  • A collection of 64 finely crafted Roland JD-990 patches. Take the deep dive into the 990’s synthesis, hearing its classic history along with futuristic sound impressions.

    Superluminal represents a collection of Roland JD-990 patches that showcase my journey programming this awesome synth. From the cosmic interlude of the patch “Superluminal” to some seriously epic pads such as “Vista Grande”, the JD still has what it takes in 2020!
    Sometimes I have to remind myself that its existence pre-dates 1993, with the slider infested JD-800 from 1991 and the D-50 from 1987!
    I won’t pretend to be the first to praise this synthesizer, as I know I’m walking in the footsteps of great sound designers, but in my own way I hope to contribute to the JD’s legacy. The Roland JD-990 is a timeless classic with hidden depths to it even decades later.
    One of the true great digital synthesisers.

      Hi @Analog Flava. It often depends what sounds you're after. JV was a workhorse and obviously has more poly etc - it's great for atmospherics/pads. Check out Don Solaris for his amazing work on that.
      JD is more specialised IMO. If you're after punchy house stabs, analog type synths etc, the JD sounds sharper, fatter, silkier yada yada. With 2 FX blocks where each block can rearrange the FX chain you can make some really esoteric stuff. If I had to choose, JD would be my preference.

    Hi there! I did try the link for more, but it shows "page not found" . I am curious about "Anne Boleyn", the pad with phaser I think, in the beginning, at the background of that loop sequence. Hi Joao. I just checked the link and it should work. It may be that it's being cut off (I probably should use one of those URL shorteners..) www.soundsauca.com/sounds/superluminal
      The Anne Boleyn patch is ring mod and sample&hold lfo IIRC (it's been a while since I made this). Yes the sounds don't require any expansion boards. However they will only work on the JD-990, not JD-800.

    Absolutely amazing. It's one of my all-time favorite synths and a timeless jewel. This is definitely one of the very best (and only) soundsets I've heard, because it covers so much of modern EDM and dance. Incredible job! Roland Cloud should hire you when they eventually make the plugin haha!

    • @Soundsauca
      @Soundsauca  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey @GabeCastro. It's a wonderful synth for sure. I wanted to show that the JD isn't just a pad and ambient machine (although that is it's forte). The other side of it is the raw waveforms put through some punchy envelopes, dirty filters & FX. It's been a secret weapon of many late 90s early 00s techno/trance. There's more in there, but I tried to balance the set as a showcase rather than a genre specific bank.
      WRT doing Roland Cloud, I'd be happy to, although I think they have their sound dev team covered already :(!!

      @@Soundsauca Wanted to chime in again to say that I firstly love your website and how you have sound examples of literally ever patch! well done taking the time to do that!!
      I was in a very fortunate position to recently acquire some awesome 90's synths like the Novation Supernova, Waldorf Q and Roland V-Synth in order to make some late 90s early 00's dance music. Even though they all sounded amazing, what actually won the day were these JD990 samples which sounded fuller, cut through the mix, and had the 90s tone down to a T. Even though they are are all amazing synths in their own right, as are other synths like the Nords and Yamahas, the JD was the best in my opinion and I feel the only one you truly would need if nailing that 1990's tone was paramount. It's flexible and, backed up with today's very powerful soft-synths like u-he Diva or VPS Avenger, and you have some banging music!

    • @Soundsauca
      @Soundsauca  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @GabeCastro Thanks for your kind words on the site and patches! It's like this: There's a lot of stuff I probably shouldn't do like making really long demos, doing loads of graphics and tinkering around on my website etc. If I cut a few corners there, I might have more sounds out by now! But as you can see I'm rather small in the grand scheme of things and I kinda want to make my channel not just a place to get patches but as a repository of information. I've a long way to go on that front but you gotta start somewhere I guess! Recently I've added a load of info on the System-8 on my site: www.soundsauca.com/roland-system8-mysticism-soundbank So in the future I may talk about the synths I do sounds for...
      On the synths. I've a few of the synths you mention and as you say they all have individual qualities and still compliment modern plugins quite well. The JD is a favourite out of them all yes, as it yields a presence few synths can match.

