Great interview. Interesting he mentions that Jeff Porcaro was one of his best friends. Virgil is one of the best in the world for a reason, discipline, hard work, and no compromise in anything he does.
I’d love to know more about Virgils diet. I’m a massive fan of his drumming and music (obviously), but I’ve always been impressed with how healthy and physically fit he is. I know he works out whenever he can, but as someone who’s diet isn’t great... I’d love a bit of advice from the great man on what to eat to maintain such a healthy body and mind.
Virgil Donati is someone who I not only enjoy listening to his music, but also I would love to sit down and share a coffee with. He seems to be cool, smart, someone who thinks carefully every word. My kind of human being.
Living legend, ladies and gentlemen. This guy is like a 200 iq samurai on the drums. His technique is as close to flawless as this world has ever seen, and the stuff he comes up with... You could probably fit the people capable of comprehending all of his rhythimcal ideas in a single warehouse. There's a reason why they call him an alien. Most of us can't even comprehend half the stuff he plays.
Being from Melbourne Australia, I grew up in awe of Virgil, and always admired his powerful traditional grip. I tried copying it till today. He just blew my mind when he said if he had to start over he would go to matched grip.🤯 Virgil you make us drummers in Melbourne proud, I can't help but remember your amazing days in the mid 90s doing Drumtek clinics and being a superstar. Much love brother.✌
It's actually a quite common feeling. Jojo Mayer also said something very similar in his dvd and Thomas Lang simply abandoned Trad for Matched grip, he only uses it when doing clinics. It makes sense, since it's not a natural movement, but I do still appreciate it.

Lovely guy, that's why I'll be watching him in the future. I loved Virgil's playing with Holdsworth and all.
Mike is actually a great interviewer!! I like how when he asks a question he lets the artist respond without virtually any interruptions!
Really enjoyed this interview, thanks for sharing. Big fan from Sydney.
You know you’re winning as an interviewer when you can get Virgil Donati to admit “if I was to start over, I’d play matched.”

@@lul_9451 Thomas I believe had carpel tunnel surgery.
@@maxmery_drums But that doesn't have anything to do with his grip change, he said it himself.
Awesome interview
Virgil is the best ever
what an inspiring conversation!
Great interview, almost no mention of the word "Drums"... Shows the human side of being an artist!
Inspiring and Motivational !
Fuck developing my own voice, I want to play like Virgil!!!
Donati is like the Stephen Hawking of the drums.

Quality content!!!!!!! Awesome!
Wow awesome stuff👌
great stuff !
The background noise is just too much.
It cost me a serious effort to not stop watching after that cliché "here you are" opening :) Great conversation, nevertheless!
Wonder what supplements he takes..
I can tell you for sure that he takes a vegan multi-vitamin supplement!!
😭💙🙏🏻🥁
Great job here, the internal workings of an elite artist, over coffee! Watch and learn.
He seems so awkward... anyways great interview!
