  • This video will show you how to replace the front output shaft seal on a 3rd Gen 4Runner (1996-2002) transfer case. After 250K miles or more, these may begin to leak and its a fairly simple fix as long as you have a few basic tools and know-how. The process should be pretty much the same on the rear output shaft seal, but I'd encourage you to hop over to Timmy the Toolman's channel to get the specifics.

hey man great video, but i didnt see how you got the old seal out. at 8:40 it skips to the marred threads on the shaft but skips over the removal of the old seal. what did you use to remove it? thanks for the vid again 👌

Hey sorry about that, you should be able to get in there with a flathead screwdriver and pop it out, but the better option is to get a seal removal tool (look em up online) they are cheap, effective, and less likely to scratch or gouge the sealing surface when you're removing the seal. You want to take your time here because if you damage the sealing surface, you will end up with another leak. Good luck!

Does fluid come out when you disconnect the shaft? Do you have to refill the fluid after?

Some fluid will likely come out and you should make sure it's topped off at the correct level when you are done. You can try parking so the vehicle is at an angle and that should minimize and leaking
