Sam Heughan is one very fine specimen of a man. God certainly broke the mold after him. I find him to be very Scottish enough! He does his role proud, to say the every least. After watching Seasons 1-4, I couldn't imagine anyone playing the part of Jaime better.

My only shock at first, which I'm now over, was his hair color. The books are very detailed in his appearance and they're always mentioning his flaming red hair especially in the 2nd and third books where he's known as "Red Jamie" and has to hide his hair. But besides that small detail I believe the creative team behind the Outlander series is doing a great job and Sam really fits the bill. Props to everyone involved!

They are not just Americans. It is an international fan base and so that includes many people. It may not even be American fans being the critical ones

It happens a lot when you start to hang around with people with different accents, my Australian friend came to the U.S about 7 years ago and has completely lost her accent. It sometimes happens to me too whenever I go to the UK, if I stay there long enough some of my pronunciation of certain words sound british automatically. Look at Cat, she's Irish but has been living in los Angeles for the past few years which is why she has a halfway Irish and American accent. I guess it all depends on your environment and all the people you surround yourself with. You pick things up eventually and learn to adapt, it's human nature.

Being from Edinburgh myself I can tell you he sounds like that most likely because he was privately educated for a while and went to the Royal Conservatoire where they will more than likely encouraged him to sound more English (they don't much like Scots accents in the film/tv industry). It's kind of a shame he has felt the need to change his accent like that.
that "all" at 1:43 was very much the English pronunciation. Never heard it pronounced like that in Scotland in my life from a Scot (unless it was a tory trying to pretend they were English to appear a higher class).
I have oodles of Scottish relatives and met some. When they talking sometimes they are a little hard to understand. He obviously does a lot of interviews so he is making sure people understand what he is saying I'm assuming.
Julienne The character is from the Highlands which is a very thick accent whereas he sounds more like he's from the borders which is a softer, more Anglicised sound. Still 100% Scottish, just a different dialect (much like Brooklyn American is very different from a Texas American accent) x

I have been reading the books since I picked up a copy of Cross Stitch in 1994 thinking the mystery involved some embroidery. Took me a few chapters to get into it, but then I got hooked. I do embroidery, sewing and bobbin lace making; in fact, most needle crafts. I'm partial to long hair in general too, mine is waist length. Hope to see Claire with long hair in future episodes, that is how I visualised her, in the 1700's. she would have grown her hair. Yes, Sam's hair does look a great red when it catch the light.

Just like Thewinnipegredhead, I imagined Jamie to be more of a red head. I also see him as having much longer hair, almost to the waist. Hope he becomes a longer haired Jamie later in the series. His looks have grown on me, but I find Claire too thin.

I do, however, agree that Caitriona does not have the body type that I picture Claire to have /especially/ with how much Jamie comments on her bum and hips in the book. lol. I have been reading the books since I picked up a copy of Cross Stitch in 1994 thinking the mystery involved some embroidery. Took me a few chapters to get into it, but then I got hooked.
I do embroidery, sewing and bobbin lace making; in fact, most needle crafts.
I'm partial to long hair in general too, mine is waist length. Hope to see Claire with long hair in future episodes, that is how I visualised her, in the 1700's. she would have grown her hair.

Ariadne Rimbaud2 You're right with the monastery, his hair was shaved off in the back because he was hit over the head and he just came back to Scotland. He often runs his fingers through his hair und it stands up in spikes! And I don't mind her lacking bum and hips but she is much shorter in the books, and I'd love to see a more petite Claire to this big and burly Scotsman *sigh*

I can assure you Sam is genuine. Young Scottish accents are easily changed. Firstly to Nordic tongues. German, Norwegian. then obviously, for acting...the Oxford English. Worst for Scottish is French!
