  • In this video, I ride and talk about the differences in a motorcycle and a scooter. The motorcycle is a 2020 Honda Rebel 500, and the scooter is a 2021 Gator 150E-3. I learned to ride the same model scooter before switching to my Rebel, although this particular one belongs to my ex.
Some things not mentioned in the video or only briefly mentioned:
The scooter comes with a lot of bells and whistles for the price: lots of storage, an alarm system, a kickstart option, and a key fob that can start the vehicle.
The Honda Rebel is much simpler, but the quality is great. It rides smoother, feels more stable on the road, handles turns almost as tight as the scooter, and has a digital dash with lots of info: Trip meter, odometer, gear indicator, and warning lights.
Cons of the scooter: Tops out at 55 or maybe 60 downhill...though you can't tell because the speedometer is inaccurate. When it says 70, you are probably going 55. The quality is a bit lower, so you have to check bolts frequently so that things don't fall off during rides: especially the clamps for the exhaust and the storage container on the back. The scooter sounds like a lawn mower or leaf blower, but I don't think of this as a con...I think it's funny.
Cons of the motorcycle: Shifting and focusing on throttle and clutch is distracting at first. The inline gears mean that you have to downshift through every lower gear when you go to a stop. There's basically no storage unless you want saddle bags...which don't come with this model. No bells and whistles, but I prefer the simplicity.
FAQ: Does a scooter prepare you for a motorcycle?
Yes and no...you can work on things like counter-steering and get used to handling a motorized vehicle, the idea of where the throttle is and basic components are in similar places. The advantage of not having to think about shifting while learning to maneuver on tight turns/U-turns can be very helpful.
It does not prepare you for shifting. It also has a much less sensitive throttle, so when you get onto a motorcycle, remember not to turn the throttle anywhere near as much when starting out.
I think it helped me to have the scooter experience so that I could focus just on the shifting/clutch/throttle without learning to maneuver the bike at the same time.
