Sharpstar 61EDPH II vs Radian Review Part 2

  • There was originally a lot of talk about these two scopes even before the Radian Raptor (just Raptor now) version came out. The Sharpstar 61mm doublet had been out for, I think, two years before the Raptor. Perhaps I can clear up some misconceptions about the two in this video. This time I actually show some images from each and perhaps this will help you identify if you have a defective copy.
Special thanks to Bob at Naylor Observatory for letting me borrow his Radian copy so I could do this side by side comparison.
In this link you can download my STL for the lens shade extension for the either the Raptor or the Sharpstar. I would recommend using black filament to print this. Feel free to print this. Consider it my company, Desh Industries, contribution to the hobby.

Hi! Your video is heaven sent … just last night I took a Shot at the Rosette nebula using my 61EDPH Mk1. I found egg-shaped stars in just one corner, using a 1600 MM Pro. Now I now where to start looking ;) Your channel is full of hands-on tips. Keep up the good work.

Nice video as always. I have a question about the two cameras you used. Which two bodies were they, and which one do you think has better thermal properties and why?

I was using the Olympus Em1 Mk3 and the Em1x. I did a very detailed video about this subject here. Glad you found this interesting. th-cam.com/video/Z4lpLonSgHI/w-d-xo.html

@@TheNarrowbandChannel I just watched your other video. That was very interesting. I didn't realize the EM1X had additional cooling built in. Have you gotten anywhere on building that external cooler? I would really be interested in something like that.

I was sorta waiting for the OM1 so I could make it compatible with older and newer cameras. Fortunately its pretty close looking. So I should be able to make it multi camera compatible. Yes I am still working on it. Tuff project though.

@@TheNarrowbandChannel Undoubtedly difficult, or we would probably see some decent units like that on the market already. For those of us who don't shoot with dedicated astro cameras it could really be beneficial. You should do a Kickstarter. 😁

What part of the hobby? For capture cloud makers has some excellent stuff. For the stacking part I use ASTAP which is very powerful. I am still learning much about it even though I have used it now over a year.

you can get ED80 from skywatcher and get much better image then what these are offering , mine has 0 coma or anything and chroma is also very soft can be edited out and you would think its atriplet, the only way you can know its not is if you compare it directly with a triplet that has smaller stars .
Also i think on Sharpstar the Corrector is to blame , try without it .

    • @TheNarrowbandChannel
      @TheNarrowbandChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have the ED80 and am selling it. I think it is very overpriced. 900$ and you need another 340$ for the focal reducer and field flatter. There are lots of 80mm scopes out there for less. I did a review on it here. th-cam.com/video/k3ba7gXmi-M/w-d-xo.html

@@TheNarrowbandChannel Can not be that much , 700$ is where i am in Serbia with Customs and 20% Tax , , 82ED in Europe is 800$ , ED 80 is not sold any more .
I sold mine for 500$ and 200$ for the corrector , so the price of new without corrector .
900$ is a bit much of course , shouldn't be that much , there are better scopes for that money .
      Actually i like Vixen Fl55SS , thats about 1000$ , 55mm F5 but with Fluorite Glass .
      And its wide field .
Absolute Gem , it actually has Crystals in it not glass , Fluorite is a crystal its not glass and its Nitrogen Purged and sealed . .
So i wont be buying a scope if its not Fluorite any more , either that or Reflector for practically 0 Chroma .
Problem with Reflectors is that they are all big , you cant find 200-300mm Reflector that is quality made easily , you can but then it costs more then Vixen and Takahashi small refractors .
      So ...

Radian 61 is no longer listed on the OPT web store. I guess the 500 premium of an entry level triplet did not sell well, even with the over hyped bullshit out of Trevors mouth.

Sharpstar/Askar are the actual manufacturers and they ended production about 6months ago as of me writing this. They have already replaced it with the new ED61 mk 3 which now has dual ed elements. I have contemplated updating but might just go for the Askar 400 which is f3.9
