    My above ground pool had a leak few years ago so I tried diving to find it and couldn't so what I did was pump out water down to about one foot above where the side liner seam is bonded to the bottom liner (as long as your water level stays ABOVE that CRITICAL SEAM JUNCTION while you do this you will not harm a vinyl liner) Then I was able to go around on my hands and knees and found the hole easily! I patched it with Water Bed Repair patch kit I got at pool supply store then refilled pool and balanced chemicals, all good to go then! You just don't want to hit the patch with Vacuum or anything it was a foot away from the side in area I don't go by so I don't walk on patch either.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you. Had no idea how to find a hole in my liner. Over the winter I noticed water on the ground and the water level under the cover was dropping. I was totally ready to order a new liner then I watched your video and found the hole with within a couple of minutes. This just saved me a bunch a time and money.

    We suspected a leak and the worst part, it has been raining nearly non-stop and our backyard stays damp with all the shade! Hoping to find the leak tomorrow morning. I suspect I know where it is, but your tips are helpful, especially the description of how big a hole (safety pin size) drains the pool (inch a day).

    Just put together our 22ft x 12ft x 52in pool. Started filling it up, stopped and started draining! :( Noticed an area that had water pooling outside of the pool. :( This pool is too big for this madness. The lining is blue but has designs on it so I can tell it's going to be tough to find. Loved the video, hopefully between my wife and I, we'll be able to locate and repair the hole in our pool.

    Once I found a hole I used food coloring to see if that was the leak. Just went under water and put a drop of food coloring near the hole and you can see it go out the hole. I used the waterproof gorilla tape and it sealed it right up for now. I’ll buy a patch kit to fix it permanently.

    New catchment tank installation. Started leaking at the rate of 2000 gallons a day whether pump is on or off. Suspected hole in liner. Three people went into tsnk (installer, plumber and neighbor) and checked at water level (pump off, water level stable overnight). No damage was found. We are baffled.

    Thanks for the video. I'm losing about an inch of water on a 24 round in a weeks time, no water puddles on the outside. I thought it was evaporation when it was really hot, but now that it's in the 60s and 70s not so sure. I have a couple of extremely slow drips in a couple areas, at a hose connection and drain spout from the filter. Doesn't seem like it would be leaking that much water in that period of time from those leaks though.

      I'm not an expert, but if tree+plant roots can crack concrete driveways+metal pipes, I'd think they can easily make it through a pool liner.
      The previous owner of my place planted 10ft bushy trees all around the above ground pool for privacy. I don't think they ever thought about the roots puncturing the liner, or the increased algae growth.
      I'm learning about pools the hard way, one pita at a time. I'm starting to feel like having a pool is like having a boat.

    Question? How the heck do you position yourself on the bottom of a pool and still use your hands? I dont have scuba equipment and my toes don't work nearly as well as my fingers. My kids offered to keep me down at the pool floor by standing on me, but my wife quickly reminded me that this was not the type of lesson we want to teach our kids. I concurred.

    I have a small rock trying to poke up thru the liner. Is it best to make a small cut and remove the pebble or stick a patch over it to reinforce the area?

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would probably leave it alone cuz usually if it was going to poke a hole it would have already done it. If you decide to pass it though and you cut the liner and pull the rock out chances are it's going to leave a divot in your floor as the water runs through. You could do it that way or you could just patch over top of it but honestly I would probably leave it alone until you had an issue with it.

  • @abovegroundpros

    The Boxer brand is the same that we use. Just keep in mind that the glue is great but the patch isn't. So its best to get a piece of vinyl off the overlap of the pool or from a pool store.

    I have a question. Over the winter my above ground pool has lost about 6 inches of water. The filter and pump is disconnected and pipes are capped. How do I know if my pool has a leak of there are no signs of water outside of the pool? Shortly after closing the pool, the water level went way down, so I added more water. Then water turned black because of loss of chemicals and not adding more. Now that winter is over, I have seen about a 2/3 loss of water from where the water level was when closing the pool. I have a bottom drain in the center. Thought it could he that, but a pool place said that if it was anything to do with the drain or a crack in the drain pipe, the pool would of been empty by now. Can you please help me figure this out?

    Is that the same glue plumbers use on PVC pipes? Smells the same and melts the vinyl like the plumbers glue melts the plastic PVC pipe. Moles burrow under my liner causing divots, and this time it poked or bit a hole in the vinyl. Any suggestions on repairing the divots (so far all are near the wall of the pool), and any advice on keeping the moles away? This new liner is only 2 months old.

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. You are thinking of PVC glue. Its a different chemical. Unfortunately, the divots are probably something you'll have to live with until you drain the pool down and replace your liner. There's too much water weight to fix them now, but if you drain your pool to fix them you might ruin your liner. As far as moles, you may have to talk to an exterminator about that. That's a bit beyond my knowledge on moles.

    I have 3 holes in my liner. 2 on the bottom and one at the inlet plastic fitting. The hole for the inlet was cut too large which became apparent when the plastic inlet fitting broke. When I replaced the plastic fitting the pool continued to leak. I then noticed that the installer cut the liner inlet hole too large and used silicone to fill the gap. I tried to use the method in the video to repair the leaks but the problem I had was that the glue dries very quickly in the warm weather and would not stick. I gave up on the problem and now I have a pool half full of green water. Is there a different glue I can use once the water has been drained?

