    I've been using the original 4DFWD for over a year now for gym on intense 1 hr long elliptical training sessions 2-3 times a week, best shock absorption i ever had on my feet, eva,etpu, air, zoom air, nothing came even close. And after complete break in after all this time it still preforms just as well because the midsole is so durable, it even lost the squeak it had when it was newer and now when i walk it is dead silent.

    • @FootDoctorZach
      @FootDoctorZach  ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Yeah I honestly didn't even think about these for elliptical but it makes sense with the motion of the machine - glad they're working well for you still

    I’m a biomedical engineer and adidas 4d tech inspired my senior capstone. I really appreciate how you went into the engineering! Hearing about it all made me all excited about shoes and I really want to try these now that it’s not just a gimmick. I’m looking forward to the future when personalized midsole lattices are printed from foot scans!

    • @FootDoctorZach
      @FootDoctorZach  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Very cool! Yeah the print on demand was the original form of these a while back but the infrastructure to do it was so labor intensive and costly they went back to this type of modeling - would be cool to see what happens with it in a few years

    As someone who's getting a Material Science degree soon, I am so glad I found your channel. I got the pair for 50% so I searched for reviews (post-buying it lmao). The way you tackle materials and how it is applied is very unique and I've yet too see a TH-camr who does this.

    I have last year’s 4DFWD model and I love them. They’re the best running shoes I’ve run in, and they’re also really comfortable for casual wear. I’d say on the same level as the Ultraboosts, the classic style Ultraboosts that is, haven’t tried any of the newer style Ultraboosts. Even for running I’d say they’re better than the Ultraboosts or any other foam running shoe, as you can really feel the midsole pushing you forward by a lot, making you less tired.

  • @liquidSpin
    @liquidSpin ปีที่แล้ว +24

    I agree. I have both the new 4DFWD shown in the video as well as the Ultra 4DFWD shoes and they are by far the best most comfortable jogging/running shoes i’ve ever worn in my entire life. Better than the boost or zoomx or every other sole on the market.

    Just bought the original 4d4wd and they did not disappoint really does like the shoe pushes you forward and is great for running! I shaved a minute 30 secs of my pb for a 5k run compared to my old gp turbos I was using to run in! I'd love to say I was the difference but I think the shoe really does get you further for less, could still do a short sprint at the end so agree with you it makes you more efficient with more energy at the end! Hopefully it's durability is good long term, I've come to expect nothing less from Adidas!

    Hi, I haven't had the chance to fit these on. But being in isolation due to covid and trying to make the sale deadline, I'm planning to buy online. Just wanted to ask, concerning the forward propulsion it gives, do you actually feel it? Can I use it like in casual setting and still feel comfortable? Like with public speaking onstage, will it like compel me forward (even if I don't want to) with every step, like will it cause stress with me trying to fight the propulsion? Thank you in advance, sir!

    Randomly found this review from the algorithm after watching adam savage gawk at the technology that makes them. A question for me would be, as someone who doesnt run, but suffers from several of the foot problems you described like shin splints, heel pain and even some knee tightness just on long walks, would this still be a good shoe recommendation to alleviate those problems?

  • @TOXIN543
    @TOXIN543 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hi Zach, I'm still not convinced there is a benefit from the lattice structure of the shoe compared to foam. When you land the shoe moves ~1mm forward, that is a mechanical gain but it does not contribute to energy return. It might even push you backwards on push off as the lattice decompresses. The TPU lattice might be resilient (efficient), but it's quite firm and will store a limited amount of energy compared to soft foams. Add in the increased weight and this shoe is rather a lifestyle sneaker than a running shoe.

    • @FootDoctorZach
      @FootDoctorZach  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on the structure of the lattice if those layers were set in the other direction yeah it’d exert a backward force - the shape of it acts like a semi rigid shank throughout the shoe from what I experienced - I’m fine with increased weight if I’m getting something in return - plus it’s not TPU it’s EPU which gives quite a bit more - ETPU or TPU would be alittle unforgiving IMO for this kind of design - there’s still going to be a lot of people who want foam but to me the science is good just depends what you want to feel underfoot

    they look nice, little too expensive for my taste. Personally, I like very stiff, padded running shoes, especially when I'm training. A little weight and stiffness helps prevent injuries for mid-foot runners, plus when you switch over to spikes or lighter race shoes/socks, you feel the difference more significantly. Adidas has the problem of being too light. Even in your video, on those close ups, you could see your foot deforming over the left or right of the shoe when you planted your foot, which isn't really good for the foot. If Adidas were serious about making good running shoes, I think they need to slow down on the innovation and work on making a shoe that actually feels solid and secure. I have my doubts that these shoes are going to do that.

      There would need to be something containing lateral movement- shearing is tough on lattice designs

      @@FootDoctorZach i was thinking an encapsulated 4d. Like how they do boost at times. Some sort of semi translucent side wall of sorts. Or using it in the heel and forefoot like zoom. You are the pro at this tech stuff so I'm sure you know the limitations.

    Hi Dr. Zach, thank you for the amazing explanation in this informative video. I had a quick question. I play tennis on the hard court for 6 hours every week. I recently am suffering from the jumper’s knee and I suspect because I don’t have the right kind of shoes. I tried the 4DFWD 2 shoes and felt very comfortable for walking. Do you think these could be a good fit for playing tennis on hard court especially for the knee? Thank you in advance!

      @FootDoctorZach  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah you’d roll over in a sec in these - they’re better than other running shoes for sure for stability but not for tennis - jumpers knee needs to be managed under supervision so I’d talk to your local orthopedic surgeon

    Ran 20 miles right out the box with these shoes. 9:05 pace per mile…. I actually grabbed 2 pairs when I got them. The selling point for me was the continental sole. I just couldn’t wrap my head around it.

    by ver. 3 or 4 id love to see them make these lighter. weight is the main drawback i feel for the 4d line

      I think with each generation of them the weight will come down as the material gets stronger per grid

    Good review, how about stability? Is it recommended for asymmetrically foot/leg due to flat feet/over pronation also slight knee valgus on one side? Does 4D feature help it without add orthotics insole?

    • @FootDoctorZach
      @FootDoctorZach  ปีที่แล้ว

      They’re more stable than most running shoes- in terms of knee issues you should try them on first because some people like the feel of a dynamic midsole vs some like a stiff setup- it’s all personal preference , I will say these have better shock absorption than 99.9% IMO

    How about using these shoes for deadlifting? I mainly use it for running but at times I want to use it for other workouts as well? Do we know the maximum weight capacity for these shoes?

    🌴These shoes are Incredibly Very Good for long distance.Short distance my feet hurt.1st try on they feel incredible but day to day there is no cushion right beneath the foot it's flat all the way through.Maybe a purchase of a better insole would correct the problem.Digging in long distance incredible but everyday casual forget it my feet hurt.The shoe looks good and premium but for me my foot hurt.The bottoms the plastic gets brittle with cold weather and eventually breaks apart but hold together long enough to get another pair.Also go 1 size smaller and they'll fit perfectly there way bigger and not true to size.
