i fell in love with the blue version :) was an instant buy! First saw the Japanese limited edition ones, sadly limited. but gladly they released these ones to easily get!
It actually looks kind of cool from a distance. There’s so many different variations of this watch already that I don’t see an issue with adding this dial variation into the mix. And so long as they don’t charge a premium, I say it’s all good.
The SKX is a relic of what Seiko used to be- solid, good quality innovative, well priced watches. These new 5's sum up what Seiko are today ( on their watches up to a grand) in my opinion
Can’t argue that you get a better Spec’d 5Kx I’m disappointed with the amount of variations there are . They are dive style watches now and that’s sad for such an icon that it was. It started me off on the journey!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR Indeed. I already had a Seiko 5 sport on my cart and then I learned that it is not a diver watch and only has 100m resistance. So I ended up discarding it and for a slightly lower price I got the Citizen Promaster Eco-Drive that will give me guarantee on my intended water sports this summer!
Denis! Always appreciate you stopping by! It has definitely been a journey! A quest for improving every time whilst maintaining the entertainment side is what I always strive for! The second it becomes forced I don’t know what I’d do!
These are very cool and best price ever. I don’t think you can get any better than this. I bought both of them for my collection. The watches really cool under the lights and sunlights ❤
I just bought an SPRJ45 for $220... It's the first Seiko that tickled me right to pull the trigger on one. It might be lazy, but it must be effective, because they reeled me in, lol.
Got a blue one during the black friday sale for 200£. I'm not complaining for the price and it's definitely a really fun watch that won't be to everyone's taste but at least it's not boring! Great review and new sub!
Great video! I'm looking at picking one of these up so it's nice to find a full review with lots of good video since I was undecided on the color I wanted. Definitely the turquoise!
Russ, Russ, Russ! It really shows what you think of these two when you constantly call the movement 4R35 while everybody can READ on the back that it's a 4R36. Not that us "older" SKX owners wouldn't know anyway. Swapping the movements was the most favourite mod. Talking about mods: If one isn't lazy and wants to do some serious watch building, all parts needed to build a watch close to these can be bought on Aliexpress for roughly €120,- or 105,- GBP.
Thanks for this review i clearly think on this product as i hesitated to buy or pass on it. I cancel my order now and buy different seiko 5 gmt maybe ssk series
My first watch that has begun my obsession was/is a seiko 7s26-0040 and I picked it up for £5 from a charity shop!.... After looking it up online and realising how lucky I got I then began researching watches and their engineering etc and have been enchanted ever since.... I'm hoping to get the seiko 5 Sports with orange dial next as that's a good bright work watch.
Honest as ever, yeah, Seiko tend to go the easy way sometimes, don't they? Your wife's first impressions always make me at least smile 😄, but most of the time crack up like no tomorrow 🤣.
"I only did one, but still..." 😂 Fantastic review - very much agree. Would love that beautiful dial on a non "dive-style" watch! But chunky can of tuna diver without a screw-down crown? C'moooon seiko!
Why didnt they just colormatch the caseback with the dial. Think that would have looked abit better and also liked they put in a little bit of effort into it =)
I LOVE my skx011j. I've been looking at these and the limited edition kosuke kawamura, but I can't get past everyone talking about the diminished quality and lack of specs. Kind of a bummer.
Alan! No snobbery at all my friend! These watches are for people starting the hobby imo that’s all, from the 3hrz movement, the dive style look. Solid watch that won’t let you down for sure
My daily wear is a smart professional Seiko 5 with the older Superman logo but the 5KX divers are an abomination and for the same money there are better dive options with Orient, Citizen, etc or even getting a proper SKX if you look on ebay for long enough to see one at a fair price.
I wish Seiko would quit crapping out lazy variation of the SKX007 version of the Sekio 5 and just give us the damn SKX013 Seiko 5 we've been asking for!
Excellent review as usual. I really like 70s-look watches, I'm more drawn to the brown one though (a lot of stuff was brown in the seventies). Your comment about the clouded dial is spot-on, what are Seiko thinking? Oh, and your side look to camera when you mentioned your wife's hieroglyphics comment - I had to pause the video as I was laughing so much. You're a natural in front of that camera, Russ. I'm going to recommend you to the BBC to replace Graham Norton.
