Pet Sounds was a slow burn for me too..that said, I always loved ' Don't Talk ( Put Your Head On My Shoulder) which is Brian Wilson at his transcendent best. Free are the masters of rock understatement.. wonderfully simple songs performed immaculately.Paul Rodgers is a top tier rock vocalist...Highway is probably my favourite. I've heard of Trapeze but unfamiliar with them. The Pig cover is interesting, love me a gimmix sleeve!. Great finds
God Only Knows stuck me immediately on Pet Sounds. What a beautiful lyric and arrangement. Free are just incredible! The debut album Tons of Sobs is just like ripping, heavy, hard rockin blues! Highway is a great record as well. I really like the song Mr. Big, and pretty muh everything on Fire and Water. Trapeze is a decent group, I would say nothing too mind-blowing, but solid rock. Pyg takes my vote as the best gimmick sleeve out there! Thanks for watching ✌☮
I remember seeing that Pyg record shown every once in a while in the early days of the VC. I also am a big fan of the “oink” cover. Great pickups all around. ✌️Cheers!
I love the album cover on that record. I doubt that I will ever see that one since there is no US press, but I'll keep an eye out. Thanks for watching ✌☮
Thank you! I couldn't believe it when I pulled it out! I need to give the 2nd of May a listen, that one is really impossible to find here i te states. Thanks for watching ✌☮
Dude that pet sounds is still pretty dang clean. I’ve been collecting records for like 20 years and every copy I’ve run across in the wild has been totally trashed. I paid $30 for mine and it looks like it was used as an air hockey puck.
It is quite a nice copy! Side one is pretty immaculate, but side two gas some scuffs, but it plays through great! The only other copy I have seen was probably used as an air hockey puck as well, and 35 dollars haha. I am overall very happy with this copy, and will probably have it for a very long time! Thanks for watching ✌☮
I picked up that Rare Earth debut a few months ago. Some great hard-edged Detroit sound on there. I've actually had Fort Mudge for a number of years now. A vinyl friend's therapist was the bass player of the group funny enough. Shocking Blue was a good comparison! Always look forward to seeing what you share.
I really dig that Rare Earth record. Ah I see, I remember seeing it on your instagram haha. That is certainly an interesting connection to a band member, but really cool! Thanks for watching Derek, it means a lot to me! I have a lot of catching up to do on your channel, maybe sometime later this week. ✌☮
Trapeze had Deep Purple and Judas Priest connections as that band featured Glenn Hughes who later played in Mk. III & IV Purple (Burn, Stormbringer, Come Taste the Band) and the drummer was Dave Holland who later played on all the 1980s Priest albums.
I didn't know of the deep purple connectiom with Glen Hughes. Dave Holland gives me bad vibes, so I hadn't really looked into their past/futures... Thanks for watching ✌☮
@@sorinvinyl1523 Glenn Hughes replaced Roger Glover in Purple and he brought in a (then) completely unknown David Coverdale to replace Ian Gillan. It's always surprising when you get a fairly obscure album and find members ending up in much more famous bands, like in Trapeze.
i have a feeling you have seen the film Love and Mercy, am I right? if not, go and see it right away. I don't think I would have went down the Pet Sounds rabbit hole without having seen it first.
I had that Rare Earth in the 90's, I didn't like it much. They do bring a little money, I've seen them much higher that $30. I need to revisit it and see if I still feel the same about it. That PYG album cover is Phat. I've seen that uncensored MC5 with the red 2nd labels before. Most will have the tan or gold labels. Gotta say, yours is a beauty. 🍄🍌🌵
I quite enjoy the Rare Earth record, I think its pretty good. They do go for a decent chunk of change. The Pyg album cover is probably one of the best in my collection. I'd like to own a clean gold label copy. I'm super happy with my copy. Thanks for watching ✌☮
Sorin My Friend!! " Pet Sounds"... Is A Religious Experience!! And I Say That As A Christian!! lol.. Good For You In Understanding It's Beauty!! Great Video And Finds My Friend!!
