  • It's so important to share your family stories. In this poignant video, Findmypast's Cari interviews her mum Sylvia about her experiences of coming to the UK and working in the NHS.
Sylvia left her home in St Vincent & the Grenadines in the 1960s, and made a new life for herself in England, the 'Mother country'. She worked as a nurse in the NHS for 45 years. This is her story.

I came from St. Vincent to England in 1961 at age 14. I can identify with Sylvia's experience in St. Vincent and England! You're so right; slavery nor Africa was never mentioned back in St. Vincent. It was all about England. I knew my Great Grandfather (George Edwards) and Great Grandmother (Lara Edwards). But they never talked about slavery. My Great Grandfather saved many people in his fishing boat from the dangers of the 1902 La Soufriere volcano eruption. He lived in Wallilabou at the time.

I trust findmypast will be having a white only month sometime soon?

@@findmypast but your singling out a particular race to focus on, i thought seperating people by skin colour was called racism? You can't have a month for just one race and not all others.

@@Punk1984Rock Celebrating differences is not racism. On balance, there are far less records on Findmypast which reflect African and Caribbean heritage. Why should the BHM focus offend? How does this focus affect existing records? Your post implictly reflects your bias!

@@SuperJAMAICAJAMAICA if your all for celebrating difference then i'm sure you would agree there should also be a month celebrating white history then? My bias? We keep being told we are all the same and should be treated equally one minute then dividing people up by skin colour the next.

@@Punk1984Rock tell me how this world is equal? Please give me a history lesson and also give me a full evaluation of 'equality in the 21st century and what that looks like? BHM is only celebrated one month per year. What is celebrated the other 11 months? No such thing as equality in my book. Society treats people very differently. The fact there is legislation tasked to redress inequality speaks for itself.! Why not promote 'WHM' since you are so passionate?
