- This is a twin-engine, air-cooled, 1971 Volkswagon Squareback gasser dubbed “two Cool” built by Ron Howe.
Power comes from two Volkswagen air cooled 2.3 liter flat four engines with empi carburetors and their own independent oil cooling systems, bolted together at the crankshaft through a flex plate, and together produce over 350 horsepower.
The two engines are hard mounted to the chassis and paired with a tremec 5 -speed manual transmission and Ford 9 inch rear end with a detroit locker, sending power to the rear 18 inch tires.

As a VW lover, respect to this guy and his sons for putting together such a cool machine.
They did great!
Man the way that thing sounds I would swear it's a V8 just hearing the idle
…well a flat 8 anyhow!😂
It's interesting how the flat layout and being aircooled made little difference to the beautiful sound of an 8 cylinder engine. 😅
Because traditional american V8 is a simple two V4, or angled boxer V4, bolted together
@victortaveira8271 the idea of a v4 to us Americans is strange. It's a very rare layout that is only seen in a few motorcycle and industrial engines here stateside.
@bbracing3925 that's because a v4 are shit engines
A front motored VW Squareback Gasser with a flat eight motor?
The mind boggles.
That's awesome.
Too/two cool.
Right? They nailed the name
Flat-8 just sounds so exotic
Old school here, This cat deserves mad props, Absolutely astounding.
Yeah it’s incredible!
That is way more original than a small block. Kudos!
Indeed! And to think he considered putting in a 454...Killer choice to go this route!
What a clean build!
Yeah its a great build!
This guy is obviously a genius and awesome creator, bravo.
Cant get enough of this thing since i saw it a few years ago.
This guy has one of the most colorful automotive imaginations ive ever seen. What a beautiful expression.
I cant even dream up anything close to this in ,well, my wildest dreams!
12:38 cool idea.
I've been known to glue a grille emblem from a mk1 into the rear axle beam hole on said vehicles.
Just gotta snag an extra one to do both sides ✌️
Its one thing to dream up something like this.... but to actually do it?! Respect.
The most genius aspect of this car is hinted at in its sound. Ron has phased the two engines crankshafts by 90 degrees to end up with almost exactly a "Big block" v8 firing order/sound. He could have just connected them in series to have same cylinders fire together in each engine which would make it sound no different to just one engine. The Scat engine components probably permit the V8-type firing order as the original VW cranks would probably be prone to breakages with the torsional excursions of the long combined crankshaft.
Thanks so much for explaining!! I was about to say: Crossplane sound for sure!! Bitchin cool sound!
I don’t know what’s more amazing!? Ron or the car!? Both are badass! 👍🏻 Good stuff!
rons voice can also be used to strip paint
@@krusher74 LMFAO 😂
In this day and age of anybody just signing a check and getting crate 850HP, these are the builds we should be doing. Do a cool, interesting build with unique engines and don't worry about peak horsepower
Not everyone is a genius
Really freaking awesome! What a nostalgic look.
Yeah it checks all of the boxes for cool factor!
That Volkswagen is totally unique it sounds awesome
first time i have seen the work "unique" used correctly in a long time!
This is a fantastic build - totally off the wall and sounds fantastic!
Wow, just wow!
I agree!
My very first car was a 71 just like this one. Well, not JUST like this one. It was a 71 wagon, we’ll just leave it there.
No twin engine front swap? 😂
@@jalopy_jeff Lol. Only in my dreams man.
Mine was a 71 too.
"just like this one" is what people always say when they set upon me in my vw at a gas station, usually turn out they has a 70somthing and mine is a 54.
EXTREMELY unique project that makes other builders look silly. Karl from Japhands (Make it Kustom), Brent from Halfass Kustoms, Paul from FabRats and many others need to see what actually being CREATIVE is and start using something other than an LS engine in a build. Thumbs up Ron!
not really sure what to say at this time, ive seen probley a million or more car builds of anything anyone could think of on the internet,
this is the number one vehicle ive ever seen that has grabbed me this roughly, this vw is something of the work of god, this car is unfathomable,
the sound it makes from two flat 4 volkswagens in unison is something ive never heard in 39 years of life an mechanical knowledge, good show sir what a build.