    I always come back to this beautiful demo every now and then. I enjoyed the patches man.
    Something about the 990 made sound design and patch programming just click for me, where as soft synths always felt intimidating. Maybe it was the simplicity and lack of options. It helped me understand the core philosophy of what makes a good pad. Which also helped me arrange more lively and interesting tracks as well.
    I think it's for this reason that Bitwig has become my new favorite DAW with all it's modulations. It's perfect for ambient music.

    loving the jd990 but im hitting a snag. why when in performance mode is the parch very quiet? on more than one patch this has happened to me

    • @Soundsauca
      @Soundsauca  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Billy,
      Whilst the JD has a performance mode, these patches work best in patch mode. There's several reasons for this:
      - First and foremost is the polyphony limitations of the JD. 24 notes appears adequate until tones are layered (as in most of my sounds). This drops polyphony down to 12, 8 or even 6 at times!
      - The next is the FX architecture. In patch mode, all 8 effects are available to that single sound, hence the stellar effects processing possible on it. Pretty much all my sounds rely on these. In performance mode, FX Block A can be assigned to a single part, where as FX Block B can be used across parts. Some sounds are setup with mod wheel assignments to shift the FX balance between these adding nuance. In performance mode this would most likely mess up the timbre/levels.
      - A few sounds use oscillator sync, an esoteric function on such a synth. This can only be applied to a single part in a performance...
      - Midi timing/dsp load will suffer in performance mode. Years back I tried this and depending on the sounds you are playing, LFO/envelope shapes can be affected as the sound generator load increases. On factory sounds this isn't always noticeable but on newer sounds utilising all the synth functions it can happen a lot.

    Superb set Soundsauca. Do you use an editor to programme your JD ? and if so can it be used to load your set ? I'm a new JD-990 owner and am not sure which editor to use but I should use one as my data wheel feels quite worn :( Your set would be a great starting point. Thanks

    • @Soundsauca
      @Soundsauca  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Damond! With the sound set the vast majority were done on the front panel. I just preferred using it as it's often easier to make simultaneous changes over multiple oscillators that way. I used an ancient version of Sounddiver to arrange the bank in order and to tweak levels. Unfortunately it's no longer sold as it was (is) a great program.
      I see that patch base (coffeeshopped.com/patch-base/editor/roland/jd-990) has a nice editor, but I haven't used it. Alternatively you can use a sysex dumping tool to transmit the sounds which works well.
      With the data wheel, yes mine is very flimsy, but it still works fine so it may just be the resistance it was made with. Good luck with your JD and if you need any help, feel free to contact me here: www.soundsauca.com/contact

      @@jmproductions59 Hey man, one of the great things about the JD-990 and a lot of the Roland kit around this time (JV-2080, D-50, D70 etc.) is that internally they have a multi-tap power transformer. This means you can easily switch it from 100v to 110v, 220v or 240v by moving one wire from the transformer across to a different tap. Once you do this you don't need a step up or step down transformer. Just google "bando transformer jd-990" and you'll see what I'm talking about. If you do this check the service manual for the glass fuse amp rating as you may need to swap it out. If you're in the USA tho the 100v and 110v fuse rating should be the same.
      About sysex, yes. These are transferred to the JD-990 via MIDI, you should have both MIDI cables connected for the JD-990. The documentation that accompanies the patch set outlines how to do this with Midi-OX but that program is so much more than required. Check out the freeware 'Bome Software Send SX' application as it is extremely simple to use and is only a sysex tool without all the extras.
      Enjoy your JD-990!

      Oh sorry I misunderstood. Ah yes. Well the bank has a mix of sounds - some programmed a time ago. A handful from the 90’s. The older ones were all from the front panel. Newer patches were a mix of front panel and the obsolete sounddiver computer editor. It was also used as a librarian to assemble the banks (I have enough sounds to make more banks but had to be brutal about which were good etc). A computer editor is always useful for some settings but the front panel is surprisingly ergonomic once it’s understood.
