For me, I have actually gone for older bikes for XC racing, 2011-2013 Specialized Epics, but added dropper posts and shorter stems with 780 bars. The only time I use my Down Country 120mm travel Polygon Siskiu D6 (immensely upgraded) is for gnarlier courses that have jumps/drops.

Hi Danny! I really appreciate your videos and I watch them from start to finish. Although in my youth I did another sport (SPEEDWAY) after the age of 35 (waw, 15 years ago) I fell in love with MTB. You know, I grew up with 26 "MTB bikes and it hurts my soul that they are slowly disappearing from the market. I don't think this it's an evolution in biking, I think it's just business.
Thanks Danny, I'm own a Merida 96 9 XT 2018 (Upgraded to 1x11), coming from a 2015 alloy hardtail couldn't be happier. Mine has the cheaper frame and alloy rear triangle so it weights 12 Kg... not a big deal (maybe Changing the Fork and Wheels can reduce up to 800 grams) because the riding in general is better and the groupset is full XT so it works like a charm. Never tried thoroughly another full sus but I thing my bike is great for aggresive XC, even now I'm hitting some serious Enduro trails (no jumping yet) and feel very comfortable. I was used to take two bottles, now I only carry one 800ml (1L bottle only if I'm not doing very technical stuff), I'm not sure hoy safe is to carry a bottle under the diagonal tube, maybe I tried this summer on a very long ride I have planned. Besides drivetrain update the only things I've changed (so far) is the 80mm stem by a 70mm (both -17º) and the Ikons by Vittoria Mezcal. I thing I got the best bike for the price I paid, any other below 11Kg is at least USD1500 (brand new).
About your tire width, maxxis messures there tires filled to the brim of pressure so 60 psi if you run around the minimum psi for carbon wheels youd be using around 25 psi and the maxxis would be around the same width as the schwalbe
1. Congrats for the extended comparison! 2. The new Merida is looking a lot as my new RockRider XC900S (hta, geo, design). 3. Name of the song pls (at the final of the video)?
I foresee one problem with the new rear triangle and that is over time that stress fatigue fractures will appear down near the rear axel elbow. It will mostly affect owners of second hand owners of bikes and probably after the bikes are five to ten years old, as they will not have any warranty on the carbon frames. Original owners will most likely covered buy their original owner warranty unless the manufacturer places a sunset warranty or warranty exclusion clause on their frame . By the time you add a dropper post to your 2017 bike it will be much heavier than the 2020 model and it will be front heavy because of the upside down front forks with all of it's inherent design problems with torsional stiffnessand weight , which is why they have been side lined for downhill and moto use.
don't worry about Shimano cassettes looking 'worn' when there's been not much use, they use ramps that will ware any paint/coatings away very quickly yet will give many many miles reliable service. when i replace my current SRAM equipt bike i will return to Shimano, i really dislike srams shifters with a passion
Wider rims is just a trend, for a new bike Merida had to include them. For Cape Epic Hermida swapped 30's to 23's on the One-Twenty because, that's right, you don't need them.
Hey Sickbiker! :) I have a bike fitting question. You said that you like your saddle nose tip down a bit. Dont you feel too much pressure on your hands or on your legs? If i tip down the saddle to release the pressure on my ass, i constantly slide and fall forward and i have too much pressure on my legs and hands. How to find your weight balance on the bike?
I tip my saddle forward about 10 degrees during the racing season and it doesn't bother me at all! It does make you slow down a bit on the descents but the performance on the climbs definitely outweighs that. It's also comfortable since it doesn't hurt your crotch if you're a guy
What beginner frame with shock and downhill fork do you recommend? The frame to about $ 820 in the fork is about $ 130-230 because I want to limit myself to 1400 usd with the whole bike. There may be enduro parts because they are similar and sometimes cheaper. Anyway, it's important that must by durable
Climbing I think is still priority for xc but if you can build a bike that can match in climbing ability with the older bike and improve the downhill capability its a no brainer if your looking to improve your efficiency and speed . Not sure the wide rims and tires get any real benefit over the more narrow rims . I am at 23mm rims and running 2.3 tires . I ran 2.35 and 2.4 but the 2.3 front and back seem to be the goldilock zone for my 23mm rims Tires are the most important factor I believe . I went to a more aggressive tire in my high desert riding area with maxxis minion dhr2 front and back . I went from a wider lighter casing tire to a more narrow heavier casing tire but since its more narrow I did not gain a lot of extra weight and the bonus I got better grip ( very important to me ) in my loose rocky desert conditions . I have been pleasantly surprised at going in this direction . Very nice comparison of past and present technology
I just feel that as a XC racer, they should not made the head angle slacker. What made the bike more stable for going downhill means it's less efficient for climbing...
You should try one... definitely no slower climbing. Front doesnt lift any easier either. The fork offset is now 44mm instead of 51mm too on all these slacker XC bikes so just as "nimble" too.
Excellent explanation. You do a better job of explaining this in a second language than most can in their native tongue. Well done!

If I was going to buy one I'd definitely go for 120mm. Preferably with 66.0-66.5 HTA. This is the sweet spot.

The newer model geo looks better for technical descents, where as the older better for climbing.

The Seatpost part that clamps the saddle is on a rocker, you Don't use the bolts to tip the saddle you have to knock the cup loose and move it...

I have learned so much from your videos!
Please do one like this for your SRAM bikes.
Thank you Danny for this great video!
Looks like the closest I’ll get to owning is watching yours on TH-cam. Beautiful bike. Well spoken review. Thc
What handlebar width do you run?
Nicely explained. Love the videos.

Thanks for the a presentation the new bike "vs" the old. 😉

Exactly! The rockrider is very similar
Why didn’t you say anything about steeper seat angle in modern bikes? How that works?
Very nice and usefull comparing. Thanks.
Seems like a light version of a trail bike. I like it.

Rockrider solves this problem by using an aluminum rear triangle :/
Unless you buy a Specialized. Second owner gets two additional years on the frame warranty.

And my favorite is actually the twister 👌

I had narrow rims (21.25) and I broke them... dt swiss 1200!! So I have different opinion (minimiun - 25mmm)
I don't like that way how all XC its going, these days XC race have descents like 15 years ago DH.
When I raced in Alaska in the 90s, the majority of our XC races had fast downhill sections in them. It just depends on where you live.
Me neither, mainly cuz I only excell in endurance and not in tech

@@fialovy5493 only one retailer in North America that I'm aware of is ZM Cycle in Toronto/Kitchener. Great guys too! They're on pinkbike

Waaa❤️
The manufacturers should try new things out, otherwise the riders would not upgrade.
i dislike lower BB, catches roots and rocks on the pedals... for my kind of terrain the new bikes are not improving...
Agree, I like the BB high
Stems are getting shorter like dh bikes. İn Last year

Why would u want an XD bike?
