      Frank Moore I just hit over $30 for the first time in September. You’ll get there if you keep investing consistently

    • @NickOloteo
      @NickOloteo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frank Moore I use m1 finance so whenever I deposit money it puts money into whichever stock is underweighted. For example, since apple is doing so well I actually have 3.1% of my portfolio in Apple when it should be 1%. On the other hand my REITs section has been doing awful and is at 27.8% out of the 30% it should be.
      I’ve been depositing a lot of money recently so m1 has been putting money into REITs and has lifted it from 25/30% to what I mentioned earlier. If you click on my profile and go to the about me section you’ll see all my holdings and what % they should be. Basically, I pick what % I want to own of a stock and m1 puts money into until it reaches that amount and then moves on to the next stock

    I started in mid April this year. I do a mix of broad based ETF’s and (mostly) blue-chip dividend paying stocks in fields i like / know about. As of today, i have made $250 in dividends. A couple of the stocks were paying dividends, but for the time being suspended due to the pandemic but i bought them because they were at a discount. But in 4.5 months, that’s like getting 7 cents every hour. And i can imagine that when the other companies do resume dividends that this will increase.
    Personally, i am long: Microsoft, Apple, Disney, AT&T, General Mills, Comcast, Kelloggs, Coca Cola, Cedar Fair, McDonald’s, Union Pacific Railroad.

    Do you think it is better to have only one brokerage account? I have Fidelity, Schwab and TDA, but TDA is through my employer retirement plan and can't move the funds until I retire in the next couple of years. I believe not having all your eggs in one basket, but you can have to many brokerages in my opinion.

    • @GenExDividendInvestor
      @GenExDividendInvestor  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it matters too much if you have a big name brand established brokerage. The larger your portfolio gets, the more perks/attention you get from the brokerage. That's how they can have clients with $100 mil invested in them in 1 account. They give them special insurance, etc. At least, that's what I've been told.... I personally like consolidating for ease of management... #Partner36

    Why doesn’t the dividend change with the stock price , I thought that it would as it is a percentage. Also what happens if you buy mire at a later date, how does that affect the dividend? Finally, when a company increases their dividend, does that only apply to stocks purchased after the change or would the dividend change from 51 cents (your example) to something higher?

    • @GenExDividendInvestor
      @GenExDividendInvestor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because the dividend isn’t directly tied to share price (which is another reason I like dividends). If you have 10 shares of a stock and each pays 25 cents a quarter then you get $2.50 per quarter regardless if the stock price goes up or down. The dividend a company pays out only changes if their Board votes to change it. Buying more doesn’t change how much the company pays out per share, it simply means you get more paid to you. So in the above example if you bought 1 more share then the next quarter you would be paid $2.75. Now let’s say the company has their annual meeting where they raise their dividend and they increase it to 27 cents a share per quarter. Well since you now have 11 shares that means you will now get paid $2.97 per quarter from them.

      GenExDividendInvestor It might have flicked into the next vid as I posted. I would have to go and check and given how lazy I am unlikely to happen :) . It was the one with a wish list. I am still not sure but with the flu I have currently another month of no travel so I might, I say might as might not happen but swallow the cost and buy some ETF’s to go alongside my fund account rather than wait a year. I need to put more thought into that one but travel is my biggest expense and I have not been doing it for months now. I always like to invest in an ISA, what you call an IRA as I am too lazy for tax returns. I went self employed for part of a year the self assessment form just went on and on and on. I contacted an accountant who quoted 500 notes so thought F that I’ll do it myself because I don’t like wasting money unnecessarily. Hope the startup is going well.

    Fidelity meets all those criteria which is what I have. I would just get Fidelity and start buying low cost dividend ETFs. There are different dividend stock indexes that they track though. Some go more for yield and some for growth. If you are close to retirement then I’d probably go for more for yield. If you have decades until retirement then I’d probably go for dividend growth.

    are you saying that you try to time the market? also I have never heard or seen that lump sum is a better way to invest. Dollar cost averaging is seen as by far the best option. Timing the market MIGHT work out but it would be more luck if anything

    • @GenExDividendInvestor
      @GenExDividendInvestor  ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a difference between buying when a stock is inexpensive based on its intrinsic value, versus timing the market of selling your entire portfolio, trying to find an overall market bottom, then buying back in. There are tons of studies showing that lump sum investing beats dollar cost averaging, on average (obviously not every situation). There is a reason Buffett says to buy when something is on sale. That all being said, dollar cost averaging can be a good long term strategy as well.

    • @GenExDividendInvestor

      Thanks :) Its a bit more of an indirect way benefit, unlike dividends which are direct. What tends to happen when a company buys back shares is (at a high level) that there are then less shares available (think of them as taking shares out of circulation), which means each remaining share that is left is worth a bigger part of the company.. So, often what happens is that buybacks helps influence share prices to go up (which also means that can help push up earnings per share, because now there are the same earnings but there are less shares :)).

    • @GenExDividendInvestor
      @GenExDividendInvestor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Frazhier, I'll add your question as a potential future questions & answers response (or maybe as a video)... The TLDR is it depends on your goals/needs... Like, I don't hold reits in my taxable account.. It depends on things like if you need cash now or whatever... I generally hold my stocks in both account types -- i.e. historically I'd try to max out my retirement contributions then I'd invest the rest in taxable accounts. Compounding is nice in retirement accounts, whereas taxable is nice for income now (but can be worse for taxes now, depending).

    People seem to compare dividend with non dividend investing but they are very different mindsets.
    If I'm thinking non dividend I want max growth so please don't pay me your money, BUT I also accept I do not see a penny of that money until I cash out. So you can't get any income from that scenario. And no you cant mimic the same returns by selling stock, because now you have fewer tickets when the price moves. Its not just about percentage moves, your stocks are your multiple when it comes to that price action and I don't want to give up any of that multiple. Things get wonky when prices drop or rise drastically so you just cannot rely on dollar amount alone as the market moves.
    Hence, the dividend approach. I accept that growth may be less than other companies, BUT now I am getting cash in my hand without giving up my multiple. And those stocks do still move, its not like they are dead the way people act about div paying companies. So you really can't compare them you just need one or the other or to treat them differently within your portfolio.
    I would also like to touch on what many people quote when it comes to dividends. Warren B always saying why pay money if you can invest that better within your own company. However that is HIS mindset, not the market's. Some companies are expected to pay, or its an industry norm or it is meant to attract the types of owners they need or in line with their "return" goals for the stock holders. So you cannot assume they are unable to utilize cash (a bad business) thus pay out dividends.

      Howdy, and thanks :) Congrats on starting to invest -- you should treat that like any other life long good thing to do (like eating right, working out, putting energy into your relationships, etc). So in terms of how to start -- statistically speaking, time in the market tends to beat timing the market -- thus if a relative asked me I'd say first pay off any high interest debt... then create an emergency fund... and then start investing (rather than store up a lot of cash to invest). i.e. I think bits and pieces sooner tends to win out (however, each situation is different, so no guarantees on that).
