You were talking about size perspective with the small boat of fishermen…. We lived on cumberland island, GA and the kings bay nuclear submarine base was across inter coastal from it. We’d go to town in our boat and big ola subs would be coming in the inlet sometimes and come up beside you. That was neat. I enjoy your videos.

That wind is from an unusual low pressure system over the Great Lakes (for this time of year). You should get plenty of rain in the NW part of the river drainage area. Ohio River should get some also.. I know its been dry in Midwest.

Are tows smaller/shorter when going downstream with a lot of current? I noticed that boat that passed you headed down at 26:00 was really sliding going around the bend, like the head of the tow was being pushed sideways. It occurred to me that if he had as long a tow as you had, it would have been really hard to control the tow going around that bend. And conversely, going upstream, I would think a longer tow would be "easier" to control as you have the current to work against. Correct me where I am wrong please!
You are in the area of being right. 👍🏻 5 long (1000’) it generally the industry standard for maximum length. There are some men that push 6 long ((1200’), but it is only on a handful of larger vessels with men that have had training for it. There was big stir in industry, and lawsuits over money and safety when ADM started doing it regularly (and expected) back in late 1990s. It sparked industry wide changes that for a time were helpful. Short memories have allowed the pay scale to slip a bit.
And heck, another question. Sometimes there appear to be floats trailing behind the outside aft most barges outboard corners. Are those a telltale for some purpose?
Called “flanking” buoys, used as visual aid for speed of river current in relation to the vessel. Young pilots primarily use them as they are very helpful for flanking when they have a lot going on. I don’t use them, and have guys on my watch pull them out beginning watch, and put them back in before going off watch. I tend to always damage or loose them and would get mad that I had to order something I didn’t use. Haha
“Easier” is very subjective type deal. Many variables to consider. One barge downriver is definitely easier than 30 northbound, with same horsepower on a slack river. Generally I prefer southbound, as it’s less stopping for traffic and such.

I’m a 100 ton captain and actually steer that bad bill, it is dangerous to control the boat from outside the hand rails like that but he does that to maneuver astern easier with them little twin screws and no backing rudders
Somebody need to confiscate the camera from this videographer! Most of this video is horrible because of the camera moving all over the place all the time. And the zooming! The guy loves his zoom! This is an example of how not to make a video.

Just imagine each loaded barge has approximately 1500 tons of cargo !! Plus the weight of the barge!!

Actually it’s going through some sort of environmental change. The water is draining into some kind of cave system just past St. Louis

Over twenty years. Pay depends on quite a few variables..area, experience, tow size…
Generally nowadays river pilots can make $600-$1400 per day.
