I'm sure you all know this, but even with the mask, the staff is an immensely devastating weapon. Now, I had always been taught the quarterstaff came to a hands length above your head but perhaps that changes from English to German staffs. While this staff doesn't have the same leverage as the English staff does that doesn't make it a less formidable a weapon. Even with the mask these staffs can and will concuss and may even fracture or break bones, so exercise control! Like I said this is more meant for the viewers not so much the Dreynschlag staff (pun intended)
Yeah, the staff is nasty. Unlike the longsword you cant spar hard with it, since a knock on the head (even with fencing mask or helmet), may cause serious insuries.
The "quarterstaff" terminus we use might be a bit misleading, since the english manuals, that you are refering to, always mention larger ones. In hindsight the title "staff according to PHM" would have been more appropriate. In German we called the weapon in this tutorial "Halbe Stange", so translated that would mean "half staff" ;)
I got concussed twice while learning quarterstaff and honestly haven't been quite the same since - took months to recover from the double concussion. Be careful y'all, have fun, be good partners!

@@SuppDiggyDawg The quarterstaff seems like it should be equally devastating and debilitating to the ribs and long limb bones. I have a lot of interest in primitive combat skills including the sling and simple throwing ability.

Interesting that the "ideal" staff length is so variant from one master to the other.
yeah, it differs a lot! From these shorter versions of the staff to the longer ones, that can be seen in various other fencing books. And by this it also changes the way you fence with it.
Everyone's got a preference, usually due to their surroundings, or even their height.
It's a good thing they aren't too expensive to make, even a nice one. With experience, each person can decide which length works best for them.
I train with a bo staff and I also prefer its height to be up to my mouth or nose. More manageable. A staff too long and I bump the ground or ceiling.
Why isn’t something like a slightly smaller staff used that could be wielded in one hand is that a different weapon or would it just be to inefficient

A weapon is effective in the hands of someone trained to use it as a weapon. Otherwise it's just a stick. Train for what might happen. Not for the peace you hope for.
Even an untrained person can really mess up another person with a stick using the tried and true baseball bat technique. Obviously a trained person is more effective but calling it “just a stick” is apt to make you underestimate someone you really shouldn’t.

It is sometimes a good thing to remember that there is no such thing as a "practice quarterstaff." There are only Weapons of different length and heft. Wear protection so that you will have a sparring partner that you can beat into submission more than once.

Interesting video, new to fighting with quarterstaff and doing research for my character in A Tabletop RPG, but none of the video has discussed tripping the opponent with the staff. Is this uncommon or not very useful in hand to hand combat?
I'm afraid I do not understand what you mean by "tripping your opponent". When it comes to getting your opponent to the ground, then we're wrestling with the weapon and that works very well.
This technique is also called "Bonk!" on the InterWebs.
Would any of these techniques work with a spear perhaps?

What's the difference between the European quarter staff fighting style and the Japanese bo staff fighting style?
Why is the hand located on the higher part of the staff holding it in a reverse grip? Wouldn't a regular grip be better for leverage and manoeuvrability?

Hi! The Netherlands is a good place to learn HEMA. There are some great clubs and good friends of ours. However, I do not know exactly who also teaches the short staff after Mair... I suggest you ask for example at Zwaard & Steen, Arto Fama or HVN Historisch Vrijvechten Nederland. Maybe someone can help you there.

Danke für dieses tolle Video! Sehr lehrreich. Mögt Ihr verraten wie schwer Eure Stöcke sind und welchen Durchmesser sie haben? Unsere sind 1,80 lang, haben einen Durchmesser von knapp 3 cm und wiegen in der leichten Kiefernholzausführung etwas über 800g.
Servus die Stangen sollten für PHM ungefähr 1,6m lang sein, 1,8 ist definitiv zu lange 3 cm ist gut. Und bitte unbedingt Buche, Weißbuch oder Esche verwenden und auf gar keinen Fall Kiefer, Fichte oder ähnliches. (Das kann tödlich enden)

Is it safe to say that for a left-handed person, the stance is simply mirrored? The staff would be gripped with the right hand at the rear and the left (dominant) hand at the front?
Yes, you can mirror to follow the instructions in the videos. But since the staff has two "equal" ends, it does not really matter that much whether you are left- oder right-handed.
What is the lightest material you could make a staff from and still be effective? Fiberglass maybe?

I don't know if you guys are still answering questions but here goes nothing! I live in a somewhat dangerous area where unarmed or knife muggings have been known to occur and am considering getting a quarterstaff for self-defence, as I do not have the funds or desire to acquire a fire arm and the carry of swords is illegal. Do you have any tips for quarterstaff vs. knife confrontations?
RUN or give them the money if possible! In a knive fight, it's a coin toss, regardless of your martial arts skills. Chances are you will get hurt, possibly life-threatening.
If there is no chance to prevent a fight, it's probably a good idea to keep the attacker at distance until you can run. However a quarterstaff in a modern day environment is probably not that applicable for every-day-life. I would check out modern day self defense styles, that focus on situations like this.
@@Dreynschlag Hmm, quarterstaffs might be more accessible than you think! I know at least two friends who live in the same area that have started taking quarterstaffs with them when they travel about at night, apparently it’s been relatively convenient.
So would these techniques be use with walking stick.
hmmm, the principles yes, however the style with a walking stick would be more sabre-like than this. Check out the art of "Bartitsu" on youtube...

Wenn ihr den Stock mit der rechten Hand auf diese Art greift ist Vorsicht geboten. Denn der richtige Abstand zum Gegner ist dabei sehr wichtig um sich nicht selbst am Handgelenk zu verletzen. Denn wenn man nur wenige Zentimeter zu weit vom Gegner entfernt steht und seinen Arm weiter strecken muss entsteht ein ungünstiger Winkel für das rechte Handgelenk. Dies verringert die Schlagwirkung und kann das Gelenk verletzten.
When it comes to fighting it’s generally better to keep up the pressure, continuing to attack while your opponent is attempting to recover from the blow you just dealt. Retreating gives him more time to recover and counter attack
I’m assuming there’s an immediate follow up or defensive uses(after all it’s a staff) to make it worthwhile

I got mine from a local martial arts supply store. Do a Google search in your area. If not, buy a wooden dowel at Home Depot and have them cut down to size. It’s a wooden stick after.

Hallo! Die einfache Antwort: Weil es in der Quelle, die wir hier interpretieren, so beschrieben und illustriert ist. Die interessante Frage: Warum ist das so? Ich vermute (!), weil die Halbe Stange von Paulus Hector Mair kürzer ist als die Stangen in vielen anderen Systemen. Darum kann man die beiden Enden der Stange auch wirklich komplett gleich einsetzen und das funktioniert mit diesem Griff sehr gut und schnell, wenn man sich erst daran gewöhnt hat.

I sure bet this basic attack would hurt to get hit by but the way the hands are gripped seems to restrict a lot of potential force. To me who knows near to nothing about hema it just seems an awkward grip.
It also feels awkward at the beginning ;) But once you recognize that in staff fighting both ends are used equally you will understand the reason for this grip. We will show this in further videos.

Yes that´s not english quaterstaff, it´s german. Nobody said that this is english quaterstaff. It is quaterstaff based on Paulus Hector Mair, you can read this in the video description.

I appreciate the effort but should really see how other martial arts use the staff. Pictures in books do not seem to be so helpful. Learn the basics first, then interprete the pictures.
