocked it out of the park! One additional factoid: Ray got the Mitchell rear projector used in the film as “paymentt” and used it in his later films.
Jack Deitz sounds like he wouldn't be out of place among 2020s studio execs. 😂 Also, I always thought the film was based on Bradbury's story. Thanks for filling in the actual events. Congrats and applause for The Road To Gojira, Finz. 👏 Looking forward to The Road Of.
Great review and end to this part of the series. That idea with the giant robot would've been great too. This one and the Valley of Gwangi have been my most favourites of Ray's work since I was a child. Looking forward to the next part and Happy New years
I love this film!!! Loved it ever since I was a little kid and I saw the trailer for it on my VHS tape called "Hollywood Dinosaurs" I bought this movie digitally on MoviesAnywhere, which allows me to watch it on MoviesAnywhere; TH-cam/GoogleTv&Movies; Vudu(fandangoAtHome); PrimeVideo; AppleTV; and Xbox. It looks GREAT streaming in 4K!!! Love your work, this is one of my favorite series on youtube to watch!
I find it funny that the title The Beast from Beneath the Sea would be used in the movie 'It Came From Beneath the Sea' where the city of San Francisco was terrorized by a giant octopus.
This production would feature three future stars - James Best (The Killer Shrews, The Dukes of Hazzard, etc), Vera Miles (who appeared in the trailer, but not the movie), and Angel Eyes himself, Lee Van Cleef, who ends up becoming the real hero of the story with his dead eye shot! (Ironically, two years later, Clint Eastwood would be the hero in his monster movie, "Tarantula", destroying the giant arachnid with napalm).
A sidenote here - the two Army radar operators were played by James Best ("The Killer Shrews") and the actor who played "Alfred" the young janitor at Macy's in "Miracle On 34th Street"). "King Kong," "The Mighty Joe Young" and "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" got me interested in big apes, dinosaurs and stop-motion animation.
I would agree about the original & clever ideas used in BEAST FROM 20,000 the - blood (i' was never sure if IT was radio active, or if it was simply some pre-historic desease) but a believable idea, not unlike the acid blood in ALIEN. Also (as in the 1990s GODZILLA the idea of it returning th New York to breed) the light house being mistaken for another of it's kind. Theses are intelligent ideas/story layers for a low budget film worthy of more money being spent even I'd say, BUT it all works perfectly.
I saw this movie on TV years ago and my dad thought it was Godzilla, little did we know, when I found the title I sought to get a dvd copy and I thankfully did. I consider this movie to be one of my favorites with animation by Ray Harryhausen based on the short story by Ray Bradbury..

I love atomic era with space invaders and mad scientist hope this genre makes a comeback also I saw that exact same picture of that table top setup in my Harryhausen book. BTW, before I read the Harryhausen one, I just got done with my Tsuburaya book and was halfway done with the Power Rangers documentary book.
Very informative and enlightening video man, thank you, and further gratitude is extended to you for your creation of the entire series, it was a wonderful journey that is appreciated infinitely!!!!!!!
Highly impressive work as always, Finz 👏🧐 Awesome that you were able to sneak this last installment in before the end of this milestone Goji anniversary year 😉👍 Was sad this fascinating, informative, and entertaining odyssey was drawing to a close 😢 …but then… Coming Soon: Road _of_ Gojira ?!?! 😳 Awwww man, strap in boys & girls, cuz like the old meme used to say: This Gon B Gud 😎
@ Which was too bad, as he certainly had more talent than the rather straight-forward plots of Beast, Behemoth, and Gorgo allowed him to demonstrate. _The Colossus of New York_ often gets overlooked in the (understandably 😅) larger shadows of the other three, but I always found it to have far more depth and a far more compelling story. 🤔
The Giant monster movies I saw that were set in New York: King Kong (1933) The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms King Kong (1976) Cloverfield Godzilla (1998) The Giant Claw
"The Beast! The Beast! The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms!" The Ray Bradbury story in question is titled 'The Fog Horn.' My only strike against the movie is that our scientist protagonist, who we get to know throughout the movie, isn't the one who destroys the monster; he created the weapon, but an almost-random soldier delivers it. It's a realistic angle, but it comes off as unsatisfying.

I always felt that if the Roland Emerich Godzilla movie had been launched as a remake of this film, it would have been much more well received.
Hmm, well as a fan of that film I can say that I'd be absolutely fine with that.
I have been saying the same thing for the last 20 years.
Eh maybe I feel like the Host is a closer remake than 1998
I agree

Archaic Xenomorph vs Woolly Mammoth stop-motion was not on my bingo card for this year, but 3:20...!
I dunno that monster alien vs robot idea would’ve gone so hard.
RIGHT. Except what if instead of being awakened by humans it came from a rift in the Pacific Ocean! But seriously it is a great idea too
