He is allowed to hate the movie, but it honestly seems like he’s crapping on the disk because he does not like the film. If he can’t be objective about movies he does not like, can you trust his reviews for anything else?

There comes a point in collecting where love of the commodity overtakes love of the actual thing (be it art, films, comics, coins, stamps, etc). It's a real easy trap to fall into. You don't have to have everything to enjoy your collection. Personally, I blind buy a ton, but I blind buy based on reading the synopsis, knowledge of the filmmakers, word of mouth. Sometimes I get burned, but not often. What I don't do is blind buy based on trying to collect everything. That's a recipe for disaster.

This times 100. Bubba Ho-Tep is a pile of shit. It’s not a good movie. And I love Bruce Campbell. SELL IT, KEN! But I’ve gotta echo what was said above…blind buying itself is not your issue. For example, you’ve probably never seen “The Sand Pebbles” but it’s a masterpiece directed by Robert Wise. If it gets a 4K release that would be a blind-buy for you but it would be a no-brainer purchase. But buying ALL the scream factory releases just to have a “complete collection” clearly isn’t making you happy.

I’m absolutely shocked by this take. I adore this film. It’s one of Bruce Campbell’s finest hours, Ossie Davis is a riot, the score slaps… there’s so much going for it-not the least of which is the surprising amount of heart on display by the end. It’s easily Coscarelli’s most thoughtfully written and executed film, a funny, spooky, heartfelt film about regret, identity and mortality.

In my mind, nothing is more freeing than making the conscious decision to not collect for the sake of a label. These companies know what they’re doing. People love the idea of shelves and shelves of matching spines. When your collection better reflects your own personal interests and isn’t just blind tribalism you’ll be more happy in my opinion.

Bubba Ho-Tep is a buddy movie and not a horror movie. A quirky character movie. You made your mistake assuming it was a horror movie, the best part was for me was Ossie Davis' character thinking he was JFK. The two characters were the heart of the movie, I didn't care about the monster part, just the two men.

  • @TheOriginalFuzz

😆🤣 I would say Bubba Ho-Tep is an acquired taste for some. Many fans of Don Coscarelli's work (Phantasm, John Dies At the End, Beastmaster) appreciate his quirky, offbeat style in general... and that's exactly what we get with Bubba. But I totally get that it's not for everyone. As for blind purchases, I don't think there's anything wrong with blind buying overall. I think it just comes down to how much research and thoughtfulness the individual puts into the decision to buy a given title. I do a lot of blind buying, but I'm also careful about which titles I choose. I don't buy everything put out by any given label or line. I still prefer to curate, so I try not to buy titles unless I'm pretty damn sure I'm gonna like them -- or at least like them enough to not regret adding them to my collection. And I've had a good success rate so far... Haven't ended up with too many duds in my collection.

Hey Ken - I watch your content religiously and I’ve noticed that you do buy a lot stuff just for the sake of having it in the shelf looking pretty. I guess you could say that that’s the point of collecting, but I do think that the movie comes first. We’re all different type of collectors, of course. Personally, I buy movies to have them on my shelf so I can not only enjoy them by myself, but also with friends and family. Sometimes I buy movies because I know my girlfriend will like it, or my friends, and even if I don’t love the movie myself, I will still get it because I know I will have a great time watching it with them, because they enjoy it. I think that’s the only scenario where it’s okay to spend money in a movie that’s you don’t enjoy. Blind buying, or double dipping doesn’t sound very logical to me. But again, I understand that we are all different. Cheers brother, love your content.

The fatal flaw with Bubba has always been that Ossie was horribly miscast as JFK, when he should have instead been MLK. Duh! This decision was almost the very definition of a no-brainer, and yet they made the wrong choice by miles. Sure, Bruce does a great cheezy Elvis, but it doesn't save the film. It needs an audio redo - wherever JFK is mentioned make it MLK, etc. But that's just for starters.

As a person who only buys Blurays for movies I love, I feel like a lot of collectors on here buy for odd reasons (to me). They’ll be like, it has a slipcover! Never having seen the movie. No idea what it’s about or if they’ll even like it. They’ll buy classics they’ve never heard of. On new release Tuesdays, they just buy random stuff. It’s not even about actually watching the movie in the case, it’s just about…the case and how pretty it is. Oh it’s a 4K! Gotta buy it. I only buy movies I’ve seen and like.

I don't understand the multiple buying of the same movie on the same format, just because it has different artwork/slipcover/slipbox etc. Why do that? you can't watch two discs at the same time can you? and why would you if it's the same damn cut/version of the film. Wakanda Forever springs to mind here as we have a TH-camr who's based in the UK that does this and I was surprised when the aforementioned title came out he didn't double or triple dip on the film seeing as it had two different steelbook artworks on 4K and a slipcover on the non- Steelbook version and he usually gets two or more copies of the same film when this happens, that's nuts to me, he spent nearly £50 on the Wakanda Forever steelbook/slipcase edition ( to me it isn't worth that for what you get in, two art cards (not much else) then was prepared to spend another £25 on the slipcover standard 4k release.

