Something clever I'd like to see years from now is this new era eventually circling all the way back to the original, and somehow permanently ridding us of the Hourglass and other timelines as well. Perhaps picking up from where Armageddon left off and going forward from there. Working in characters from the rebooted eras as it goes forward.

The only way i would ever forgive NRS at this point is if they did the whole DC multiverse thing where the company listened to the fans and bring back the old continuity or at least the characters. Yes I did hate how much they 💩 on the legacy characters in MKX but i would much rather see how that story plays out. MK11 just said “hey let’s not tell an original story but rather a marvel equivalent version of Mortal Kombat” Kitana and Liu Kang as emperors of nether realm would be so much fun to see invading earth. All the disdain and grudge would be so cool to see. How did Mileena end up in the netherealm hierarchy? Servant to her sister or faithful companion.
At that point Mortal Kombat had one timeline and one universe so all of this stuff actually mattered. Nowadays any plot lines could be easily erased by the “oh crap reset timeline cuz you know multiverses are cool now” excuse. They really need to stop with MK1. I just now they’re also going to make story mode DLC which would be another equivalent to the aftermath DLC where some storyline plays out before getting erased again to “setup” the next game. Here’s hoping Injustice doesn’t suffer the same multiverse erasing treatment. Its controversial but at least the story actually matters since it won’t get erased

In the past 2 MK timelines, there was a build in tension and stakes. 1st timeline went from Shang to Shao to Shao + Sindel to Shinnok to Onaga to literal Armageddon. 2nd timeline went the same except almost all the heroes died and became evil zombies, which makes the threat of Shinnok much higher because there are less heroes overall, and then leading to the time-manipulating Kronika as the biggest challenge (even though the story was done poorly).
MK1 feels like you’re watching season 1, but then it skipped to the season 3 finale in the last chapter. It’s kinda similar to the Battle Of The Realms movie where it went from the tournament with Shao and then immediately going into the ONE BEING a.k.a the strongest thing in MK.

It’s because NRS writers are trash. They’re lazy and one dimensional.
MK1’s story was sooooo bland and then jt went to totalshit when 1000x different variants from different timelines all gathered to fight to the death without a build up. Liu Kang and Shang somehow just managed to convince a bunch of other Titans to come fight in a royal rumble at the pyramid. Such garbage writing.

MKX was a controversial story but at least it was a self contained story. It feels like ever since MKX NRS has been too scared to tell a story because they are scared of pissing off the fans. @@simosan22thats not the problem. DC has a multiverse and they’ve shown death still holds value. What NRS needs is to stop holding these damn multiverse storylines. They need to move on and create a fleshed out world. Once they have a set continuity then people will get attached to characters hope they don’t die. I mean DC has been the one with whole multiverse for the longest and they’ve created different worlds with beloved version of characters but it takes time. I do think MK1 would be good if they had just set the game in the same way MK9 did. Just retell the first or so Klassic games with different characters and motives. Once they started mentioned multiverses I knew the story was not worth paying attention to. They ended up erasing everything like I thought

Granted, the whole thing of time travel in Mortal Kombat is and has just been done to death, just let that die, but I did actually like the whole different universes thing that "COULD'VE" been a good replacement and actually have been a decent storyline, but it's like they just said "Fuck it, we're just gonna clean up all and everything or rather take all the multiversal MK stuff and cram it all into a too loud, too long battle royal up a pyramid to stop the big bad(s) question mark?".
Kinda like how in one series of Gundam, they tried to take all the timelines and universal threads from each separate Gundam universe and franchise in that universe and just squish them into one universal timeline so that everything would be canon that they called the "Correct Century". It.. didn't work out.

Besides that, Kuai Liang and Harumi ending up together is a problem that comes from the writing losing all of its subtlety.

