the phrase you're looking for is "diegetic vs non-diegetic"--all but three numbers (emily, music, harmony) are diegetic; they're happening in the world of the story, whereas those three numbers are fantasies/memories
but this one makes sense since it is like he is singing the song to his mother, that way, we can "read" what the song says without seeing it. I haven't seen the show, but my siblings loved it
This scene is when Julie goes to Luke's parents house, to try to make things right between them again. Even though Luke is dead, his biggest regret was never making things right with his parents, especially his mom. Julie knows that Unsaid Emily is about his mom, and having lost her mom, knows that the song says what Luke couldn't say to his mom when he was alive. During the song you see the conflict between him and his mom over his love of music and the importance he gave to it and his band over anything else. Because to him, he isn't living unless he has music. Its and integral part of him. His mom disagrees and wants him to focus on something else with which he can make a living ( she thinks his dream is just that, a dream that won't amount to more) so he chooses music and his band with the other phantoms (Sunset Curve) over them. By the way they died in 1995.
The cut-outs & beanies are Charlie's personal style, used for his character Luke in the show The guy can play several instruments, sing, act, dance, co-wrote a song for the show, hike/surf/ski/snowboard/skate/play hockey and has a child-like demeanor Good, you finally like him 😃
Can we stop requesting this song from people who are going to react to the show please? This song is so important to the plot and really needs to be watched in context. I'll echo what others have said in that this show isn't a traditional 'musical' type show. There's four parts where they spontaneously break out into song that aren't performances - this song (which fits in context) two songs which are just Julie's imagination, and one song that the boys perform to cheer each other up.
i cried my eyes out when i watched this episode for the first time (ps: i watched the series at least 15 times i’m in love with it 😭😂) and this is so beautiful for real 🥺
i looove this song, and charlie (the actor that makes luke, the guy that is singing) kills this performance, the way he sings, the emotion in his voice, his acting soooo good, cried so much
the reason they’re phantoms are bc they’re dead yk what i mean so the sirens implicate the parents finding out he died without getting back on good terms
They don´t burst into song....it´s a stilistic choice because his mother reads the song he wrote for her after he ran away from home and before he died and he remembers writing and playing it in 1995! He is not really singing, it´s in his head I guess. Otherwise Julie would hear him and that would be weird :D
You took back everything you said about Luke just watching Unsaid Emily,if you watch the show you gonna fall in love with him😁. Kidding. But he's an amazing character.
This is like one of two songs that they break out into song for, the rest of them are like in a specific spot such as a performance! And this isn’t like an edited bit for TH-cam like this is all the scene from the show!
When you watch the show fully this scene hits so hard! I’m not even ashamed to say I bawled when I watched this scene and the song still makes me cry lol
my gran has always stood by don't go to bed on an argument because you never know what's gonna happen. this really portrays why. don't let your last words be something you will regret
The 3 of them passed away Luke, Alex and Reggie I won't tell you how but it's sad. Luke ran away so he wrote Unsaid Emily for his mom, Julie helps give her the song. Luke is singing it but I'm pretty sure only Julie might be able to hear him do it. Oh, that's why you shouldn't say bad things about the actors/characters, till you see and hear everything because Charlie's voice is epic. Stand Tall, Finally Free, Edge Of Great, Bright all great ones.
well, since you asked, my reaction to this song was SOBBING cause I watched it during the episode and when you get the full context.......... man..... T E A R S lol
This is him going back and reliving after his friend brings the songs to his parents. And you are going back and re-watching what happened back when he left in the day before he died and then a bit when he died
Unsaid Emily, I’ve got the music and perfect Harmony, are all performances done inside their head but they don’t break out in song for the most part. Every other performance is an actual performance and this one is more a flashback anyway. It’s funny that you mention glee though because glee has a mixture of planed performances and musical numbers.