    Is it better to patch it empty or after its filled up? We patched twice when empty, it held half full, but once full, they leaked it all out and we had to start over. I'm wondering if its better to patch it full (and underwater). Does the water stretch the liner out and maybe pull away from the patch that we put when it was empty? Or not. Thanks!

    • @abovegroundpros

    I have an above ground pool and we can see it leaking from the outside. Bubbling just like yours. We looked in the area of the hole and can’t find anything. We scraped away at dirt, no apparent black holes. When we go to where it is bubbling on the outside, we see sand coming out. Could this be a tiny tear in the liner somewhere that travels to the hole on the outside? What do you think and what should we do?

    we had ants and eggs on our wooden decking around above ground pool.we have never had this problem before the water is coming out and we cant find where it is going as it is raining all the time so everywhere is wet.it is now below where the water comes back into the pool .so that would mean it is the liner .we have had the pool years and its never had a hole.I have heard ants can put holes in liners is that true?The water level is now halfway down the pool is it easier finding holes with no water in the pool .

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here is a video explaining ants: th-cam.com/video/eIhpcTukS4s/w-d-xo.html
      It actually easier to find the holes with the pool full, due to more water weight opening the holes. If the pool water gets very low the holes almost close up and finding them gets very tricky.

    • @SimoneOconnell
      @SimoneOconnell 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Simone Oconnell you're welcome. You will probably want to keep your water level up until it stops raining and the ground dries. At this point it'll be much easier to find where the water's coming out because you have a wet spot around the pool.

      @SimoneOconnell 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ok thanks by the way yesterday my mum rung 5 pool places in uk that sell inground and above ground pools all of them just laughed and said they have never ever heard of ants putting holes in liners of pools.Is this a common thing to usa or is it worldwide.is it any type of ant ?It is all over the internet but they are all usa websites.I looked at that video thankyou very helpful but he says to put something to keep the ants away like a powder spray which only lasts 1-3 months.my dad said 1 small bottle of powder is several pounds the pool is 24 feet long it will cost a fortune doing it all the time.what is he using do you know of anything reasonable if you have to keep using it.The ants that were on the decking they were under the solar bubble which had only been put on the decking the day before.in one day and night there were a huge pile of white eggs and you could see they were carrying them all around.my dad washed it all down and put chlorine all over the decking .we thought that was the end of it but this has turned into rather a nightmare.

      michelle g That's right. The hole should be close to where the water is leaking out from the pool. Keep in mind though that if the ground underneath the pool is out of level, then it could be further away and just moving to the low side.

    Now what if the hole isn't that small? There's a hole that I patched today..it started off being about a quarter of an inch. Unfortunately it is on the floor part of the liner and there was an indent under the hole unbeknownst to me. As I was patching it (with the clear patch) I saw it grow to a little smaller than a dime. We cannot afford to buy a new liner and this one is only 3 years old. The patch is down but we are worried now as there is an air bubble under the patch. The edges are flush to the liner but when it grew in size it created that air bubble.

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is this site still active?
    I have an 18x33 truss free pool. There is a leak directly over one of the sill plates. The pool is 4years old, and there are many areas where the sand has apparently eroded and the support plates pool bottom are visible. Can I patch the hole over the base plate? Should I? There is a ground water issue in the spring and I’m thinking the ground water has washed the sand away.

      It's worth a shot to try but sometimes trying to patch over where this is occurred can be tricky. I'd give it a shot though.

    My pool stopped leaking at a certain level but a foot under the return. Is the leak at the water level? It has not leaked anymore since it got to this level. Will the leak be visible to the human eye? I am the one trying to fix it and have no experience.

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lorraine Keller that could be the case or because the water has come down so far the weight of the water on top of the hole may have caused the whole to slow down tremendously making it appear that it is stopped. You're really have to put on some goggles and just hop in there and see what you can find.

    i have a problem. my five year old got in as we were filling our pool for the very first time today, and grabbed the seam along the bottom and pulled it. Its now pulled away a touch, just enough to release a tiny stream of water riiiight directly on the seam along the bottom. a very tiny bit but definitely a problem.
    i dont think a patch is going to work on the seam. am i right? if so. . what can i do?
    I'm trying to find a glue that i can use to seal the seam but should i still use a patch inside and out maybe? i cant see it truly sealing on either side.

    • @abovegroundpros

    Have an above ground pool that has been loosing 1 inch per day for about 20 days now. The level of the water is now way below the skimmer so it's a liner problem for sure. With all that water loss there is no wetness anywhere around the outside of the pool. Is that possible?

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally you'll find water outside the pool but also if you're in sandy soil or in the heat that we've been having around the country that could be possible. It would be unlikely but it could be possible.

      Thanks for the quick response. My daughter actually found the leak today. Couldn't believe it but it was a 2 inch gash about half way up the sidewall. The water level has dropped to about 2 inches above the gash. Should I pump out water so I don't have to patch the gash while it's still under water or is the quality of the repair not affected when done under water? Would love to save that few hundred gallons of water if the repair quality is not affected.
