38mm DS Action Diver is fantastic - have one in Ti (best overall watch in the collection), and black dial stainless (candidate for“best one watch collection”).
Certina is so common in my area I thought it was just a mall brand when I started collecting. Now I know better, the divers and precision drive quartz are amazing.
I wear a Certina DS PH200M almost daily and I love it. It’s a re-issue of a ‘60’s diver with an updated ceramic bezel. It’s an excellent time keeper and wears much smaller than its 43mm dimensions would suggest at only 12mm thick. Picked it up for just $650 at Joma Shop. Bargain of the century because the quality and finishing is really good and compares to those at much higher price points. To your point, I hadn’t heard of Certina until I spotted this watch online as they have almost zero presence here in America. Thanks for doing a show on them!
Here in Sweden Certina has been a quality brand for decades. I own one and it was my only watch for many years before I started my humble collection. Its a Quartz chrono. Compared to my seikos and Hamilton the quality feel is miles better on the bracelet which have milled clasp a good divers extension. The chrystal is far better then my other watches. But even Sweden the worst snobbs dont like Certina. Im glad you brought them up. And Thanks for a great show. 😊
good show, in Switzerland you can find Certina in departement stores and some big watch boutiques. Good watch and good design. I bet Swatch Group fergot they hown it. 🤣
I totally agree with your comment about Certina needing to stand out more. A few fantastic pieces, with as you say the history to back it up and at a great price point. I have Titanium DS action diver, and I love it. Well finished , 300m , titanium diver all for under £900 is unbelievable! Highly recommended.
Hi russ, great vid. I feel the same about alpina. They do an awesome compressor diver. I think it’s around 15 though. But yes there’s loads of great options if you’re prepared to ignore the big boys.
I’m wearing my D.S. Blue Ribbon, and it’s one of my Favorites. It’s a quartz diver, 300m w.r. build quality is great and I paid under $200.00usd. I also have a D.S.8, and have had a few others that I sold. Great brand all in all
When I called into Swatch service about an issue I was having with a repair on a Certina, the agent was genuinely surprised that I owned a Certina in the US. It seems they're also being selective about where they are marketing certain brands. I thought that was interesting.
Very interesting! If an AD in the Uk want let’s say Hamilton , it seems as though they must also have others from the Swatch group. Certina’s display never does them any favours and they are never in a prime time spot in the window!;)
Enjoying your videos from the Bahamas. U mentioned that it looked similar to Seiko and other brands, but I think it actually looks very much like a Squale 1521
Trivia: Ed Bishop (as Cmdr Straker) wore a Certina in the ITC TV series "UFO" (1969-70). He liked it so much that he kept it (it may have been an end of show gift). Anyway. As you were 😊.
I have to admit I wasn’t as aware of Certina, but what a watch this is! Vintage inspired vibes, love it and love the strap that looks like leather but is rubber, despite its somewhat button, squashed macaroon appearance! Mrs MWC thank you again for usual honestly brutal and hilarious feedback that has started my day off well!
At first I didn't like the shape of this watch, but now I think I'm getting the hang of it. I have a blue 38mm DS Action diver - fantastic! Certina is a well known brand in Hungary and so is Tissot and Doxa.
Hi MWC! It's funny that you issued this video on Certina right now, because I have been digging the whole week into the Certina history after I have seen a video from Red Dead Restoration, restoring a 1968 Certina DS where I discovered for the first time this rubber ring protecting the movement inside, which I find very original and a precursor to Casio. I love actually the look of these Certinas from the late '60 and early '70. I think the brand at that time was much more well-known.
@@giusext That's very interesting my friend. When you mention the rubber ring, I assume you don't mean the gasket , is it some kind of shock absorber for the movement ?
@@brianmsahin Correct! There is a groove around the movement block where it sits a big rubber ring (which is >2mm thick and it's open, unlike an O-ring).
So my mom wanted a tool watch and she was coming from a Seiko with a 26mm dial… Certina was the only brand making a dive watch less than 36mm (34.5 to be precise). I have not given it to her yet but I think she’ll like it. It does look like a sub.. but in her case that’s a good thing since a regular sub would never work on her wrist… or my wallet. Great video!