While I am looking forward to where this new era with Mortal Kombat 1 onwards will go, I also think this Hourglass and alternate timelines stuff needs to go. I enjoyed MK1's story and "most" of the new ideas with the characters, but the series' lore and consistency are all over the dang place. MK1's story goes pretty smoothly but then goes off the rails by the last 3 or so chapters. The aforementioned McGuffins takes away the impact and any uniqueness from Liu Kang's efforts. Like, why make such a big deal about it when there are other realities/timelines with infinite possibilities?
They're just not needed and the idea of Realms did that far better. In fact, the Hourglass(es) and timelines nonsense ruins that too. At least one thing I liked that MK1 started is that once a Titan is killed, such as Kronika, it is permanent. As well as if Hourglass Keepers also perish, their entire timeline goes with them.
Sounds like good potential in future media to slowly get rid of all said McMuffins and the poorly executed Titans idea. 🙄

A huge multiverse equates to a ton of dlc and micro-transactions covered in the the current zeitgeist flavor of last month. The game feels like it was conceptualized around the time Dr. Strange 2 and The Flash were out or on the way. Multiverse was the hottest new trope but I don't think in 2023/2024 that it hits the same. Just feels boring now.

So a few things. One, I don't know why they even decided to go in the direction they went in for MK11. MKX was massively popular and well loved and had a cool setup for the Dark Raiden villain and Lui Kang and Kitana. They didn't have to jump the shark by introducing time gods and that level of power into the mix. They didn't have to set up MK11 to lead to a natural reboot. Why reboot a second time in just a few games? I can never really understand that choice. MK11 was polarizing to fans due to gameplay changes and character stuff, but when they developing that game and likely developing Aftermath right after finishing MK11, they had no idea the game would be received how it was, so none of that factored into the creative choice to do another timeline reboot.
But anyway, even if it seemed like this was not the best route to take, i have no problems giving another new era it's chance and I was very opened minded to anything they wanted to do. But after playing the game, which I do really enjoy playing, I had mixed feelings on a lot of it. Idk, it felt really rushed. I was hoping this new reboot would allow for a less astronomical, time god level of stakes to focus more on this fighting tournament between realms. But it went from 0 to a billion in no time. And now we are at even larger levels of power than Kronika. Now we are in the multidimensional God King territory, levels so powerful that nothing even matters because it's so beyond the pale. And now we are in the realm where the story sort of leads to another reboot because what are Earthrealm threats when you have whole multiverses colliding now? But then again that was the point, the dlc live service aspects are central to WB Games revenue stream so the story finds a way to justify it. It's the same reason Suicide Squad is structured the way it is, a multiverse being introduced equates to unlimited dlc.
As for the characters, idk, it felt like piss or get off the toilet. Why go through the trouble of re-imagining the whole universe and all the characters if they just end up being the same? Johnny Cage is still the same Johnny Cage, Kenshi is a blind swordsman with magical powers. I was interested in seeing human Raiden, but he has 0 personality. Things are different but still the same in an unsatisfying way. Also the game feels like an apology at times, like Sindel's whole story is basically a plea for forgiveness for changing her so much in MK11. It wants to be everything to all fans while also being a vehicle for dlc but it does not have that much bandwidth, not sure if that makes any sense. Story wise, I have no idea where they go from here. The game is still a huge financial hit and I am sure that it generates lots of money through dlc. Anyone who even catches this video in their TH-cam algorithm, cares far, far more than the vast majority of players. So they will feel justified in any direction they go in.
Last thing and this is a super nitpick, but the game has gotten a little fantastical, or bright I should say. MK1 is a gorgeous game, absolutely beautiful, and yeah the series always has fantasy elements in it. But it was darker, more dark martial arts tournament and less beautiful vistas. Again that's really not a major complaint though

I feel when it comes to Mortal Kombat 1 the story i find it enjoyable in most parts. And others not so much. I really like that Ashrah, Mileena, Baraka, Reptile and Li Mei are getting some shine which is good. Even tho i wasn't the biggest fan of Raiden. I find human Raiden interesting. I like to see where they go with his story. I like that we got to see Kenshi before he losses his eyes. The Tarkat disease is story i like to see further explain in the story. Seeing Sindel back on the good side is good as well.
The issue i have with this timeline is that it needs to switch things up instead of story majority good guy chapters.. Beside Sub-Zero and Shang Tsung. Other characters, especially villains like General Shao, Reiko, Havik, Rain, Nitara, and Quan Chi, need a chapter because if they don't get one, what's the point of having these characters. I also felt Smoke should've gotten a chapter since the last time he had one was in Mortal Kombat 2011.
I don't mind changes like if you're going to have Kuai Liang be Scorpion, that's fine. If you're going to give him a love interest, that's fine as well. Just don't give him another man wife. How about creating a new female character. So, this version of Scorpion can be different than the original and give them a story. I understand Hanzo has been through much. I would rather his character died peaceful with his wife Harumi as the two created the Shirai Ryu and the two played a role in helping the Great Kung Lao and many other characters like Fujin, Nightwolf, Sub-Zero (Bi Han and Kuai Liang great grandfather) maintain peace in Earthrealm in this timeline during the past. Or I would accept Hanzo as an Elder God in this timeline if they still exist.
The problem with Mortal Kombat is the muti verse stuff. It was fine in Mortal Kombat 11. But it should've gone back to it, roots defending realms, etc.