This is the most emotional part of the series, for reasons others have already mentioned. You can definitely feel the raw emotion from just the video clip, but once you watch the show and get immersed in the story, it has a much greater punch to the gut. Despite this being marketed as a “kids” show, it really does delve into some deep topics like loss and grief and healthy friendships and boundaries, but it does so by walking a delicate balance between comedy and seriousness and makes it really meaningful to a universal audience. You should definitely watch the show and do reactions to it, whether on Patreon or here. As for next songs, I would suggest: 1. Now or Never (this is the song the original band Sunset Curve plays before they pass away) 2. Flying Solo 3. Finally Free 4. Perfect Harmony (another one that may seem like a “break out into song” moment, but is a dream sequence) 5. Stand Tall These are listed in the order they appear in the show (not including other songs), not my personal order of preference (but Now or Never is my favorite lol)
Another one that kinda adds to your understanding of the show is perfect harmony. It’s visually and musically pleasing, I love it.❤️ Maybe you can watch that next.
Yeah there were only a few songs where the characters just broke out into song, two of them were day dream sequences, which kept the story line realistic, and this one where he is singing to his mom, who has been mourning his death for the past 25 years. Definitely watch the show! This is one of the best shows in the history of shows, it’s freakin awesome! Oh and the scene where he disappears on his bike, he didn’t disappear because he was a ghost, his character was still alive at the time of that flashback scene. It represents the moment he disappeared from his parents lives. That was the last moment his parents saw him alive. The scene with the flashing lights represents the moment his parents were informed of his death. I assume it was police lights out their window, or the flashing lights may have represented his death being reported on the news. This song/montage is really important, to the show because it is the only scene in the movie that shows how tragic his untimely death was, and how traumatizing it was for his parents and how hard it was for him and his parents to be permanently separated, it also shows how young and vulnerable his character actually was. The show is very light hearted, except for this scene. But it added so much depths, character development, and humanity to the show. And the song is beautiful and makes everyone freakin cry their guts out. A lot of people have commented on how this song has actually helped them over come the death of loved ones in their own lives.
Kenny Ortega said there wasn't a dry eye on set filming this or in the studio when they were recording it. If you look at Owen (the drummer) in the garage you can see him swallowing really hard like he was fighting not to cry
I got into the show back In January. I was scrolling through netflix trying to find a show to watch. I saw jatp show up many times but I thought it was gonna be corny until I gave in and watched it. Finished it in 1 night so decided to watch it 10 more times
they don't break out into song they do it on stage but unsaid emily is a very sad song if you know the story and It creates effect on the person watching like its so sad because they can't see him he is dead and him singing that and them reading it breaks my heart and the scenes are in the show yes I cry everytime it means so much more when you watch the show
they don't break out singing. perfect harmony and i got the music were part of julie's fantasy/daydream so it wasn't happening irl. bright was to encourage julie so she can get back in the music program. and this song, i think was happening in his head, when julie gave emily his song to her. emily is luke's mom and he wrote it before he died.
This is him looking back at the song that was written for his mom before he died. Yes he’s a phantom but the same time in this short little clip here he’s not a phantom in that way if that makes sense
@@haleyrose8369 yea but I didn mean it like that I just meant where he was saying he doesn't like where they just burst into song and while those were her imagination it still counts in the category of bursting into song
They don't break out into song, only in this and one other song. And this song is about how luke ran away and died and never got to apoligize and say goodbye.
No it’s all in the show. Nothing is left out you’re watching it like it is in the show but at the same time you should watch that show to get the full understanding otherwise when people comment or whatever you don’t know what their meaning because you haven’t watched it.
Weird thing to say but this show it’s not a musical it’s like a show but with music bc most of the songs are real performances of the band the only one they break out into song are "unsaid Emily" and "I got the music" and u could say "perfect harmony" too
Lol I love how confused you were him and the boys died all together and they used to play there when Julie lives and when she played their song they got back there and she was confused, and then they asked her to be in the band and then they were in a bad together so yeah hope this helped a little lol x
Your reaction when you notice what was going on 😂, this is the most beautiful song of this show ❤ Please react to Now or Never next time, another song from this show that have a little bit of rock'n roll!🙃 (Stand Tall, Finally Free, The Other Side of Hollywood, WOW and Perfect Harmony are incredible songs too)
They don’t break out the only ones that weren’t performances other than unsaid Emily were I got the music, and perfect harmony, which were both in Julie’s head, and either way, they’re still amazing.
Actually people can’t see the phantoms but they can hear them, the only time they are seen when they sing with Julie tho, and they don’t break out into song because numbers like “perfect harmony” “I got the music” “This band is back” and “unsaid Emily” are either in there head or they can’t see them.
