    Maybe I'm missing something here, but if you're doing this from the inside, you've already had to drain and remove your pool liner. Is this really cost effective to do before your have to replace your liner anyway? And at that point, maybe you should just replace the pool wall?

    You mention that the other rust on the left is not a concern because it is surface rust, but won't that surface rust turn into a hole just like the one you are fixing?

      I would definitely recommend putting some Rust-Oleum on it but the video was more to show how to fix one that already has a hole in the wall.

    I have a hole in the metal of my pool (size of a nickle) that needs to be repaired. There was a hole in the liner that we just fixed but obviously it has been around for a while and the wall of the pool is rusted. Any advice please

    • @abovegroundpros

      A hole that size shouldn't be too much of a problem. I would probably wait until it's time to replace the liner and then put a piece of metal on top of it just like we show in the video.

    Great Videos Guys !! OK, have a rust hole.....after chipping away at it, the hole is 6" long and 2 inches wide...The hole is at the very TOP of a 15+ year old 18ft round...I ordered the sheet metal flashing, but now wondering if you folks think this is worth the repair? I pulled off the liner and around this hole, is a ton of surface rust which I can sand and spray.... Just wondering your thoughts ??

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +stma111 Since its at the top of the pool (where minimal water wieght is) you may be OK, but you'll have to judge it for yourself. Usually holes at the top don't effect the pool stregth like a hole on the bottom of the wall.

    after the aluminum or steel sheeting on the inside could you use a bondo type material on outside and then paint over it?

    I see rust around my return line on the outside wall of my pool, should I just replace the whole pool instead of just a liner? I see a lot of sand washed out from around the bottom & it took about 1 month for the pool to leak out to almost empty now. Thank you?

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could always patch the inside of the pool wall covering the return and cut a new return a couple feet away from it. This way you could save the pool and just replace your liner.

    I have a hole in the pool wall abour the size of a quarter and it is below the cove at the bottom. Would it be safe to do your repair to it? I don't want to take a chance on a blowout. Also, the rusted areas on the wall is it better to use the more expensive stuff than rustoleum?

    Would you recommend sanding the rust off and treating the area to help with the rust not spreading any further

    • @abovegroundpros

      Absolutely. Sand down the rust and spray some Rustoleum on it. This will help it from rusting further.

    How much rust is too much? I have about a 4 inch span all along the bottom of the pool behind the sand.

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rafael Morales It more about how much rust damage. There can be lots of surface rust and that's no big deal. If the rust is weakening the wall and eating through it, then that's the problem.

  • @HaileyB215
    @HaileyB215 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is it recommended to do this with water already in the pool. I have a similar rust spot with 2 small holes but no water leakage. The holes might be from a weed wacker or a previous repair as I had liner replaced in 2015

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No you definitely want to do it when the pool is drained

    • @HaileyB215
      @HaileyB215 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So doing this method to the exterior of the pool does nothing. I have no leak just what seems to be surface rust and hole the size of two pins . Weedwackwr damage. I do have a proctecive barrier as well between the wall and liner. Just didn't want to drain the pool if I didn't have to

    • @abovegroundpros

    wish you were in my area, hire you in a minute.... I may have to do repairs on my oval pool wall, is it ok if I remove the liner and don't replace the liner in a week or so.... or should I cut the liner and leave on sand bottom to protect the sand floor till new liner is installed.

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would probably be wise keep the bottom of the liner in the pool to protect the sand but I also wouldn't recommend keeping the pool empty for very long for fear that you have a bad wind storm

    Thanks so much for your fantastic videos. I am finding these all so helpful. We are a customer of yours now and I have a question. We just purchased a home from people who used your services for many years, we have an 24ft doughboy above ground pool and for whatever reason the original owners of the pool did not connect a 1-1/2 backwash hose to the filter drain plug outlet, so when water is drained from the Sta-rite system 3 filter, it pours directly towards the pool wall, instead of going away from the pool into the backyard drain. This has caused the pool walls to rust and it is flaking. I do not see any holes at all, but the flaking is about 2 inches high right by the filter drain and about 1 foot long. The pool otherwise looks like it is in good condition, except for this area. The pool is 15 years old, but it has a wooded porch that surrounds the entire pool, so it is enclosed.
    Would it be possible to do this with our pool? It seems like we would need to have the liner removed, put in sheet metal like you do here and then put in a new liner. Thanks again.

