    guys, i think people that say "ugh its just a remaster" (some of my friends did), dont really realize that since its a 2021 game, it will support the steam workshop.. this is huge, because many amateur modders prefer steam workshop over moddb for the simplicity, plus the steam workshop makes small improvement mods really shine (like a small economy rework for some faction to make it historical a bit more)

    The thing I miss most about the old TW games was the fact that when you built a city it just got better. Why did practically every single strategy game get so obsessed with provinces and city's always having trade offs?
    "Sure sire you could build a port.... but it will mean you're going to have to tear up all our farms!"
    "Why?"
    "Because those are the rules!!"

    • @Peanutbuttsmuncher

    • @therat1117
      @therat1117 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      More interesting gameplay, basically. If the correct strategy is always 'build more stuff', then city building is an afk task (which it more or less was in Mediaeval 2 and Rome, esp. compared to the original Mediaeval Total War). All cities are more or less the same in Rome, which makes the strategy layer kind of boring once you've worked out the optimal building order. Mediaeval tried to spice this up by creating two different city types, but this really just meant you had to memorise two build orders. In Rome 2 and onwards you at least nominally have to think about what the actual best building to put in the individual settlement is based on what you want to do with it.
      As an example of how this was also really stupid - you can't fortify your settlements in Rome and Mediaeval 2 beyond what their settlement level would allow, for example, so your border regions were always more vulnerable than your core regions despite that logically you would want to focus fortifications on borders with tough enemies, which you could do in Mediaeval 1, and which was reintroduced in later Total War games.
      I did prefer the original Mediaeval system where certain buildings were locked based on what resources were available in the province, recruitment was based on building synergies (including the resource-locked ones!), and you could rush nearly any building tree but the main cost to you was the amount of time it would take to build the thing, so you had to consider very carefully what, where, and if you wanted to build at all. Empire/Napoleon /almost/ returned to this system but used cost gating instead, which I dislike, and which basically every Total War since has used, which reduces strategy in a different way, but to 'spam resource buildings for more money'. I think Troy was a step in the right direction on that front, but Troy also had a bit too much resource availability and more or less the same cost gating issue.

    • @chrisgibson8863
      @chrisgibson8863 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@therat1117 I get why strategy games shifted to trading off this for that with settlement development. Originally I thought it was a cool concept. Then every single game decided to do a version of it and now they all just seem like math class and their rules are all arbitrary. It's just to roadblock the player with an annoyance, it's not historically accurate whatsoever in most cases. In the time period of Rome some cities really could have all those buildings, and some of them did. They weren't given arbitrary game blockers for the sake of a challenge.
      I don't know it's just my preference. I think the concept has become pretentious and I would rather go back to a simpler time.

    • @therat1117
      @therat1117 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chrisgibson8863 I feel that. I feel like you should be able to build massive cities with all the buildings, but have a realistic balance of time and cost to this, and not the stupid squalor or public order sinks. The idea of increasing city size with development is good, but the idea and balance of it is too underdeveloped in Total War rn. I especially don't like gating individual building tree progress behind settlement level - that really is arbitrary.

    Wow, this game feels really innovative, notice how the units push and pull, dynamically moving between the battle, and how each unit feels like it's own entity. The collision system is also a massive improvement. The music is probably the best in the series so far, and I love how towns and diplomats are separate entities. Really feels like this game is shaping up to be a huge improvement over the past titles. Here's hoping they don't start simplifying Total War!

    Okay but whoever is behind the UI is a god:
    - more detailed buttons in the grand campaign map
    - simplified logos/textures and use of contrasting colours in battle
    Modern and tasteful update to everything while still staying mostly staying true to the original. Does this guy have a degree in this stuff? Straight up professional work. Bravo.

    • @gustavchambert7072
      @gustavchambert7072 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems the exact opposite to me. The old UI was incredibly simple, especially in the campaign map. You had everything you needed, in a simple and clean design, and nothing you did not need. This new design looks way more over-engineered, with more crowded panels, more buttons and panels for the sake of it (not saying that some additions are not useful, but most seem less than necessary).
      The same goes for the battle UI. It was really simple, easy to use and elegant in its simple design. The new design is modern, sure, but it misses what made the original good in my opinion.
      An excellent example is that they have zoomed the camera out substantially on the battle map, making it much more in line with newer games like R2 and Atilla. This might seem insignificant, but being close enough at maximum zoom to still be able to distinguish individual movement is a big deal for the feel and visceral impact of the game. The fact that you can see less of the battlefield also forces you to take a more active role, zooming around more and paying more attention, thus involving you more in the action. This is where a decenty large and easily accessible UI is important, all things in it should be very easy to access, all the time, because my focus is on the field, not the buttons.
      Im afraid I also dont find the uppdates very tasteful at all. On the campaign map the soft, subdued colours and mix of sharp and blurred lines with soft contrasts has been replaced by much sharper lines and much more garish colours, making the overall Impression and feel a far cry from the original. The effect is similar in the battles, with bright orange range-indicators with opaque lines (which incidentally also take away the need to pay attention to your units) as just one example. From the trees in the battle around 30min into the vid, they also have not been very thorough in making the game look good, focusing on certain parts only.
      Overall I dont see a tasteful uppdate, but a clumsy attempt to paste the look and feel of newer games onto the old, with very little respect for what it was, why it was that way and what made it great.

    Carthage did not really had a flag or symbol according to the historical notes, the closest they used wasthe image of goddess Tanit. The crescent is modernized version made with crescent moon which is NOT correct (having spoken with Tunisian historian professors AND browsing through archives of universities in Marrakesh and Cairo). Ottoman specialized professors in UK universities also say the same. The crescent is a modern interpretation, as islam came many centuries after Carthage's downfall and went into the sands of time.