Im tempted Russ matey, partly because Im a Seiko nut, partly because the see through thingy is cool. If its good enough for MRS MWC its good enough for me!
I've seen it in a boutique in Amsterdam a month ago; quite a nice watch, but it has two major flaws in my opinion: the case back which reminds me of the old plates from the 70's my grand mother used for dinner, and the case material which is strangely polished.
I remember those vereco smoked glass plates and tea sets from the 70s and you're spot on. The brown dial is like the amber ones. Watch would of looked way better without the dive bezel.
6:50 heya, just a correction here. Its a 4R36 movement, not a 4R35. 4R35 only has a date wheel while the 4R36 is a day date, they're also the basis for the NH35 and NH36 that microbrands buy on bulk from Seiko respectively.
I dig the dial, but the hollow end links, hardlex and jangly bracelet make me sad. Also, it needs to be more faithful to the original - that bezel is sloppy. I'd prefer a San Martin any day. Better bang for your buck and they do better finishing and listen to their customers. Pretty much the same movement.
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR It would still have those Seiko skimpy features, but it would be a better homage to the original. And an original watch that pretty deserves a faithful reimagining of it.
Looks very nice, I still really want an SKX but this might scratch that itch, and the price is attractive. As far as diving goes, might find myself a couple of millimetres underwater, so no screw down crown isn't really going to bother me :)
Hi I am thinking of buying a Christopher Ward C65 watch either the Sandhurst or the Cranwell series 2 watches. Have you had any experience with either of those watches? Great TH-cam channel, always entertaining.😊
Crude bracelet with hardscratch crystal and a dial they were too lazy to paint means any Homage brand will do it cheaper with sapphire in a few months and use the same movement.
Love this "fumé" look to the dial. I have a couple of "dive style" Seiko 5 watches and the movement is dead on! And, By the way, speaking of movement, you say it's a 4R35 ... it's actually a 4R36 i.e. Day and Date as opposed to only date ... just sayin' 😊 Thanks for the show my friend!
I agree, I think it is a bit lazy, if you are going to reference a vintage piece then at least do it some justice and make it some sort of chrono. Great video as always Russell 👌👍😊
Love it,especially the blue dial. Totally agree with you on all aspects, it's a quirky interesting watch with a price that matches its features. No screw down to me is the worst feature it doesn't have, but it's face is it's crown jewels... even though it doesn't have any (jewels?). Great fun review TMWC, all the best.
May I add one more argument in the lazy column? Christopher Ward has had a semi-transparent dial for a couple years now. This reminds me more of CW than of the Time Sonar. Goliath aping David, who would have thought.
Agree my friend but just remember who was doing it almost 50 years ago! And for the price and in house movement for well under £300. On paper it’s not a bad buy;)
Initially I thought you are just goofy with no actual substance…but I’m glad to say that i like the content as well :) Another good video and I’ll subscribe 🙌🏽
Great video as usual, Russ. :) I'm not a fan of this design. "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should." I agree with you that it's lazy. Whoever designed this didn't stop to think if the two watches that make up this chimera make for an attractive watch when combined. The watch from the 70s that you showed works well because the see-through dial is relatively clean. You can see the date wheel clearly. It doesn't work nearly as well if you smash all the SKX markers on to it. IMO, it makes the translucent dial pointless. Add to that the translucent caseback, and it looks like they're trying to hide the innards of the watch. It might be for someone, but it's not for me.
Agreed my friend. The watches look great and would appeal to many! But like proper Enthusiasts, once you peel that onion, you are left with a cheapened product and a ‘what could’ve been’ product!
Look like a 4R36 movement with the day date like in the others Seiko 5, and not a 4R35 with only the date. As funny and entertaining to watch, a great choice of watch as usual. With a good jubilee bracelet, like on the king trurle or an Orien Kamasu, the watch will look excellent.