    I have a 12x24 oval pool with holes rusted around the base. The pool is 30 years old. I do not mind replacing it but my pool store says that they can repair it. I trust them very much but would like another opinion due to the age of the aluminum frame. My pool installed thirty years ago is an Atlantis pool. Should I replace the pool or just have the base padded and liner put in?

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not really sure what they intend to do to fix it so I went really know if it would be a good fix or not but replacing a thirty-year-old pool would always be a wise decision

      @@abovegroundpros Thank you for your reply.
      I was told that they can re-pad the pool wall. This pool place has a very good reputation as I did purchase the original Atlantis pool from them. I do not have much rust. However, I do have some pinholes in the wall. The part that seems most damaged with pinholes is the part that is in the ground (my yard is on a slope). I wish I could send you pictures. My purchase receipt says install foam to the entire pool wall, install filter system, install EC40 DE filter system, install liner installation, and open pool/check pool in two days. cost 2148.00

    Is it a good Idea to paint inside pool wall with Rustoleum enamal oil based paint to prevent further corrosion? Not sure if oil based will be a problem, plan on putting foam over the paint...... Thanks!

    Thankyou so much for answering our pool is half in the ground and it looks like it's just one of those pool kits that's been sunken the half that's sunken is surround by a breeze block wall then half above surrounded by wooden decking
    The rust is vast but it's seem only surface nowhere has holes really so I was doing some re search and against the odds of the guy who came and said you need a whole new pool costing around 4 thousand at best he kept prodding the liner with a screwdriver expected a while to come but it didn't do I asked him to stop and so here we are the liner is completely out I have ordered a new 20 thou liner ( arriving next week ) I was going to order felt underlay for walls as well ? And paint something from a DIY store to coat the rust , I am very grateful for your help , is there anything from a DIY store you could Recc ??

    I have a 18 round pool, the metal around the water return is rusted and not a whole lot holding the return in place, is there anything that can be done, the pool otherwise is in good shape for it's age, we thought about cutting a new hole for the return and putting a piece is aluminum over the rusted out hole.

    finding your video is like finding an angel, ive just been dealt the blow the house i bought the pool is knackered its a 24 x 12 oval and the liner has gone thin white and crispy it literally emptied over two days due to a huge tear in the floor , to top me off as the liner been pulled away some parts of the wall are covered in rust , the guy was quoting 740 plus vat for new liner ( 20 thou) and saying wont get much change from 3k to sort this , if we can sort it then starting talking about filling it in , im desperate to find a suitable cost effective solution , even if it only does us for 2/3 summers there must be something we can do to protect the new liner which Ive found on net for 400 ( 20 thou ) doughboy range ? he was trying to bang a screw driver through the wall but it didn't go through , can you offer any advice ?

    • @abovegroundpros

      +Lotte Edwards Rust comes in 2 forms: surface rust (which everyone has on their pool to some extent) and deep rust (which weakens the wall and can create issues. If you determine that the wall is still strong and just has surface rust then a new liner will be fine, but if the wall has weakened severely then putting a liner in a pool in this shape would be a potential nightmare down the road. You would have to determine how bad the rust is first.

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dee Wilson doing it from the outside really wouldn't serve any purpose. You would want to do it from the inside but to do that you would have to drain the pool which in turn could ruin the liner. You would either have to do that or wait until you're going to replace the liner and fix it then.

    i don't have a problem with the method as a cheap fix, but what sloppy execution.
    you really gonna put a new liner in there when its gonna rust through 2 feet over next year?
    also, why use metal here? if your not going attach it in a manor to reinforce the tensile strength of the ring(weld, braze, rivot), its just a another thing to rust & puncture the liner. vinyl flashing is a better (and cheap) alternative here....round the corners, CLEAN the mating surfaces & tape it like you've use tape before (neatly).
    now i'm no "pro", just a guy with a pool....here's my method (still solid @ 8 years):
    -stripping away the rusted area, you will quickly find its worse than you thought, but rust is like cancer, gotta cut it all out.
    - thoroughly cleaning the area-- basically got to somewhat shiny metal on both sides.
    -patch area with fiberglass, multiple coats if needed. sand smooth.
    -at min. prime all bare metal & fiberglass (i got a color match done for the exterior)
    my oldest patch is 8 years old, about the size of a large softball, has held up well.
    I would caution using this method in large areas(~1/2 panel) as the fiberglass lacks the flexibility the original steel wall has.
    I got some new holes to repair in a few weeks. Looking forward to trying a vacuum bag technique with the fiberglass. Perhaps i'll do my own video showcasing a proper method & the condition of my previous repairs.