Definitely agree they need to do something about their overall business strategy, because it's a shame. The quality is there, they have heritage on par, if not more than many of the Swatch Group brands and the prices aren't crazy either. Also, good to see you are looking into your followers'suggestions. Big 👍🏼
I have the Limited EDition with the orange dial and i LOVE it! Super comfortable to wear and epic looks. If you want a 4 Hz movement have a watchmaker swap the Powermatic for a Sellita SW-200. Hands and stem are compatible.
Thr divers are such good quality and understated. Shout out to DS1 day date with its piepan dial. Your preferences to vintage watches aside, their vintage stuff goes on and on. A good sign of quality.
That is a great looking diver Every time I see the PH logo I read Phantom??? God knows why! Anywho, I love their Dive collection and hopefully will add one soon. If I hadn't picked up a Tuna last month this would have been in my sights. Great show as ever. Cheers
Here in Sweden Certina and Tissot have sort of the opposite relation, EVERYONE who just wants a ”nice watch” wears Certina, even our prime minister. I’ve worn a DS action 38 nearly exclusively for three years, the bracelet is terrible but I wear it on a sailcloth strap which works really well
This has been this summer's wet/beach watch. Its got it all and on a zulu diver coral sea tropic strap, next level. Was considering a Doxa, but after seeing this. It's got everything Doxa has but half the price. And the powermatic 80 in this doesn't have the plastic parts, so is servicable. Great watch, cheers Russ.
Great review mad fella - exactly mirrors my thoughts on this watch. I bought this exact ‘Save The Turtles’ model when it first released. Glad I waited and didn’t get the orange model as the orange-hand on orange-dial just disappears and clashes. This colour is perfection (sorry to your wifey!) Few notes: -The push-to-turn bezel reminds me of those child-safe medicine bottles. -This turquoise/teal edition is a special “Save The Turtles” version with proceeds supporting The Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC). It even has a special caseback with the STC Turtle logo instead of the regular Certina turtle logo. -Squale claim to have made the first push-to-turn bezel: “The Squale 2001, with its iconic case featuring hidden lugs, was the first watch to incorporate the "push to release" technology, allowing the bezel to be locked after setting the dive times”. Not sure which really came first through. -The Powermatic 80 used in this model is a higher grade that has the Nivachron balance spring and less (no?) plastic parts.
I love Certina, I have DS-2 tunno case and DS Action Diver 38, after buying the latter, I find myself ignoring all other watches I have. I love my both Certinas, both feel very substantial and reliable and both have pretty accurate Powermatic 80 movements. Also love that their non-dive watches often have WR well above actually needed. Love their overengineering.
Love my Certina's! Super PH500m in orange has such a classic and unique acompanied by some interesting history aswell. Think you are right, they should turn Certina into the toolwatch lover next to the a bit more sporty/luxury Tissot brand. Their 38mm Divers are great but a bit generic, same goes for their 43mm line up. Spruce it up a bit and step out of the shadow Certina! With the more unique watches like my PH500m and this PH1000mst you have some great heritage and designs!
Historically it could be argued that Certina sits along side Bulova. The problem is mostly in the UK as Certina is seen plentiful in retail windows across the EU. Vintage DS/PH models command respectable prices circa Doxa / Omega equivalents as the WIS communities have been collecting them for +20 years. What I’m not too sure about is whether modern Certina is a zombie brand victim of the quartz crisis. +10 years ago there was a lot of junk being sold bearing the brand name. Perhaps the Swatch Group acquisition has helped with the remarketing and of course dipping back into the archives. Other brands for you to consider are PhilipWatch (Caribbean) and Aquastar (Benthos 500). Pleased you’ve done this video Russ. Former owner of a Certina DS PH1000 (black dial) here.
It's a beauty Russ. The blue here doesn't show the real life blue, not your fault just that it has to be seen in real life to really see how good it is. This one is more legible than my yellow one. I would give the lume a 5.5, there isn't enough and it dies quickly. I don't mind the beat rate, mine runs at around +6 to 8 and I love the 80 hours 😀 Great review, glad you like it! Great watches, you can feel the quality in the build and when winding it!👍
Not available in US I had to order mine from Switzerland. Best watch I've ever owned. You could feel the thought placed on design on its every corner it's a great watch!
