My great uncle flew on that mission :) 349TH SQDN… CREW JOINED THE 100TH ON 24 DEC 1944. FLEW FIRST MISSION 17 JAN 45 (HAMBURG) AND THE 100TH'S FINAL MISSION (ORANIENBURG) 20 APR 45. THEY FLEW FIVE (5) "CHOW HOUND" MISSION, DROPPING FOOD IN HOLLAND AFTER 20 APR 45.
@@newbeeify - The actor who plays Rosie is somehow even better-looking than Austin Butler, yet it was not distracting in the least. Butler is a very talented actor, Cleven just was not the role for him. Despite looking like the Hollywood stereotype of a doomed, romantic WWII-era bomber pilot.
Crosby was absolutely my favorite character. So relatable with his struggles with flying. Just overall a hardworking guy who did his job, not trying to be a hero
Rosie was my favorite character too, which surprised me because he came in so late in the show...and Austin Butler was there😂 52 missions wasn't it?! Loved him!
52 combat missions, but 53 missions if you count the airlift of a “work” camp he participated in after VE-Day. Rosie was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his final combat mission, due to making sure that raid was successful.
For the record, Quinn didn't get caught because he didn't know how to write the date correctly. Him writing the date "incorrectly" was why he survived. They shoot one of the three men, and in a quick cut you see that man wrote the date the European way, revealing him to be a German spy.
@@tannerhadra803 We're talking about correctly or incorrectly based on how Europeans write the date. I used "incorrectly" because he wrote the date as we do in America. You and I are saying the exact same thing
For me this works best in the middle portion, where we have lost so many characters it hits hard. I wasn't even making an effort to learn the new guys faces, because I knew they wouldn't be around for long.
My problem was there were too many characters!! Was kinda hard to keep track of all of them, especially since some of them disappear from the show unceremoniously. Ex. That baby faced kid that gets shot down behind enemy lines early on in the show. They make a bit deal of it until he gets smuggled out and then we never hear from him again.
Unfortunately that’s just how the air war was. Not like a single company of soldiers that sticks together. Those guys who escaped France had to be sent back to the states for the rest of the war
I don't think too many characters was the issue, it was lack of development. Band of Brothers and the Pacific did a great job with making us care about a large group of characters.
The 100th Bomb Group was famous for two things…. having an abnormal high casualty rate (especially within its first 90 days of combat operations), and Rosie Rosenthal who was their star pilot.
“Masters of the Air” would have been a much stronger miniseries, had it just focused on Rosie Rosenthal and Crosby. I understand wanting to tell the backstory of how and why the Munster raid ended up being such a disaster for the 100th, especially since that mission was what led to Rosie becoming a living legend. It is just Cleven and Egan really were only supporting characters to that history, and probably should have been treated as such in the series. Apart from Cleven’s escape, there was not much of a compelling story and Egan is basically a composite character. He existed but almost everything the audience sees is transposed onto him from other airmen. Whereas, everything with Rosie and Crosby (apart from Operation Chowhound) is a dramatization of events that happened to them.
I loved Band of Brothers but Pacific lost me. Masters of the Air sounded really good but I wanted to watch a review first and I'm so glad to have this video!! Gonna check it out!!
My great uncle finished his 25 missions and this particular mission he wrote about was very interesting. ""Our first mission on my return from leave was a tough one. There were many flak guns guarding the target and several German fighter airfields near our route to the target. For this mission there would be a full colonel for division flying in my position. Out squadron will be flying group lead. In this position our plane is equiped with Mickey, a through the clouds bombsight. The target is Nuremberg. "
My grandad was a Tuskegee airman and I’m honest they did the Tuskegee airmen an injustice. I think that because they advertised them to be in the show and it was not how me or most people, who were excited for them to be featured in it, wanted them to be featured in it. I was expecting their story to be told as a whole, not them in a POW camp. Aside from that is was a decent show, although a bit rushed in a few categories.
4:06 no? He was never grounded in the first place. He was promoted to group navigator(because he was good, not airsick), but he still flew from time to time. In his book he says that his airsickness partly went away when he was in the lead due to the stress, even though he still suffered from it, especially on low altitude missions.
Austin Butler's strength is in extravagant characters like Elvis or his character in Dune 2 Feyd Rautha. In this he was way too pretty to be a ww2 pilot plus his character doesn't really do much but thats not his fault coz he can do alot and he has showed that in his other works
I was banned from watching this with my family as I kept shouting at the telly about it being wrong all the time. They got fed up with me pretty quickly.
It was good but how come the writers kept having a go at British pilots for area bombing instead of precision bombing - conveniently forgetting about American bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki?
The nukes ended the war in Japan and prevented a full land invasion. The fire bombing of Tokyo on the other hand is an actual issue and was more devastating.
Ill be honest with this show and feyd rautha, im really happy to see austin butler act his way through to success and not be typecast as the cool hot guy.
Band of Brothers is still the best, but this was nice. The pacing was really off though. They should have introduced the POWs and Tuskegee airmen sooner imo
Band of Brothers was the best by a long shot. The Pacific was good but felt a little all over the place. Masters was better than the Pacific but is no BoB.
series are great, very much interesting to watch.. but there are some buggy things to me - like, especially main characters are too hot, too beautifull for this kind of thing :D just too perfect i donno... another example - in a camp scene, everyone looks like on holidays.. again, looking perfect...anyway, as flying scenes are so immersive and probably very accurate, the other scenes are reminding the viewer of holiwood
I own BOB and TP. And I find it garbage 😂😂 how they treated and released it to home media.I can't find copies but have no problem finding the previous two.
I loved Band of Brothers 10/10 watched it twice Really liked The Pacific 8/10 again watched it twice Masters was barely watchable with horrible CGI at moments, 6/10 never going to re watch it.
The john egan actor could pass off as the real one but the real life gale cleven looked like herbert hoover instead of elvis. The casting director must have reallly liked austin butler.
It's 5 am anyone up at this time is almost certainly preparing to go into work only reason I'm up rn is to get my 9 year old ready for the school bus 😅

Austin Butler was distracting because he looked too damn pretty. In so many scenes I’m like HOW THE HELL DOES HIS HAIR LOOK SO GOOD ALL THE TIME?!?!?
Austin Butler’s just like that. 😮💨
Even in movies where doesn't even have hair.
@@santos8468 Damn right. He’s so handsome.
It’s because he has aids.
Fact,
Gonna be honest, seeing the final mission where all our main characters get to fly together dropping food for the Netherlands brought tears to my eyes
Operation Manna Chowhound.

I still remember watching that massive airbattle, rewinding every second over and over again. Truly immersive. I loved it.

Relatable.
As talented as Austin Butler is, he was unfortunately miscast in this series.

The guy who wrote the date incorrectly was the guy who got shot, it literally shows him writing and then pans up to his face

Episodes 5 and 6 were definitely the best in the series.
13:59 another scene that really got to me was Bucky and the other downed airmen seeing that train with all the people reaching out and begging
Rosie Rosenthal saved “Masters of the Air”, and made the miniseries watchable. Every time the story focused on him, it was infinitely better for it.
sAvEd, wAtChAbLe ok sure
Well dude was a badass through and through in real life so yeah it makes telling his story much easier. Dude flew 52 missions over Europe.
Thanks for this, finished the series sometime ago but this video made me remember why I loved it so much ❤
Tuskegee airmen i wish had more screen time.
They have their own movie, I felt like they only put them in the series so that they could say they did have Black Characters in the series.