I know it's at the fault of the character chapter system, but the storymode and flaws in characterizations for me started to crack way before the multiverse plot came in full effect.
As much as they did improve on many underutilized characters. I still feel that characters like Reptile, Baraka, Ashrah, Ermac, and more are severely underdeveloped. In those 3 chapters, they're given cheap sympathy background stories and a dreadfully long exposition dump by each character.
If it's not rushed through, it's a long drawn out cutscene or people standing around talking. It's so bad. It's weird how, in 3 chapters dedicated to other characters, Johnny and Kenshi are given more development and care towards.
Dont even get me started on how the rushed plot humiliates Sub Zero, butchers a nonexisting Havok, waste Rain, Conned the Kahn, and so much more.
All because they wanted to rush into the moronic multiverse plot to push for a reason to make costumes for microtransactions. It was going so fucking well too. The first few chapters were genuinely amazing storytelling.

It was a very simple formula really. MKX would have been an updated MK4 through MK6, introducing the Kombat Kids as young characters, maybe 6-12(ish). Then MK11 could have had that time jump of the Kombat kids being the focus of the story leading to Armageddon…. Then, if you’re adamant about the reboot, keeping it all in one continuity introduce Kronica…..

Watching the situation, I think that the series creator, Ed Boon, have less rights to the franchise every new game.
MK is now a product of WB, not Ed Boon’s. They use Ed as scapegoat, like “yes, all this crap was approved by HIM”
The first reboot was a revival of the franchise, because everyone knew MK because of first three games. Yeah, MK didn’t die thanks to Deadly Alliance success, but the games after first trilogy are less known.
Yeah, MK 2011 was like MK 3 we played when we were kids. MKX continued the story set in MK 2011, and all this story was different from the original one, but had some important details. Actually, MKX finally made Shinnok really cool final boss.
What the problem was creating MK 11 with revenants Lui Kang and Kitana as sub bosses and Raiden as final boss? That would be a wonderful idea: main protagonists of the series as MK 11’s main villains! Won’t be that kinda ironic, but also so awesome?
And now, I have only one question: is THAT story Ed Boon wanted to tell? Because it’s seems like he’s a mindless puppet of WB; a mascot like Mickey Mouse from Disney.
That’s no Ed Boon in Mortal Kombat series anymore.

Honestly, the biggest issue for identity with the series is constant referrals to different timelines. TLDR: The real identity crisis is that it now feels like no plot points or character identities will ever stick for more than one or two games and the story will not consistently move forward.
MK9 was done amazing in my opinion with a perfect balance of nostalgia and novelty, especially considering Armageddon and changes and company. New timeline done for the first time made sense and done perfectly well.
MK11 referencing other timelines and bringing for ourselves was a mixed bag just do it a plot holes and using that at the expense of more plot points from MKX. So kind of annoying but not terrible solely due to timeline references.
MK 1 *exasperated sigh* had every single thing possible pointing to setting up to a new error, which was perfectly fine when we were looking at going back in time and looking at a completely different time. A little annoying again to reset the timeline for a 2nd time again, but seem like it would have a big payoff. Then they took the payoff from us by showing us the modern day characters, and then did a captain falcon punch to the gut by unnecessarily referencing the multiple timelines YET AGAIN. The series identity is now focused on memories from the past or memories from alternate timelines, which I feel doesn’t work because that was not what the first nine entries in the series were about, it forces retcon, which is always a risky thing to begin with, but now we are doubling down on it, and on top of that, it prevents the story from going forward. Across all nine entries, the story was always moving forward instead of sidestepping or backtracking. Even in the first three original games where it was essentially the same villain or organization, the story and plot still moved forward.:
The real identity crisis is that it now feels like no plot points or character identities will ever stick for more than one or two games and the story will not consistently move forward, which is a damn shame given how much they have to work with even 30 years into the series.

