- (May 15, 2021) Undefeated rising star Brandon “Heartbreaker” Figueroa scored a career-best victory and captured the WBC Super Bantamweight World Championship with a seventh-round knockout of two-division champion Luis Nery.
The fight between undefeated champions lived up to its billing with Figueroa (22-0-1, 17 KOs) implementing his smothering strategy early, forcing a firefight with Nery (31-1, 24 KOs) from the jump. Nery appeared to control much of the early action, owning edges in punches landed (209 to 177) and punch accuracy (34% to 27%) throughout the fight, according to CompuBox.
But it was the 24-year-old Figueroa’s persistence in coming forward that eventually began to wear on Nery. Better fourth and sixth rounds for Figueroa showed cracks in Nery’s armor and were a harbinger for what would come soon after.
In the seventh round, Figueroa appeared to hurt Nery early with a series of powerful hooks, as Nery switched from a strategy movement around the ring and began to look to hold. Continuing to press inside, Figueroa was eventually able to land the decisive punches in the form of a combination punctuated by a left hook to the body.
Nery had a delayed reaction to the power shot, but once he hit the canvas, he was unable to beat referee Thomas Taylor’s count, ending the fight 2:18 into the round.

Figueroa lost the unification to Fulton title because Figueroa's corner did not prepared him on face motion, hip motion, so he lost for decision. Figueroa relied on power punches which are not so powerful with guys who can box like Fulton who know how walk the ring, and got good diffence, and a decent boxing skill and know how to tight up in a moment of pressure. Figueroa is young and needs to improve his boxing skill, he got good resistance and iron chin but that is not enough to pull a victory.
That fight was very close. I think Figueroa won.

es verdad, no se cuidaban debidamente ninguno de los dos, peor el Neri que tenia la cabeza fija en el mismo lugar todo el tiempo y poco ponía las manos para protegerse, al menos Figueroa intentaba ponerla contra el pecho de Neri así le reducia el poder al no poder extender bien las manos. El boxeo es el arte de golpear y no ser golpeado.

Came over to check out Nery, since he's signed Inoue for a May fight. I don't see it going past the 4th unless Inoue wants it to. Inoue is going to get beat but not a 122. Not sure it'll happen at 126 either.

Watching these two boxers fight, it looks like they are doing a rehearsal for a comedy show. I don’t think Nery’s liver could be tolerable within 5 rounds with Naoya Inoue in the upcoming fight. It would be a very interesting fight to watch. Good luck both of you!