I cant get enough of this thing! That flat 8 sounds crazy!!
The sound....I've seen multiple videos of this car. Love the engine and execution. So glad you included the driving footage. Sounds like a dragster. The exhaust, the way the engines are tied together and timed together. Amazing.
Tried to make the best video I could to share this thing properly!
This might actually be the coolest build I have ever seen and Ive seen a lot of crazy stuff... And that engine sound - 10 out of 10! ❤
Nice!
I think there is only 1 word to say :
Bravo Monsieur 👏👏🤘💪 !!
Insane build - oldschool design - Almost a gasser. Too cool could easily be the graphics on the doors and it would still be an understatement... A product of hard labour, a big love and a great sense of humor. The craftsmanship is excellent/masterclass.
hes driving it properly, we love to see it
BEST overall design yet!
Saw this vehicle back when it was in raw primer what a mind blowing build it fooled a lot of people as it rolled into Scottsdale good guys show
Ron told me about that! A great moment for sure to have people think it’s V8 swapped until the hood opens!
We had one of these, a 411 in the early 70's. Dad bought it as the family's 1st new car, from Don Corlett Imports in Louisville, Ky. I was 7 or 8 so I love this!❤
I've seen photos and short video clips of this car many times, thank you for interviewing the builder and giving a peek under the hood.
Absolutely! That’s what I’m hear for!
Don’t forget to check out Ron’s page and hit him up for fabrication work! Thanks for watching!
that sounds very chunky, I love it! , I would be happy with one of those motors!
Yeah a single motor would be a big bump in performance!
One of if not the best VW jobs l've seen
🧐🇬🇧
The Fittipaldi Brothers built a VW Beetle for competitions with two engines like this, but centrally/rear, which generated 400 hp in 1969! Awesome too
Google it: Fusca Fittipaldi
Unbelievable. I own four air cooled VW Vanagon Westphalias and do all my own work . This guy blows my mind .
My neighbor has just restored one of these Squarebacks but I can definitely say I've never seen 2 combined 2.3L engines and the 50/50 weight distribution is icing on the cake. 454? Nein! Better MPG!
Man, that guy did a great job on that car. Its freaking sweet.
I agree!!
I knew a guy that had a built flat four in the front of a Datsun pick up. It worked great and was his daily driver.
Oh that’s rad!
God damn thats the coolest car I’ve ever seen. Im not a big hot roder or gasser guy but damn i want that thing so bad.
Fantastic engeneering,he's a genious, amazing project!Greetings from Brazil, the land where the beetles are legends, and they are called "Fuscas"by the brazilians.Brilliant work!
Don't forget that the Fittipaldi brothers built a Beetle for competitions with two engines like this, but central/rear, which generated 400 hp in 1969!
Keeping the same engine manufacturer as the rest of the car is way better than just stuffing an LS into everything.
Love the home brewed engineering of this!
Awesome build, love the vintage paint scheme, we use to apply the panel, lace work to our motorcycles back in the day, the sound takes me back to the days of Island Dragway, NJ...an excellent balance of old-school & new mechanics, lots of planning, incredible vehicle! 🤯
On second thought, all it needs is some wheely-bars! Lol! ✌️👍🙃🤠

I'll say it again, those engines sound amazing. My mind is blown on how that came out
Right?
this thing be wild, love the sound of 2 flat 4 air coolers combined
Absolutely unique and cool.👍
it sure is!
I saw a similar setup with 2 vw engines at the Bugorama in Phoenix 2 years ago. Very nice workmanship!
Love the sound of that engine, it’s got a nice rumble….
I can't stop looking at that hat.
Looks like the Flying Nun's brother.
Helluva hat, boss..
I’m confused as to how a guy who builds such an amazing car can think that hat is cool.
It looks tough, sounds tough & is tough, I love it!!