The only other one I double dipped on Blu-ray was Spider-Man as I bought the Legacy Boxset of Spider-Man 1-3 and the Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2 forgetting that I already had the first Spider-Man already but as it was only £20 for all 5 films I didn't mind especially as I have different versions of Spider-Man 2 & 3 as well as the theatrical cuts of those films. Again I just don't get spending a lot of money on 2 exactly the same version of the film including extras just for different artwork/packaging, OK if you have the money I suppose but people's circumstances can change and I just hope that they're not that addicted to buying these things that if circumstances change for them it isn't detrimental to the more important things in life such as food, utility bills etc., that can lead to debt or more serious things.

Yeah some of these movies can be found on streaming somewhere, but there's something warmer about the experience of watching it on disc.. Little to no compression artifacts, not having to worry about buffering, and especially when it's a great transfer.
The movies I've seen that I know I want are typically very slow to get released, so blind buying sort of scratches the itch in the meantime.

After 2 years I don’t have any regrets. I had Bubba HoTep on dvd from MGM and upgraded to blu. Thought it was bizarre but i didn’t fully get it either. I upgraded because it’s bizarreness never left me and I figured I would want to revisit it one day. Then it had a cult following so don’t feel bad about keeping it. Won’t be getting 4K though. I have also not upgraded any Criterion’s to 4k. Especially since most of the upgrade reviews haven’t been unanimously favorable. So don’t feel bad, but don’t sell it! It will come up in 4-10 years and you will have an urge to see if it was as bad as you remember. The only company I can see faithfully collecting at this point is Kino Lorber 4k. Not only are than on average all almost reference video quality, there also just good ole Hollywood fare. No specialty groups, political agendas, artsy fare… just mainstream dramas westerns classics comedies action etc.

Won't pay $30 for any movie ever. Wait until they are much cheaper. Wouldn't pay money like that for a blind buy!

Here is one of my blind-buy stories: Demon Slayer. I heard that the movie, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, was one of the best Japanese films of all time. I bought it at Best Buy for $20 or so. Then, I read that I need to watch the show in order to understand the movie. I returned to Best Buy and bought Season One for $80. Season One was released in TWO packages. I tried -- really TRIED -- to get into the show...but I couldn't. I hated the characters and the repetitious nature of the show. Needless to say, I wasted about $100 on Demon Slayer. I sold all three packages on eBay, but I didn't make $100.

Yeah, buying for the slip artwork or because it's a steelbook is never a good reason to spend money on a DVD or Blu-ray you haven't watched or don't like. LoL.

I LOVE this movie. But only at a certain price. Coscarelli can be an acquired taste. I love the Phantasm franchise, like Bubba, but other films that people adore like Beastmaster or John Dies At The End, I don't care for

I blind bought a 50 dollar movie from Synapse and ended up really liking it. With that said, I blind bought 60 dollar movies before and ended up hating them. It's a risk reward. But I haven't been doing this as much anymore because most times, the movies suck.

I wasn't a fan of it either but it has a huge following. With blind buys I usually wait a few months and pick them up on Ebay for significantly less money. Once in a while they go out of print and I miss out but not too often.

Hey Ken maybe if you do blind buy again maybe you should just do it at the dollar store thrift stores and pawn shops or anywhere else where you can buy cheap stuff so you don't have to spend so much money on it and if you like any of your blind buys then you can upgrade the movie later

Plenty of times I rent movies off of TH-cam for $4.23 and then decide if they're worth buying on physical media. I rank every movie I watch and I'm working on just collecting my Top 1,000 movies of all-time. I watched the Physical Media Hall Of Fame video with Tony and he hasn't seen Back To The Future since 1985, I never want to get to that point. I have a lot of enjoyment from re-watching movies that I love!

Pretty sure we all have went through this phase as collectors, but you gotta realize that it really does become an addiction, just like everyone is saying focus on the movies and not the actual plastic case or cause it’s gonna look nice on a shelf, quality over quantity man, in reality how many times can you actually rewatch all those movies back there

I got burned too many times blind buying years ago because of sales or fomo etc. as collectors we want shelves full of movies but that’s at the expense of hoarding loads of shit. Now I only keep films I actually want to watch, I don’t have the time to watch a movie 8 times to decide if it’s going to stay in the collection.

I would recommend renting a movie for a couple of bucks and see if you even like it before considering adding it to your 4K collection and dishing out $30. Your 4k collection is supposed your most favorite movies!

I try to be more judicious about blind buying UHD releases; I've bought a couple I didn't like that I ended up selling. But I want to support the format, and when I watch a movie for the first time I want to see it in the best quality possible.

Agreed. I just bought The Menu because I saw it on HBO and loved it and wanted it in my collection, but there are a few movies that I want because of the cast/director or even source material.