It really doesn't haha! I always crank it up at that part. The first time I played the copy in this video, I literally jumped out of my seat! Thanks for watching ✌☮
My copy of 'Kick Out The Jams” is not a gatefold and it is uncensored (I too was thrilled when the MF bomb went off). I don’t remember what I paid but it couldn’t have been more than $12 or $15 and it’s in, at least, VG+ condition. I store it next to my Stooges LPs. 🤘
Interesting, I didn't know there was a non gatefold version. $12 is a steal no matter what version, thats such an incredible record. Definitely pairs really well with the Stooges! Thanks for watching ✌☮
Awesome finds man, it sounds like the digging where you are is absolutely pristine. I’m in downtown Chicago and everything here is picked squeaky clean with nothing to be found, so I just rely on eBay per usual. One of these days I’d like to make a video of my finds over the last several months in your style. Also I think I have the same exact pressing plant and version of MC5 😁
It is pretty pristine in rural Pennsylvania. I definitely dig through a lot of country records, but I come across gems often. You definitely should make a recent finds video! Awesome with the MC5! I believe it is an Allentown pressing. Thanks for watching ✌☮
I don't have the best or nost impressive set up by any means. I am scared I would be scrutinized haha! I think I'll show it off soon. I use an old technics SL-B2 from the 80s with an Ortiphon Catridge, hooked up to a Sony reciever and SVS speakers. My dad pretty much had all of this stuff from the 80s haha. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching ✌☮
Brilliant finds there Sorin...too many to mention. That Pyg sleeve is so cool. Fairly recently added it to my Discog wants. Fort Mudge and Bubble Puppy are great. Some lovely funky pick ups. La Clave is in my wants. Blackbyrds is a classic. I must revisit the Thelma Houston LP...must be 20 years since I last had it on. The debut Rare Earth is great and another steal...think I paid $20 in the 00s for it. Have you noticed their 3rd LP Generation on Discogs? Now that is rare! May Blitz...killer LP! Always regretted not buying a perfect US copy for £3 in the early 00s at a fair. I only recently got a UK swirl but it cost a bit more than £3 😄. Regards Nige
Thank you! The Pyg sleeve is one of the best in my collection! Bubble Puppy is one of my all time favorites! The Thelma Houston lp has been on my turntable a lot recently, I've been really digging it! Woah, not sure how I missed Generation, thats definitely one to look out for! £3 for May Blitz?! I would've loved to dig in the early 2000s haha. An OG UK is really cool! Thanks for watching Nige ✌☮
You mentioned the track "Land Of Nod" from the Rare Earth LP. I have a version by a band called The Sunliners, (aka Rare Earth). It's the same version, and a little pricey 45. Totally agree with your "Fort Mudge..." comments. It has it's moments, especially with the female vocalist. I hadn't thought of the Shocking Blue comparison before. Interesting... I kinda hear what you mean. May Blitz's "Smoking The Day Away" is a killer!
UK northern soul collector here. I've got the Sunliners presumably first 45 on Golden World. I bumped into two of the group back in sometime '79-81 in Bob Mays record shop in Detroit. They knew a lot about soul music. Both " All alone" and "Land of Nod" were arranged and produced by guys more associated with soul 45s - Sonny Sanders and Dennis Coffey.
Interesting, I had no idea they had a 45 under a different name. I really enjoy it! Fort Mudge is a solid lp. May Blitz is absolutely amazing! Thanks for watching ✌☮
I know I'm in the minority, but I absolutely loathe the Beach Boys. Especially that album. To me the harmonies are screechy and nasaly. The lyrics seem to be written by a bedwetting freshman. Very overrated in my opinion. *JUST MY OPINION*
Thats totally fair. It took me a long time to get into them, and I really still think Pet Sounds is overrated in many senses. I was shocked to see that #1 in the rolling stone top 500. But I do think its a Beautiful record with some gorgeous arrangements, and I love the harmonies! To each their own! ✌☮
