Wayne's biggest smile ever seen on youtube at 5:33-5:34. He's like...Silvio isn't great tonight, he is unbelievable! Wow, I think we have another great lead trumpeter who has a fat sound in all registers! Bravo Mr. Barbara!!!
@selector111 Its not about "over a double C" at all, Its about time and phrasing within solos, Wayne has structure to his solos, creates a melody and a rhythm that goes well with it. No point in having a scream out without the basics. That's like having the icing on the cake with no cake in the first place!
Wow! My verdict: that Silvio guy got a more usable wide range but less ideas. Wayne got more finesse and ideas. Both great lead players. I am going to check out that Silvio guy again.
@ChickenTiko but i like icing... no i agree with you. Two trumpet players that epitomize soloing in a useable range are Wynton Marsalis for his ideas and Chris Botti for his sexy tone and melodies.
I go with Chickentico, Wayne puts more "finesse" in it. Squeaking out notes don't make you a good lead player. A good double A that Wayne can pull out and make you cry is way better than some squeaks. Wayne can amazing people even without going high. That's why he's one of the most recognized trumpet players in the world.
@tpt1111 ...no disrespect to Wayne, but he uses the same licks all the time in his improve, or at least a variation on the same licks. So i wouldn't call his improve in another league.

Even though Silvio have a fuller tone above double C I enjoy wayne's playing better, plus his tone is way cleaner, and I like Wayne's improv.

@jazzcrazy727875299 What are you basing this off of, do you go to all of his performances, or are you just going on what you have seen on youtube
@ChickenTiko I know, and Silvio does have some good basics some of him licks are really good, I meant in a physical aspect.
Mr. Bergeron played really music, the other were on a competition simply.
Jet Tone mouthpiece! LOL
