The German tech tree in War Thunder is filled to the brim with tank destroyers, but one of the funniest is the 8.8cm Flak or Flakbus. It's just a truck with a super overkill cannon, but it can do some work.

@@Stella-gm7bo No, the SdKfz 9 is a prewar design that was used to tow guns and as recovery vehicle for tanks (2500 were built). This 88 mm variant is from 1940. randommanchild112 basically made shit up.

@triko03 Let's not act like Germany doesn't have the best SPAA until top tier. Sure America has all these planes but you have to deal with backshots of 20/30mm the entire time.

I got a kill against a ZSU with the TO-55. It was pretty funny because I was flaming him from behind a hill so he couldn't do anything about it.

I got killed by flamethrower. Got smoked by TO55 (the premium Russian tank) when I was in ZDB (the Chinese AA).
There was a Panzer III variant with a flamethrower. Imagine how fun that would be at 2.3-3.0...

@@marshall1896 No, you don't. It's in tanker manuals that it is dangerous to do so and usually the breech is empty until combat and you should fire off the round if you want to switch the shell.
Modern tanks are probably different but back then yeah you don't do that.

Attempt number 40 at getting Spookston to play any tank with a dozer blade, the catch is, he has to dig in before engaging targets. Movement around the map is allowed, but he has to dig in again before reengaging.

Two wacky US TDs I wish were in the game are the T56 and T57 GMCs. Which are prototype tank destroyers produced in September of 1942, both were based on an M3A3 Stuart chassis and were armed with the same 76mm gun as the M10 and it uses the same mounting as the T55E1.
The T56 would later have a gun shield fitted to it, while the T57 was never fitted with one and used the same engine as the M3 Lee. Both were cancelled/abandoned in February of 1943.
Now these would be perfect, I'd play them.
These would be pretty cool. Hope they get added at some point although gaijin seems to be only focusing on top tier at the moment. Kind of unrelated but both of these tanks used to exist in wot the t57 was removed some years ago and the t56 is still in the game.
So basically, the Zis-30 but 🦅🦅 versions

Was playing the IS-3 and got Sands of Sinai. Spawned in the lower right spawn and an uptiered flakbus spawned in the top left spawn. We could see each other from just outside our spawn and started a battle between a thing that couldn't pen me from that distance and a tank that could annihilate it but I couldn't get the range right so it was the most useless fight ever

To make the HE-VT work you have to pre designate a range by range find while using the HE-VT shell and then shoot at the plane when it’s at or just before that pre designated distance.
The thing is this isn't HE-VT ammunition which has a proxi fuze, This is ammunition Distance/Time fuze HE-DF/HE-TF.

The biggest problem with this "Tank" is the fact you can't manually set the "time" fuze.
You have to use the rangefinder to set the fuse

But that is kinda accurate. They set the fuse once and the rounds get lobbed to the predetermined height (range), they wouldn't change it , and they didn't actually aim at a plane very often. Other flak batteries would be lobbing to different ranges, higher or lower, so the overall effect was a consistent "box" of flak bursts the planes had to fly through.
Imagine a number 2 on the gun trying to adjust the range of every shell to counter the movement of a plane traveling north of 200 mph, 10-20,000 feet up.... it would be slow, clunky and ineffective, just as it is in game now.
Quick reaction and adjusting of aim was done by the faster firing, smaller caliber flak guns
These early timed fuzes are like the flamethrowers and dozer blades, useful tool IRL, but in-game just a gimmick that's not really effective.

You should do the „One in the Chamber“ challenge using the (finnish) Charioteer Mk. VII: For every target, you only get one shot. If you get a kill, you can go on to the next target. If you only get a crit or do nothing, you have to consider your gun empty and move to a predetermined area (e.g. a cap) to get your next shot. Of course this would be easy with APHE or big HE, thats why I said you should use the Charioteer (I didn’t want to go to evil on you, and the 20 pdr is actually quite potent). But if you want, you can of course use any other solid shot (or heat for that matter, if it’s small caliber it still won’t always oneshot if aimed incorrectly) vehicle (or you can use solid shot instead of a vehicles APHE).

Ah wonderful, I have been requestimg this one for a while. Super goofy vehicle, the long chassis makes it almost useless in CQC while its exposed crew makes it an easy target in open fields. But it's still fun to one-tap pretty much any enemy vehicle.

I remember when this thing was first added because I stopped playing war thunder shortly after. It was a glass cannon for the br and at first German players had no idea that their ammo rack was in that box compartment so it was always easy to ammo rack them and this was a time before over pressure existed however it still worked for open tops and it was always a blast that knock one out with HE. From my memory it definitely got power crept because they added a lot more vehicles/nations when I returned.

The way that the timed fuse works is that you use the range finder to select a distance that you want the shell to explode. Then it explodes once it reaches that distance.

I played this for a brief time a few years ago and it was hands down some of the most fun I had have in my entire War Thunder career.
Flamethrower is the newest edition to the "spookston encounters a gameplay mechanic never previously mentioned or observed and talks about it nonchalantly" list. The other one that surprised me was the ability of some vehicles to manipulate the terrain like a bulldozer

I do remember playing the 8,8 cm one time a few years ago on the Maginot Line map. Hiding in the town, a PBY flew over and I just lobbed shell after shell. I finally had an APHE hit him in the wing and only got a "hit", felt good about that shot.

Attempt 25 Challenge: For high tier support a nations MBT with its respective APC/IFV counterpart (ie Abrams/Bradley, T90/BMP2M, etc.) Challenge is keeping the other player alive and supporting it without stealing kills (breaking barrels, tracking, repairing, etc) it being a random should help make it interesting.

I know you just played the T95, but I had a really silly idea. Try and uptier the T95 (or T28) to 10.0+ and try to get a kill with it, if you can get a kill go nuts and try killing more than one. Love your content, keep up the amazing work, hope your recovery is going well!

This is particularly fun with a few friends camping in obscure locations that are hard to see from the air, and then lobbing HEVTs at aircraft. Heavy bombers especially do not like flak clouds.

the HE-VT of this thing is actually just a plain old HE shell with a variable set fuze timer that detonates once it reached set time
First day of asking Spookston to play the T114. It’s a pretty interesting looking vehicle.
The Breda 90/53 plays very similarly to this, just with even less gun depression and an even taller vehicle... But surprisingly enough, it's actually really fun to make work. And best of it, it can get god modes quite easily.
I have played the flak bus more then any other vehicle in the game.
One year and 88 days of asking for the Foch. (I'm very pleased with the fact that the days thematically match the content of the video, since it's about the flak 88)
The way to use the flak rounds pre-the shot so you set the fuse time to whatever the distances and then you pray that when you fire that the enemy is within that range of distance
Too close, you missed the shot too far. The shot won’t hit anything.
It was used for shooting at bombers from way down below, so they would have radar range for you
And they do it in groups, so it is a battery of AA
And then they shall the sky

It’s not easy it’s a bit of At Pe-8 though
AA with delayed fuse HE (Frag) works by denying space, basically. AA battery, when seeing flying enemy formation, works on a firing solution by finding out a point in space enemy will be in a certain amount of time. Such space has a certain area and attitude. Then fuse is being set to explode after a certain time (concidering that the speed of the shell is known, that translates to a certain attitude). Then the battery saturates space around the point we found earlier with HE shells that explode when reaching near that point. And scince by the time shells reach that, enemy formation is already there planes are being battered by shrapnel mostly.
