I clean homes for a living and many of my clients want environmentally friendly and less “toxic” cleaners. I have been using Dr. Bronners for several years now and am glad to see that it cleans as good as I hoped it did! I do have shower cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, and disinfectant wipes for certain things, but I use Dr. Bronners for most everything, including the floors. And the peppermint smells so nice.

I have very hard water that leaves mineral deposits in the toilet bowl, I used to use one for limescale that etched my bowl forcing me to continually buy this to get the toilet b I wl clean. I decided to try Dr Bronners liquid castile soap with vinegar and baking soda. My toilet bowl gers clean, no mineral stains left and the porcelain feels smooth, no more buying nasty toilet bowl cleaners

  • @lilolmecj
    @lilolmecj 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

This is my thought, and it might be wrong, but I am comfortable with it. In my toilet bowl I am primarily focused on avoiding mineral build up. Obviously it will never be truly “clean” due to the nature of its purpose. At the end of the day(s) the only truly effective solution, in my area, is to use a lava stick a once a month. I do want my home to be generally clean, but I also understand we literally ( not figuratively) could not exist without bacteria. It is a matter of decreasing the ones which can make us sick and maximizing the ones which support health. I do appreciate the labor intensive nature of your work!!!

Great thoughts! I agree that we do need to live in a sterile world and that there are most certainly beneficial bacteria all around us all the time. I just enjoy testing products to see if my home results match their product claims, and I enjoy testing what my viewers suggest. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@FieldOfFocus hey, I hope my comment didn’t sound like I am putting down your research in any way! I find your videos very interesting. And I certainly want my kitchen sink, counters, and dishes to be free of any bacteria that could make us sick. And in those areas I just assume all bacteria is pathogenic. Mostly I use chlorine bleach and vinegar. For my toilets I use a powder that foams, it seems to help a bit with the mineral ring. It appears to be primarily sodium bicarbonate and citric acid, so I am assuming chemically it is acting with the meeting of acid/base to create the foamy reaction.

I'm a newbee here. Well done!! My wife and I just had our "live blood cultures" done. One of the things we observed was the free radical damage to some blood cells. About 2 tablespoons to a quart of water with +- 15 drops of tea tree oil and +- 8 drops of Patchouli essential oil. I use cheap dish soap for the toilets, sometimes with Bon Ami. I’m sure a Petri dish sample of that would be interesting. 😳 I live alone, so no men or kids making messes in the bathroom. I avoid strong chemicals, so if there’s no illness in the house, I don’t worry about it.

I love using Dr. Bronner's Tea Tree/Eucalyptus as a AP cleaner. I so use SalSuds as a degreaser/AP cleaner. I usually rinse and then use disinfectant wipes as a precaution. I've been using Arm&Hammer Disinfectant Wipes as it's a citric acid based cleaner. I have asthma and chronic bronchitis, and Dr. Bronners is the only cleaner that doesn't cause an asthma attack.
I've found cleaners that use citric acid as the disinfectant don't irritate me as much as quat ammoniums do. I've stopped cleaning my stainless steel with hydrogen peroxide as it ate the rubber seals on my sink. I had to pay plumbers to replace the faucet. They showed me where the peroxide caused pitting. Since then hydrogen peroxide doesn't get used on any surfaces near seals.
I'd be curious to see if you could test a citric acid based cleaner such as the Arm and Hammer wipes or the Clorox Fragrance Free disinfecting spray.

I love dr. Bronners, it's a great soap for dried food droplets after cooking or cleaning up a table with multiple toddlers eating. While I use it to clean the bathtubs, I don't expect it to disinfect. A fellow scientist once told me, "you can't sanitize dirt", and it's true, so I like to go over areas once with a soap and follow with a disinfectant afterwards if I want to sanitize. Breathing in the spray with the scented or unscented Dr. Bronners is uncomfortable, I agree for sure, but it's not a long lasting discomfort compared to breathing in a bleach or chemical product. It's also food safe, so you can wash veggies with it. I've tried it as a body wash and shampoo and I do not recommend. Great as a diluted foam pump hand washing solution. The label has a myriad of other uses, I encourage people to give it a try! Just not on the toilets :) The one bottle lasts FOREVER, and you can usually find them at tjmaxx for $8-9.