Great show as always MWC 👏👏👏👏 These aren’t really my thing but they seem like a fun variation and a nice nod to Seiko’s past. I don’t have an issue with the 5KX not being a true diver but it would have been nice to see a more faithful chronograph reissue which would have been something new for the revamped Seiko 5 line. A chrono would have almost made it a must buy but if you’ve got a diver and aren’t into fun colours (like me 😂) then these are neither here nor there really. But of fun though for sure 👍
I love Seiko. But if they're gonna be putting out this many watches based on the SKX case, why don't they just REISSUE THE SKX007/9?! 4R36, drilled lugs, screw in crown, lume pip at 12, ISO. People would pay for that.
I have the same opinion on these. I saw Marc's video on them a while back and all I got out of it was " oh another version of the 5KX" I'd rather they had re-issued The Time Sonar as it was. I own one of their Recraft models. They make some great looking retro pieces. A new Time Sonar would have been Suh-WEET! 🤣 They've just churned out so many versions of the 5KX I'm really over it. It's become Seiko's fashion watch. Cheers Russ!❤
Not horrible but nah. Budget all the way down the checklist (as to be expected from Seiko now) and to me the dial looks toy like although interesting. Loved the original sonar though.
Nice looking watches, but I am not a fan of the Seiko 5KX. It has a confused identity, and these sonars do not help its case much. Seiko should have reissued these as chronos also. Thanks for the video!
The SBSA177/SRPJ41 Kosuke Kawamura limited edition version of the Time Sonar at least approximates the look of the original, if you're game for paying at least $700+ USD for garden variety Seiko specs (MSRP is $945). Seiko's recent volume of output is diluting the brand--many new releases fall into the "all looks and no brains" category--just a step away from fashion watches.
I think under the 400 pound mark , Seiko has become purely fashion based as you suggest! To get a great Seiko you have to pay the good money these days unfortunately;(
It's a very poor effort 😤 how many 5kx do we need really 😬 I have the orange one and have given it a sapphire and a new bezel insert but once you have one 🤔meh!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR I didn't know there was a Street Fighter series. They are amazing, guess I like gimmicky after all. A Blanka or Zangief version for me.
Interesting and disappointing how interesting the idea is - creative dial, but they went into a route too safe. Wonder how the Time Sonar would look like in all its glory (and functions) true to the original
Seiko should have released these with their meca quartz movement. Then it would have been a great call back to the originals. I would have bought them in a flash!
I have a suggestion for a video. Do Seiko release too many models? There are so many it's hard to tell them some of them apart. To me it's all becoming a blur. Rolex has come in for a lot of hate lately but I always think they had just the right number.
See I think that’s a good thing my friend! I have 10 Seiko’s and only one Rolex . I don’t want another Rolex but I’d like another 10 Seiko’s! There is more chance you find your perfect watch with Seiko then Rolex in this case? I’m done with the brand Rolex. I will never be done with Seiko! ;) all the best my friend!

Really like them as well. Just wish they were “real divers” with screw down crown and would have preferred a solid case back.

I have the blue one, it looks better in person than in video/pictures. It really is a gorgeous watch.. Not fancy, but nice.

@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR I didn't know there was a Street Fighter series. They are amazing, guess I like gimmicky after all. A Blanka or Zangief version for me.
Minimum Effort, Maximum Effect..! Seiko I Meant Not U, Russ, Thank U, ps I Sent U a Mssg.
That should be the strap line!!!!!
Interesting and disappointing how interesting the idea is - creative dial, but they went into a route too safe. Wonder how the Time Sonar would look like in all its glory (and functions) true to the original
Thirsty was mint
Seiko should have released these with their meca quartz movement. Then it would have been a great call back to the originals. I would have bought them in a flash!
When will this channel reach 1M subs yet?
Yeah , very lazy lol , you must be one of the few collectors who would have the new Seiko 5's on their show .So well done dear boy!
Hahahaha cheers Mal! They certainly did charm me! But imagine how cool they could’ve been!
Your wife’s review is gold 😅
She’s an institution nowadays!;)
Good vid m8
Cheers Christopher!
I totally agree that the design is lazy, but they look good.
Agreed!
When are you releasing a “what the wife thinks” hardback book of watch reviews 😂😂. Totally agree here though. Looks cool, falls a bit flat.
Hahahahaha!!! I don’t wanna big her up to much!!