Great job. Great information, great interview, great footage....like I said, I've seen multiple videos of this car, gotta say, this video is the best I've seen
Much appreciated!
Wow what a cool build, love Volkswagen's, never seen a twin setup before and that sound is incredible, just love it and well done 👍
Damn, what a cool, unique ride!
Absolutely! happy he went the route he did!
fantastic job !!!!!!!!!!! ,anyone can build yet another bolt on clone ,dare to be differant !!!!! love it
This car's one of many reasons I thank God for hearing and seeing. It looks and sounds great 😅
What a wonderful "flat 8", amazing project. Greetings from Brazil.
This made my day seeing this absolutely gorgeous unique. Unique cars are my passion. He's got great taste
thatis amazing. I have a 90 degree firing difference in my head with various firing order options. Very cool sound.
That was a fun! Great interview btw. Very easy to watch.
Absolutely beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Great job. Great taste.❤❤❤❤
That is impressive.
It sure is!
This has to be the most unbelievable cars ive ever seen, crazy cool, a must see for all
Super cool. Sounds great. That rear crank probably twists quite a lot. :)
Absolutely beautiful machine.
What a beautiful car totally amazing piece of art work.❤
Ron definitely nailed it!
Wow! Awesome! Did not sound like a VW at all! Fast as well!
Sounds like a V8 and it moves!
Beautiful Craftsmanship. 🫡👍🏻
That is very Cool 😎 👌 I love the old school set up and paint .I dig the front wheels
Impressive. There is a lot of creativity on it. 🤩🤩
Like this guy....keeping it all Vdub is cool. I'm with him...not every vehicle needs a bowtie...Nice ride Bro...I like it
I had 1970 square back in green. Bought in 1972. One of my favorite cars.
Since you found the most amazing VW in the world I'll give you a thumbs up! I so thought it was something completely different when it arrived on screen at the start!
That hat alone is Win!
Drove a 66 for 25 years. Went through the So. Cal vw club days in Orange County. Nice to see yours!
Oh very nice!
By all rights, you should be looking at a mid 10 second 1/4-mile car here. Nice!
Love the build.... nearly as much as I love the HAT!!
Stunningly Superb paint job; first class work complements well built aesthetic. Great work.
2332 was my dad's go to na bracket engine. would run 12.00's all day long. That's a killer setup. Would love to have myself a squareback.
That's a badass gasser!
WOW!!! Such a wickedly cool machine.
I was a little bit disappointed to learn that he didn’t make any part of this car with his feet.
The note of that flat eight gives me goodebumps all over. What a beautiful machine.
Oh yeah
Had a 68 type 3.
Installed a 1600 with the dual carbs.
Ran great, with the rear engine and most weight on the rear.
Would glide over large pot holes.
Couldn’t beat it.
This is truely phenomenal!! I would try shorter/thicker intake runner tubes, locating the carbs lower and trying a length of ram-tune tubes to reach the equivalent height but this guy might've tried different thickness in those runner tubes and found sweet spot point. Man!,The frickn thing sounds awesome!! You don't come across great minds like this guy often. Originality, functionality and last, but not least, great taste in theme style!!!😘
Excellent build,man.Thanks for the video.
That’s what I’m here for!
Very cool! Nice clean build.
Amazing build
That thing is sick!!
100% 100% 100% FOR HOTWHEELS! TX.
Awesome ride man
Sounds great!
Beautiful Ride!!!
THIS IS AWSOME
Love the 4wd look.
Absolutely spectacular 👏👏👏
I use to hit the Pavillions often.
Would see some mind blowing stuff.
Old Trans Am series cars, GM Proving ground stuff, originals, just everything...
Best sounding car in the history of life
That engine reminds me of something that would've ran in Can-Am or Interserie with limited success
Very creative!
WELL DAMN!!!!! What a MONSTER!!!
this short road drive reminds me of this jimmy white's hemi many years ago.
I hope that’s a good thing
@@jalopy_jeff sure it is 😎
That square is super cool! 😎🤙🌺