I think my biggest issue with MK1story is they decided to go full multiverse. I understand the game was being written when multiverses were all the rage and new, but by the time it came out I was tired of them and didn’t want them in MK.
I was fine with just 1 other universe (Shang Tsungs where he defeated Kronika) bc it was built up in 11 and made sense. I didn’t like how there was a universe for every character as a titan. It felt like too much too fast. This should have been a small scale reboot dealing with Outworld politics and Shang manipulating things, and maybe the DLC reveals the other alternate Shang.
Oh and Invasions should have been a more open, real time 3D beat-em-up in these maps. They don’t have to be huge maps, and character didn’t even need to be that deep. Just an expanded version of MK11 krypt. Maybe some npcs that give quests like kill a certain enemy or fetch quests. The board game thing sucks. It can still be a stand in for the krypt and a loot grind, just more fun.
If it had that stuff plus the new gameplay it’d be one of the better MKs ever.

  • @umbrascitor2079
    @umbrascitor2079 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think the identity crisis comes down to a lack of commitment to change. Armageddon aborted the progress of the original timeline and seemed to promise a fresh slate for the next game. Instead of proceeding from the aftermath of Armageddon, they rebooted the timeline and promised to take the story we knew and mix things up. MKX kinda did this by following up MK 1-3 with MK4 as expected, but then threw a curveball with the New Generation twist... which would have been fine if they kept up the momentum of the timeline changes and new story direction. Instead, they rebooted _again_ to start with MK1 _again._ At this point it feels like there's no use trying to follow the story because we can't trust them to stick with a storyline longer than one or two games before they wipe out history and start over again. There are no stakes, the characters keep shifting personalities game to game, and it's hard to feel invested.
I suspect there must be some ethos within the creative team where there is a strong push to try new things -- which can be healthy -- but the problem is they're looking to completely reinvent the storyline (and the gameplay) at every single installment rather than letting things evolve in surprising directions organically. There is no consistency when every new game generates a completely new vision that disrupts everything that came before.

Fighting games as a genre is competitive by nature. The fundamental flaw of MK as a fighting game is its focus more on story rather than the actual fighting. And the added problem is that, its competitors in the market, like Street Fighter, Tekken, Guilty Gear are all dead serious in fine-tuning their game mechanics while MK is busy trying to make a 6 hr story mode.
Solution A: Fine tune the combo system, give mechanics more depth, no more guest chars, no more childish shock factor and for the love of God, no more sluggish animations.
Solution B: or... Continue your current path but just stop trying to be a fighting game. Heck, for what its worth, MK should rebrand itself as a single player action/adventure game and find more success (thats what it tries to do anyways right?)

I see your point and do agree that improving some gameplay elements is important but I don't think them focusing on story hurts it because that is one of the things that turns casuals into fans of the franchise and we have other examples of fighting games holding the story in high importance like Guilty Gear, Soul Caliber, King Of Fighters, and Tekken.
The competitive aspects of fighting games is important but the story is equally as important because the character designs, abilities, stages, and personalities are tied to the story and dynamics of the characters especially with additional elements like intros, outros, and special interactions through modes or gameplay.

I really like your perspective on this and I will say my Empress Sindel has greatly benefited from this new era. Kitana and Tanya have not, however just to name a few. I think they are a little misguided in the sense that they feel they need to outdo the plot of the previous game which is why Titans and the multiverses were introduced. I also feel like it needed to have a slightly more darker/sinister tone. I think Mileena should've come to power differently. We know she is at odds with Outworld's people who feel Kitana should rule. I also think she should've developed a fatherly affection for General Shao inheriting his prejudices of Earthrealmers and he supports her and Tanya also helps her. With her Tarkat affliction (being caused by Shang Tsung in secret) she rallies the Tarkatans to her side who have been mistreated under Sindel and other Outworlders and a civil war ensues breaking Sindel and Kitana's hearts. With Mileena and Shao committing treason Sindel has no choice but to name Kitana heir apparent. Mileena looks into the distance contemplating her choice and we see her despair cutting to a shot of Kitana doing the same, both sisters saddened and reminiscing about their close bond as sisters. But Kitana realizes her duty to Outworld, her empress, and the throne and Mileena realizes that she must reclaim her birthright. But it turns out the plot of pitting the sisters against each other was orchestrated by the Deadly Alliance (Shang in particular) who would use this chaos to weaken Outworld allowing them to finish the opposing sides off and assume control providing them with power and souls. Long story short they are defeated and the story is finished. I would add more details but in essence no timelines, no multiverses, no titans, just an old-fashioned conspiracy and interesting character conflicts and development.

