  • "...The time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn." (Lk 2:6-7)
“Panunuluyan” is a Filipino word for “asking lodgings.” It was developed in Mexico during the Spanish colonization as the nine-day Christmas ritual called “posadas.” Then, it was brought to the Philippines by the Mexican sailors from the galleons. Panunuluyan is celebrated on Christmas eve inspired by the narration of Jesus Christ’s birth in the Gospels representing how Mary and Joseph looked for lodging in Bethlehem. Dressed by traditional costumes, the actors knock the door of some houses requesting a place to stay, but they are not accepted "...there was no room for them in the inn..." (Lk 2:7). Finally, they are allowed to stay in a manger and Jesus is born.
This video shows the Panunuluyan represented by the members of the Youth Ministry of St. Francis Xavier Parish, Diocese of Novaliches on December 24, 2019.