This makes me happy because I use Bronnors in Peppermint scent and Rose scent. I’ll switch which scent according to my mood. lol! I usually use Peppermint during winter and Rose the other months. I used to get Meyers Autumn scents during fall but they’re SOOOOOO STRONG that I started to worry about my family and my cats. So I backed off her stuff. Plus for a little spray bottle Meyers is soooo costly. Bronnor’s is much more cost efficient and it cleans grease up amazingly well too! My husband does more cooking and he is sloppy especially with bacon grease. 😅

As a soap, one would expect Dr Bronners castille soap to be non-problematic for a chemically sensitive person, like other castille soaps, but I and many others have not found this to be true. Even on the hand, the smell is really strong after washing. I don't use ANY Dr. Bronners problems as I have found them to affect breathing. For handsoap (which for me means as shampoo also) I find Kirks to be great and without smell.

I’ve been using Dr Bronners for years. My favorite is the Eucalyptus one. I use it on my dishes and laundry soap when I run out of either one. Haven’t used it for surface disinfectant. By what I understand, I could be wrong, don’t the eucalyptus and tea tree oils in Dr Bronners products serve as antibacterials? I’m no scientist, but I thought I’d run that question by you. I only used the unscented in the small bottle for new tattoos. Even the eucalyptus and tea tree I’ve used on new tattoos lol. Burns more though. I love how clean it gets my skin feeling, but does it actually clean my skin? Just curious, do you have any preferences on skin soaps you’ve tested? I’ve recently been to the ER for a bacterial rash on my rib cage that I believe came from the gym I used to frequent. Not anymore!!! After 10 days on antibiotics, I’m walking 2 miles a day outdoors for exercise. I’m on the hunt for the best antibacterial skin soap that doesn’t cause drying. Let me know!!! Thanks for the video. Very interesting.

Hello! I have never had a front loader but I have heard horror stories about them. I do have two videos about cleaning my top loader HE “Fix a Stinky Washing Machine Using My Bissell Power Steamer!!” and “Clean Your Washing Machine Now!!!!!! Review of the Basket Clean Cycle.” I think if I were you, I would get a flashlight, get some wipes or a cloth and wipe the inside of the drum and see how much dirt/grime comes off. Look at the drain holes, are they clogged like mine where in the stinky washing machine video? Then wipe all around the gaskets, see if you can find the source of the moldy smell. Really get up into the folds and see if you can find the source. GOOD LUCK!!!

Add a cup of ammonia to every rinse, it takes out soap scum from your clothes. Your washer smell will be gone. You also can fill the washer without clothes and let it set over night then let it go through the cycle.

Hi there! This was one of my first videos from a few years ago.. The directions for the toilet bowl said 10 min and I did wait 10 min (5:57 timestamp). As for the all purpose spray, I must have chosen 5 min from something I read... I do remember the toilet bowl specifically said 10 minutes. Sorry I don't have the exactly paperwork or site that used t choose 5 minutes.. it also might have been a conversation I had with the viewer who suggested this test also.

@@FieldOfFocus I know you are probably already overwhelmed with all the suggestions you get, I have been experimenting with another natural cleaner and would love to see your tests on it.
It is a homemade natural cleaner made with soap nuts.
      This is the recipe:
2 liters of water, 25-30 soap nuts boil down to 1 liter. If there are seeds inside, deseed them. Them squish the pulp to extract saponins. Strain. This can be used as an all purpose cleaner, hand wash, dish soap, body wash, floor cleaner, or can be used to do laundry.
      --dishsoap and hand wash:
It can be used at full strength to wash the dishes or as hand wash. I would love to see its effectiveness, if it really does work well as good hand wash to remove bacteria.
      - all purpose cleaner: 25% soapberry extract and 75% water vs. full strength , I would be interested to see how it works on all the surfaces you normally do your testings on
      - for floor cleaner: 1,5 cups of soapnut water, 1 cup of vinegar, 1 big heaped teaspoon of pink Himalayan sea salt, 8 drops of tea tree essential oil, 8 drops of lavender oil. Mix together and dilute with water before using to clean the floor. 50-100 ml of the liquid for one bucket of water.
      - laundry: people seem to like using it as a natural laundry solution, there are two ways of using soap nuts for this purpose: one is to use 150-200 ml of Soapnut liquid (n the place provided for detergents) for about 6 kg of laundry. Another way is to take about 10-12 whole Soapnuts (can be deseeded or with seeds; this measurement is for 6-8 kgs of clothes) and put them in an old sock and tie the mouth of the socks tightly such that no soapnuts can escape. Then we throw in this sock along with the wash load (with the clothes, not in the place provided for detergents) and run the machine like we normally would .
This maybe extremely time consuming, I just couldn’t stop myself from wondering about this after watching all of your videos and learning so much. Maybe that would also be interesting to you to see if homemade natural cleaners are any good at removing bacteria. Thank you again, your channel is one of my best finds on TH-cam. Have a beautiful day !