Great brand, massively underrated. I have a DS Podium automatic chronograph, we have another quartz chronograph and a COSC Quartz ladies dive style in the family
One brand nobody seems to talk about, is the Solar Aqua. It's a Swiss brand with over 100 year Canadian history. Originally made by Rolex for Canadian retailer Eatons. It even had the Rolex crown symbol on the crown. Now they make an automatic diver called Deep Bay, that has a 2136m WR and auto helium escape valve. I would love to see someone review this watch. Maybe you, Russel!?
I like my Certina DS Diver Aqua in 38mm. I couldn't find the one I wanted here in US so I purchased it from a seller in Europe earlier this year. It looks great, fits well and keeps excellent time. The 38mm is definitely not too small compared to a 40mm Sub and a 42mm Omega SMP 300 which I have.
Certina is a great brand! I own the DS1 sports watch (GADA) that was on sale on Jomashop a couple of years ago. Love that watch! Another brand that has the same branding/marketing issue is MIDO and also very underrated and better quality than Tissot. I just received the Mido Multifort 38 mm and it's built like a tank for a dress/sports watch, with a Mido Caliber 80 movement and all under $350 at Jomashop too!! Certina and Mido are hidden gems!
When I was looking for a Pepsi bezel GMT watch, my final 2 was a Christoph Ward C65 Trident GMT and a Certina DS Action GMT. Did a lot of thinking and ended up going with the CW, but it was a very hard choice! Wouldn't mind adding a Certina to the collection at all.
I have the DS 500 VDST special edition. It's fantastic although it is somewhat conflicted as to what it is - tool diver in some ways, polished dressy case says otherwise though. But it's orange dialled, chunky, well made, and therefore staying.
I got the Certina DS Super PH 500 - yes, quite a mouthful! its a 1970's re-release known as the UFO or flying saucer? Was used in underwater research labs - Tektite Project...that's all I know. I preferred it's looks over the 1000m (also got a cracking discount from a small independent jeweller in Perth, Scotland) but either or really, both are nice. Got my eye on a Certina DS 2 now. Very good quality for the money. Lesser known in some areas, which is quite nice in a way, makes it feel a bit more special!
You are right, Certina is a fantastic brand that doesn't get the backing it deserves from Swatch. A lot of ADs seem to stock both Tissot and Longines but not Certina for some reason. A real shame, because the watches tend to be better designed and built than Tissot and only slightly more expensive . . . way better value for money than Longines too it has to be said. Love my DS-2 and DS Caimano, Certina are also good with more dressy watches which are usually the ones I go for.
Certina is a great brand. First time i heard of this company was in the 90's when i found a advertisement in a magazine for the "Certina Cascadeur". It was big, it was bad and i wanted it. Unfortunately I've been only 15 years old and the watch was much to expensive for me. But many years later i bought my first Certina. The DS Action Diver Titanium was also my first automatic watch and i still wear it. They're really underrated and should be known by a bigger audience. Another great "gada watch" ist the DS-2. It looks good, feels good on the wrist and got a water resistance of 200m. Maybe you could review a few more watches of this brand?!
I like their DS-2 as well. I agree, Certina is squished between Tissot/Hamilton and Longines. Certina definitely seems to be the forgotten child of Swatch Group
certina is indeed underrated. i have a ds multi-8 (poor man's breitling aerospace). ds action divers are killer deals. very innovative brand too (ds-double seal/security technology)
Woohoo, finally a watch again that isn't a Casio or some boring field watch with cringe military marketing! Now I can stay subscribed to the channel! Love Certina, they really are an underappreciated brand.
Great brand great watch I’m stuck between certina Christopher ward or mido diver but thinking of Christopher ward trident but I want a Tudor BB 58 but I won’t wear it it took 6 years for to start wearing my tag lol most of my time a garmin sport watch is glued to my wrist cause I’m a runner 🏃 😂 great vid as always
I had a DS Action diver a few years back in the best blue out there. This was before the Powermatic nonsense so had a nice little 2824 instead. Much better.
Just bought a DS action diver. Like Hamilton I eyed it up for ages but never ever pulled the trigger. Blown away with it. Extremely comfortable and it’s just gorgeous on wrist. Went with the 38mm black dial version. I had ordered the dual colour turtle conservation model however the company I used messed me about and I just got a refund and bought the black dial version. The only real gripe is the lume is only really good when the eyes adjust, unlike either a citizen or a Seiko which pops even in low light. But it’s not a deal breaker. The bezel also is not as satisfying as I’d like but it’s entirely functional.
