A friend of my daughter backed into her 92' manual Nissan Stanza when she was in high school 20 years ago. The insurance company gave us a check for $2500, for damage to the hood and grill. We used a bungee cord to keep the hood closed and used the money to buy our 3 teenage girls a second car/ a used Camry for them. We were going to need to get a second car for our girls anyway since the oldest one was leaving for college. The youngest ones didn't mind driving the damaged Stanza. My kids were pretty low maintenance.

Much respect to people driving well maintained and groomed old cars regardless of age and model. Beater is a state of mind. You can tell a lot about people by how presentable or lousy their car looks and runs. If you can't afford maintaining a car, either work harder or get a bike. Even when I was younger going to school and working at a Pizza Hut, no way was I rolling in a rinky-dink rust bucket. It was my first car, an old 2nd hand corolla, parts are cheap not replace what needed to be replaced and me and a friend did the paint, interior was well kept. Put on some nice aftermarket second hand eBay rims and had it lowered. It wasn't fast but it was always fresh, clean and reliable. It was efficient and got me to places on a cheap. A lot of DIY work, it started my education in cars. I took care of it so it took care of me, never let me down not even once.

I would visit her sometimes since I was little, and she loved daily driving it a lot!! Unfortunately she sadly passed away at 84 years old after she had a stroke this year. It also means that her Corolla ended up on sale after it had about 430k miles, and her daughter and one of her family members were planning on moving there, but didn't feel comfortable anymore. @David Mclay only 110,000 km on a 2008 boy that’s rare! I have a 2006 Matrix with that 1ZZ-FE Corolla engine, I’m in Canada and it has 246,000 kilometres and it’s 17 years old and it’s been flawless more me. The biggest expense with it has been tires. That’s it. It still has the original water pump, A/C compressor, alternator (battery is 3 years old tho), and even these original parts show no signs of slowing down yet. The interior & exterior are still nice and mint, particularly the interior, (tinted windows have helped that), I’ve had it for 3 1/2 years now and I plan on driving it for another 15 years and another 246,000 km these cars are so reliable. Mine is an auto.

Scotty, I have a funny story. My wife, before she was my wife, bought a 1985 Dodge Colt with a standard transmission because she couldn't afford the auto. She never drove standard before but took it home with minimal instruction. She lived in NYC! She drove it home! An added benefit was that none of her family borrowed it because it was standard. What a woman!

I learned to drive in a 60 Dodge Phoenix, 6-cylinder 3-on-the-tree, with Armstrong steering and Flintstone brakes. After mastering that, I could drive anything with wheels. I still enjoy driving a stick, they are more peppy than an automatic. My high school car was a 66 Chevelle with a 283 V-8 and a 4-speed!! Dented and rusty, but my buddies thought I was so cool having a "muscle car". Yeah, a whole 160 horsepower monster!!! Hahahaha!!!

on older cars if you just scrub your headlights real good with the window wiper at the gas stations, it will polish them over time and improve the light output if you have older bulbs. what i do is wash about half my windows and then scrub one headlight since the small dirt acts kind of like a polishing grit. then do the other half and the other headlight. keeps headlights looking brand new without that sun yellowing. careful of the paint around the headlights since it will damage it.
newer cars this is harder with their non flat healdight deigns.

My parents bought a new 06 Toyota Corolla (same generation) with the 5-speed manual, they used it to commute to LA for about 8 years racking up 195k miles, then sat in the driveway for long periods of time but occasionally still drove it, I turned 18 in 2016 and needed a car for college so my dad attempted to teach me manual while learning how to drive, and I learned and so the 2006 Toyota Corolla became my 1st car! It had 203k miles when given to me, I drove the car throughout my 4 years of university along with taking it on many many long drives and road trips and never left me stranded, I put 120k miles on it!!!! During my ownership though I needed to get a new clutch at 210k miles, alternator at 250k miles and starter at 275k miles but that’s it! Impressive for an over 200k mile car!!!!! At 320k miles though and 4 1/2 years of ownership I crashed it though unfortunately…but my parents definitely said that car lasted far far far longer then they ever imagined so definitely was worth their money when buying it back in 06 and lasting 14 years with 320k miles lol

2007 Corolla manual owner here. It was given to me by my sis and BIL, after they bought a Rav 4 for cash. First gear start out can be really quick, as the engine is peppy on startup. Just passed 300k miles. BTW, on that model, the odometer stops at 299, 999. You can use the trip meter to measure miles, or you can pay a couple hundred to re-do the odometer. OR, you can leave it as is. Either way, these are great cars.

We had a 2008 Corolla. Bought it at 30K and Sold it at 130K miles to a relative. All we ever did was regular maintenance, filled it up with the cheapest gasoline and drove it. It was a Tank. To date, the most reliable car we ever had period. We even sort of used it as a pick up truck. When we bought cement bags, lumber or pipes especially we would pop the trunk and put the stuff in and tie everything down and tie the trunk lid down. It surprised me that even on slopes and exceeded weight limits the vehicle just kept going. It was not even garage kept during the 100K miles we drove it. My relatives are still driving it. Her highschool son drives it like its a maniac but no trouble yet. Its got 200K miles now still going strong. The only thing they changed was a new set of tires and a new battery and its going like a clock.

I’ve driven a standard transmission from a 1953 Cambridge 218 flathead 3 on the tree (not fast but very dependable) up. My current vehicle is a 2004 Toyota Corolla 1.8L with automatic transmission. I’m not displeased at 290,000 miles & works as well as when I bought it. 31+ miles per gallon & in 9 years only replaced wheel hubs, tires & regularly serviced. Runs as good as the day I bought it. The only thing that’s gone bad is the clock & the the charcoal filter valve. I don’t mind gassing up slow & have no vehicle inspection here so I’ll keep driving it until the wheels fall off as I drive conservatively & it’s paid for. I plan to buy a Tacoma so I can occasionally haul things (as it also has a good reputation) to replace my 1994 F350 dually crew cab (7.3L diesel). Maybe I’ll get a Camry or a standard shift Miata but if the Corolla is still going I’ll keep it too. No sense not having a back up.

So I got an 07 Corolla sitting outside. A blue one too. Mine's an automatic though. the vehicle is easy to upgrade the interior which is what I did with mine. I put in an interior floor led strip kit, a dash cam, alexa auto, and an android auto multimedia reciever with a windshield phone holder. I was doordashing with it, I actually profit off the doordash gas reimbursement, the car gets 35 mpg at worst and 40 highway at best. That's a 13 gallon tank, that puts 500 miles in the tank. I drive 100 to 200 miles a day because the area I'm dashing in is rural. I get 1 dollar per mile which is around 31 dollars profit from doordash per gallon. If you have a high efficency car like the 07 corolla, you should doordash with it as a side hustle.

Granddaughter's Boyfriend blew up my engine on a 2002 5.9 dodge ram. I let it set for 6 months then decided to put a low mileage engine in it. Guys that did it did a great job but the mice had eaten the harness. That costs a fortune to chase down. Blew the computer then no bus on the harness. Finally found that the single bus wire was chewed in two at the cam sensor and ignition. Wound up costing an extra thousand for computer, wire harness, Froze right front caliper and a specialist to come chase wires. Do not let one sit. Oh yeah and it had a skim security. They were so glad when I drove it away.