Takeda for example is someone I looked at in the same light as a Nightwing, Gohan or a Mile Morales. His story only with his father & Red Dragon (who are equivalent to the court of owls) had potential. I just hope they don't turn him into a time warping superhero because this Multiverse wave has to END.

@@xavierhouston4650 That's probably because a lot of the MKX hate has died down since MK11. It's remembered a bit more fondly nowadays, but when it was the newest one, it was shunned the same way as 11 and 1.
Mostly, people hated the Kombat Kids (Cassie beating Shinnok was viewed about as negatively as Kitana beating Shao Kahn in 11 was) and were angry about Mileena (and to a lesser extent, Baraka) being killed off. It was also the point where people really started souring on the Special Forces faction and plotline.

Okay so, I'm gonna be 100% real throughout. Change, while not a bad thing, is a very risky move, and MK1 definitely proved it. I still love MK1's story, in fact it's still my favorite story mode after revisiting the previous games. There are great changes in this timeline, characters who were villains (Mileena, Baraka, Reptile etc.) actually be good guys (Btw, while I agree that it came out of nowhere, I still really like the Reptile and Ashrah pairing), being a Tarkatan via a disease, and others changes that I won't say because I don't want to make this comment too long. There are changes that I am okay with, like Raiden pretty much being this timeline's Liu Kang, and Kuai Liang being Scorpion, but I still prefer Liu Kang being Earthrealm's champion and I especially prefer Hanzo as Scorpion (and Kuai Liang as Sub-Zero) as Hanzo Hasashi Scorpion is still my all-time favorite character in gaming. I'm still trying to get used to Kuai Liang being Scorpion and not Hanzo. Don't get me wrong, Kuai Liang Scorpion is pretty cool, but for someone like me, who's favorite character in gaming is Hanzo Scorpion, I still get pretty upset from time to time, even when I equip the Hanzo skin from Invasions season 1, it still doesn't feel the same, especially when intro dialogs still refer to him as Kuai Liang even with that skin on. While I still play MK1, because I still genuinely think it's fun (though that may be because I'm a solo gamer and I don't play online, at least in fighting games), I still go back to previous games, mainly MK 2011 and MK11 just to play as characters I really like more, especially Scorpion in MK 2011.

Why don’t they stop trying to make this stuff into a movie we should be invested in and go back to the basics: A fighting game about a tournament with fatalities and a dude with a ponytail and four arms. More often than not, simple is good enough. Look at a game like Virtua Fighter: A simple fighting game that focused on mechanics and gameplay rather than storylines and DLC. The same can be said about Dead or Alive. These are simple fighting games that center around the gameplay instead of appeasing casual fans with Warner Brothers DLC characters and cheap combo systems.

Liu Kangs world as shown in the story, arcade endings and intro dialogues, has lots of stuff that were teased and mentioned but when you throw multiverse in the mix it's hard to make it grow and develop.

I honestly don't give a rat's ass what Mortal Kombat does anymore! Woker Brothers just literally killed the franchise with MK1, while it was on life support since the reboot! That was the first game that literally had Mortal Kombat lose its identity; MK11was kind of a return to form, Potomac field experiment is what literally broke the camel's back! What's even worse is that the Scillers here are no better!
If there's one thing that the DLC plot should do it's to literally destroy everything, restart time like Kronika did! Mortal Kombat is just a literal dead franchise without saving...

NRS has the same problem as many modern writers, they don't know how to elevate one character without it being at the expense of another. A problem made worse by their rush back to all the multiverse stuff rather than a whole game trying to establish this new timeline.

I agreed mostly with your last video on characters who have gotten a glow up in the new timeline.
The problem is that it’s a new timeline.
I thought Reptile could have used a face turn for a long while. Unfortunately the Reptile we got in MK1 wasn’t the same as the last timeline, let alone the OG.
Therefore his time with the good guys just didn’t hit the same as it would if he were still the original sad, lonely, Shao Kahn obsessed loser we’ve known since 1992.