My granddad had one and I got it after he pasted away.i worn it for awhile and was not a watch person then.i did not worn it for years.at one point i wanna use it again and it was working. This watch is probably more 40 years old and never serviced it and still work’s good
There have been a number of Certina's i have really liked, but their lug to lug sizes seem to be on the large size a lot of the time. My skinny wrists don't help! That is a cracking watch, though.
It's one of the best dive watch releases of 2024. These dive watches are better than anything Tissot produced including the Tissot Seastar 2000 Professional
Great that you presented Certina brand in your show!! Really a brand for connoisseurs. I have the DS Action Diver 38mm and LOVE it!!!
That watch uses the powermatic 80, right?
Yes. In my watch very accurate😊
I had a Certina quartz and it was a good watch
38mm DS Action Diver is fantastic - have one in Ti (best overall watch in the collection), and black dial stainless (candidate for“best one watch collection”).
Are you getting yourself anything watch related for xmas 🎄?
Finally someone noticed. Certina is crazy good for the money. And their service is also special.

I like their DS-2 as well. I agree, Certina is squished between Tissot/Hamilton and Longines. Certina definitely seems to be the forgotten child of Swatch Group
Indeed a stunning watch from a great brand. Did you hear from Roamer? Founded in 1888
No!?

Love certina. Have a ph500. This one is also on my wish list👌
I have a 1970s Certina, given to my dad in 1976 or so for 25 years' service. Simple three hander in a gold case. I've never owned a modern one.
Great rant and justified because they've been put to sleep. Just need to hear their story and diving history, including the PH500
Buying one soon,very good watches!👍😎
I have a couple dive watches... they aren't my favourite, but that Certina is fantastic.
certina is indeed underrated. i have a ds multi-8 (poor man's breitling aerospace). ds action divers are killer deals. very innovative brand too (ds-double seal/security technology)
I have a moonphase and it's gorgeous.
"...squished macaroon..." - Brilliant!
Woohoo, finally a watch again that isn't a Casio or some boring field watch with cringe military marketing! Now I can stay subscribed to the channel! Love Certina, they really are an underappreciated brand.
I have the Certina DS Automatic Chronograph.
It oozes retro charm, and keeps great time (+2 secs. per day).
Gorgeous watch. I am getting Squale and Doxa vibes.
Very nice looking watch, but too expensive for my budget.
It's affordable for what it is though
I had a DS Action diver a few years back in the best blue out there. This was before the Powermatic nonsense so had a nice little 2824 instead. Much better.
Push to turn bezel was originally used on a Squale. Will you be getting your hands on the new Heritage 2001?
Please review DS Action Diver 38 mm.Great diver .
Im the happy owner of a DS Podium Titanium Chronograph since 2008, runs great only needing a battery every 12 month 👌🏻
It’s a nice one. But I am more interested in the new Seiko with hexagonal bezel
A handsome watch, cheers Russ 👍
My granddad had one and I got it after he pasted away.i worn it for awhile and was not a watch person then.i did not worn it for years.at one point i wanna use it again and it was working. This watch is probably more 40 years old and never serviced it and still work’s good
Certina is a great brand I have known about them for years I actually have 8 of them they are my favourite brand.
I wear a DS chrono GMT.😊
My grandfather had a dress Certina wich now is of my uncle. I wish someday will be mine, bur at least soooo many years to come.
I think a lot of people know about Certina, but it just doesn't do that much for them, although it is really great brand.
There have been a number of Certina's i have really liked, but their lug to lug sizes seem to be on the large size a lot of the time. My skinny wrists don't help! That is a cracking watch, though.
Great I am eyeing certina
I miss the Bezel Federation. Will you bring it back?
Haven’t had a bezel good enough for a long time
It's one of the best dive watch releases of 2024. These dive watches are better than anything Tissot produced including the Tissot Seastar 2000 Professional
Used certina watches from the 60's are really common and well priced, a bit like the timex which have been their competition.
Great dive tool
Oh the wife 😂😂
Macaroon 😂😂😂
