- Having spent the majority of her career in ethics and compliance, Roy elaborates on the importance of ethics, according to her an inherent and necessary component of business, yet one that is often overlooked. Citing numerous case studies, she emphasises that the means of obtaining financial gain ethically, should never be trivialised or overlooked.
Shefali Roy is the former Chief Compliance Of cer (Europe)
and Money Laundering Reporting Of cer for Stripe, a technol- ogy company based in San Francisco that facilitates payments online. Prior to Stripe, Shefali headed up Compliance, Business Conduct, and Risk across Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa for Apple, was the Chief Compliance and Ethics Of cer for Christie’s worldwide, and was responsible for private wealth com- pliance for Goldman Sachs across Europe. She has undergradu- ate quali cations in law, economics and nance and postgraduate quali cations in journalism and economic history, from RMIT, Oxford and the LSE respectively. She is currently undertaking
an EMBA from Oxford’s Said Business School. In 2016, Shefali was named on Innovate Finance’s Global Most Powerful Women in FinTech List. She sits on the Boards of Ada’s list - a women in technology network - and Photoworks - a photography collective.

I agree with you as well. A quick glance on the DOJ website will show how many financial indictments and when you look closely, many come down to ethics. A quick decision without much thought with the expectation of a quick financial return is now landing people 20-30 years. They better think well before they act.

while earning my MBA, part of the coursework we received from Harvard dealt with how to create companies overseas to avoid taxation & they justified this by saying it was good business practice & that this is what "every major corporation" does & that if your company ever gets as large as Google, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, etc, to negotiate a special deal with the IRS in addition to creating these other companies overseas where taxation is low to hold your profits

Great presentation, not the audience
It is definitely hard to make ethics interesting but ethics (and morality) is the basis for all productive human interactions. Of course in the short-term ethics seem malleable but what's the long-term prospectus?
Firstly to take the long road and to do things ethically is the first ingredient in the recipe for greatness. At best history will forget those who have acted unethically (unless they were morally and criminally noteworthy) but what's worse is that the 'everyday swindling' is doing nothing but destroying our humanity and therefore our civilization.
People will NOT interact effectively if they don't feel like they are generally being delt with in a fair manner. So by the basic swindling that infects all of our social institutions we are limiting the very essence of human endeavor and possibility. And in this we are destroying our ecosystem...the provider of Life for us all.
Here's the real cost: taking time to do things right is sustainable for both humans and the natural systems that are imperative for continued productive existence; taking the quick short route to profits undermines both the souls of those who do it and life on our planet.
That's the plain truth!
Just because humans have acted historically without ethical resolve is NO reason why we shouldn't do things right and sustainably today. The difference is a hellish or a heavenly existence (for all) on this wondrous planet that we live on.

Promoting an ethical culture in an organization is important for fostering an environment of trust, integrity, and responsibility. Here are some ways to promote ethical culture in an organization:
Develop a code of conduct: Establish a written code of conduct that outlines the values, principles, and ethical standards that employees are expected to uphold. The code should be communicated to all employees, and training should be provided on its contents.
Lead by example: The leaders of the organization should model ethical behavior and hold themselves accountable for their actions. They should make ethical decisions that align with the values and principles of the organization.
Encourage open communication: Encourage employees to speak up if they observe unethical behavior. Create an environment where employees feel safe and supported when reporting ethical concerns.

Yes, and it is our job to think about buying cheap products too. Everything we do has consequences.
While there is no legal requirement for schools and universities to teach the code of business conduct and ethics, it can be highly beneficial for students to learn about these topics as part of their education.
Learning about business ethics can help students develop a better understanding of the principles that guide ethical behavior in the workplace. This can be useful not only in business-related careers, but in any profession where ethical decision-making is important.

To do or not to do? To tell or not to tell? Dilemma’s from cradle to grave....but one things for sure. We all know whether what decision we came to was right or wrong. Whether the right decision we took at the time was actually wrong. Was unethical. Because human existence has always been skewed in that direction.....unfortunately. Nicely explained Shefali....

But, the video does describe amazingly well, ethical decision making in our world.
It’s too bad un-ethical business practice is so embedded. Corporatism and capitalism is killing democracy. (From agenda based well funded lobbying and think tanks to the head of the EPA consisting of a person affiliated with oil execs)
Let’s do our part, to be ethical, from choose ethical products as consumers, to choosing ethical elected officials.

Instead of blaming audiences.. please show some ethics while writing such comments .. they had long day and must be tired at that point . Think other way everyone. Ethics should be brought earlier in sessions .
Ethics is common sense morality.
"common sense" is a grouping of biases and assumptions that you develop in childhood. What is "common" to you, is not common to someone that grows up differently than you.
She has an ethical outlook and probably will have many jobs, because the company's she will work for will want to bury something sooner or later, or get rid of the the compliance officer who will tell the truth....
