Just wanted to take a moment and thank you for making this video - I know a lot of folks never take the time and this was actually very, very useful to me both for getting an idea of the actual real-world performance and comparing the two mics against each other. Very well done. For what it's worth I agree that the Shure MVL has a better sound (based on your video, at least) but the Rode seems to get all the love on the web - a *lot* of people just really seem to like it. This comparo went a long way for me to decide between the two (I was about to just buy both lol and try to figure out which one I liked best.) Anyway, great job.

Thanks Jose, glad you liked it - these comments are always appreciated! :)
Yeah I also saw a LOT of love for the Rode, till I bought it myself and was utterly disappointed; ever since getting the Shure it's been sitting in my cupboard and I'll only ever resort to it as a desperate need if I ever have the Shure stop working!

The loop for the rode smartlav is actually a professional-style loop commonly called "the broadcast loop".
When I was working at a TV station, at AV gigs, and at Broadcast college, they ALWAYS told us to do the loop with every lav mic so it won't pull from the inside of the clothing.
    anyway, thanks for the comparison!

really good comparsion, thank you! - the smartlav has more bass and little bit more detail, but to me the shure mlv is more clear and you could listen to it much longer without getting disturbed by hum over time :)

I really appreciate this review. Till the "Verdict" section I was sure Rode is a winner with deeper and warmer sound, but your explanation sat all in place. We record voice, not environmant noise. With making voice clearer Shure is, of course, winner.

The Rode SmartLav+ sounded fuller and more pleasant to me. I also tried the new DJI Lavalier Mic in 2024 which has a TRS connector - it has a more bassy sound, some might say muddy, but it's still good IMO and reduces listening fatigue and sibilance. Overall my favourite is the Rode SmartLav+

Good review and your conclusion is correct I think - it's fairly obvious that the Shure is a better mic - a crisper more distinct clear sound . The Rode is "muddy" , muffled - doesn't have a good high frequency response.

Nice review! I recently bought the Shure MVL because the Rode SmartLav was on backorder on Amazon, Sweetwater, BH photo. What is going on? But, I am glad I did! I like the crisp highs and mids which gives a lot of clarity. The bag, clip and windscreen seem to be all of great quality to me. On the other hand, I do like the warm, rounded, lows in the Rode, which EQ can probably help. Also, I did notice on the Shure MVL manual, it did have the Freq. response graph, and it looks like there is a High Pass filter or curve on the mic's natural response. Which is no surprise the Rode sounds like it has more mid-lows. But, the Shure does help with filtering out the low rumble that could occur in all kinds of situations. But this was a great review! Thanks!

You've posted the perfect video at just the right time! I'm looking to vlog while riding a motorcycle so this is the perfect comparison. Your video is very thorough and you've done a great job segmenting it to make it easy to do an A/B compare. So thanks! I'll be buying the Shure via your link!
One question - did you find an appreciable difference between recording to the H1n or to your Samsung? I did not hear much of a difference.

    • @TotallydubbedHD
      @TotallydubbedHD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Glad I could help and that the video was helpful - that's the main thing for me, to help people out make the right decision.
The Samsung actually did record very well, but the issue was that it recorded almost in a mono sound; as such when it came to adding it to my video editor, the audio didn't look as clean as it did on the H1n; now would most people care, probably not; but if it's something you're going to use more professionally, I think the H1n would give you better jitter free audio and furthermore, will last forever on a single record vs the S10+.
Good question though, as it did cross my mind after I did the tests - let's just say I was pleasantly surprised by the results of the in-built recorder app of the S10+ :)

@@TotallydubbedHD there's a little difference if we're trying to nitpick. Basically I expected them to do great with outdoor noise. Bright or warm sound styles can easily be adjusted in post. Actually after watching your video I saw another video that compared the rode with an ebay mic $1 and the ebay mic did better even alot of people In the comment section agreed. th-cam.com/video/FvAufcSkzao/w-d-xo.html

@@truthseeker6804 not trying to nitpick, there's quite a bit of difference if you're going to use this for presenting (like I do) - the mid-range hump of the Rode can definitely be heard. But equally, some people prefer that sound signature.

Don't know how any mic will work with a USB-C input, so can't comment

Thank you! I Agree 100% with this comment "This is a very good example of how a video review should be done!" I have a question, Would it work if i connect any of those mics, with the SC3 Adapter, directly into a Audio Interface, more specifcaly the Motu UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid. Should i use phantom power to make it work? Thanks a lot.

Thank you, glad you liked the video!
As for your question, don't think you'll need anything other than the SC3, but I could be wrong.

I have an interesting question. I have an aftermarket radio with a crappy mic. Could I replace crappy mic with one of these? I would love to be able to have Crystal clear conversation over my car’s blue tooth system.

Really not sure how you'd do that, presume you'd need to do some wire work to get that to even work in the first place?