As for my youtube viewers occasionally I will make a community post and let the viewers choose what video I edit that weekend. As for choosing products, I do what is mailed to my by viewers first, then I look at the list and see what has lots of requests, and what my home is ready for. Some tests take a month or more to complete. So for example, if I am in between bacteria testing, I will sneak in a soap scum video! Thanks for the suggestion!

I do not have any information or way of testing product safety for bathing. However, the Dr Bronner's website they do have dilutions for use on the skin

Didn't the website say to wait 10 minutes for the toilet, could that be why the toilet did so badly. I would think the Toilets would have the most germs, my kitchen counter and ect I wash a few times a day but my bathroom toilet I only do 3 times a week, could making the mixture a little stronger or letting it sit for the 10 work better for the toilet.

Hi there! Yes the website said wait 10 minutes and that is what I did for the toilet bowl. Sample, spray, wait ten minutes, scrub, flush, resample. I think the biggest thing to remember is that Dr Bronners is a cleaner, it is not a disinfectant or sanitizer. They do not have any claims that they remove bacteria. For my home, Dr Bronner's doesn't remove much bacteria from my toilet bowl. Would a less dilute solution work better? I am not sure, I haven't tested that yet.

    thanks.
Can you recommend some/a way to do these bacteria tests in our homes, places we frequent? Is there a way to DIY incubator or use a near by science lab?
I note that here in Chicago the whole City went nuts 4 years ago with COVID about sanitation, masks, public interaction, now pretty much nothing - and we've been flooded with very unhealthy migrants who have measles, TB I suspect sanitation, lack of vaccines and crowding are an issue.
I 'd like to promote cleanliness and sanitation in my, neighbors, business, public spaces - can you give me/us some recommendations about doing these tests?

The best thing I can suggest you to do in your homes, is to use a product that I have tested that you are pleased with the results and use them according to the manufacturers directions on the packaging. I think for business and public spaces you should reach out to your Department of Health and ask what they require of the businesses and public areas to be cleaned.

@@FieldOfFocus This is Chicago - the City that used to work.
Now all our city government departments are Woke, racial. Those remaining civilized people left behind in Chicago are now scrambling to do things on our own, like prevent car jackings, youth mob flash mobs takeovers of areas, rioting and looting. It's naive to think the Chicago city government is going to protect us, pick up the garbage police the streets or keep bars and restaurants clean. That's a nope.

Don't know why my comments don't appear. Probably because I included a link to another website?
So let's try again. I said I was a big fan of your videos and your tests, and I also said that, in reply to your comment about the fact that you couldn't find any info on the disinfecting properties of the product on their website, if you check on Lisa Bronner's website, she does mention that the soap doesn't kill the germs, but removes them.
I thought this could be helpful.

Thank you for the info about the Bronner’s site. I was so happy that they didn’t have a 99.9% claim since it is a soap and not “disinfectant”. I was super happy with how well it cleaned. Thank you for watching!!!

Are there a lot of people eating from their toilet bowls and toilet bases? How clean do these things need to be?

    • @FieldOfFocus
      @FieldOfFocus  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I hope not! But there are a lot of people curious to see what cleaners remove bacteria. I was curious to see if product claims were true, and in this case this video was a viewer request.

Well when you live in an apartment, you can't turn the water off if you have a house. It's a different story, but if you live in an apartment, you can't do that so this would not work for someone like me to have to do that. So yeah, I would say, yeah, that's a big no.

Maybe it would be better if you can do it but with all the protocols taking all those tests and the microbiological process to do it in a lab. By the way is a real good video.
