Master of Wine: BEST BUYS AT TRADER JOE'S

  • In this video, Bob Paulinski Master of Wine looks for the best values from Trader Joe’s priced $10 to $20. Place of origin and its track record for bringing value, along with the vintage, wine style and availability were the key considerations. Four wines were selected, a sparkling, one white and two reds and of which will be tasted and discussed in this video.
    A few comments about wine at TJ’s, most stores have about 500 individual wine labels. Some are broadly sold national brands, others are from smaller artisanal sources, many are exclusive to TJs, with some being branded under their own corporate name. Price points range from about $3 to about $75, with the majority falling between $7 to $20. Some wines are sold year-round, but a good part of the mix changes up routinely with a high number of limited availability wines that come and go over the course of the year. And perhaps a bit surprisingly, should you choose to splurge, there’s always a good range Bordeaux from recent vintages, including a number of classified growths. CA Store pricing.
    Wine 1) La Burgondie Brut Reserve Cremant de Bourgogne NV $10.99
    www.wineenthusiast.com/buying...
    Wine 2) 2022 JL Quinson Chablis $16.99
    Wine 3) 2019 Satis Dei Vino de la Tierra de Castilla Syrah/Garnacha at $9.99
    Wine 4) 2022 Trading Post by Traders Joes Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley $19.99

    I live in Amador County in the Sierra foothills. Vineyards here, as well as in Lodi, sell a ton of grapes to Napa makers who pass it off for their own. We grow great fruit here and the local vintners make some tremendous wines.

    Phew, the Spanish one's gonna be tough to find, I don't think I've ever seen it. Sounds like a Grenache-Syrah version of an elegant Ribera del Duero. The others I can forget about finding! Cheers Bob, have a nice time in the holidays! I'll be visiting Rias Baixas in a few days, hopefully get my hands on some of those forgotten red grapes in the area!

    These types of videos are helpful both for wine geeks and casual drinkers alike, as it disproves the tired notion that one has to spend $$$ to find decent or good wines. Cremant often offers incredible value for money, especially at the Reserve Level and a good Chablis for under 20 US$ anywhere in the world is a steal. Being back in Europe now, Aldi and Lidl have a pretty decent selection of wines and trading up we have Tesco and Auchan for a wider selection, albeit slightly higher prices. Cheers, Bob!

    Thank you, Bob! Will check these out on my next trip to Trader Joe's. Far from being an expert oenophile, I somehow always luck up with solid pics. I have purchased the Satis Dei several times, and it is often in my rotation. My "staple" wine is the Puerta de Plata Reserva. It is a bottle that I can enjoy and know that I will not end up with a headache the next day 🤣. Wishing you the best in 2024!

    Thank you Bob, I really enjoy your video's a lot. Your presentation is top notch, subtle humor (throwing corks behind you after opening a bottle) is fun, and they are really entertaining and informative. The information you give is easy to understand and really valuable to us wine value seekers. The Costco and TJ values are my must go to always since I think a lot of us do our wine purchasing there, but all of your content is really good stuff. I used to love wineking, really miss Peter and Dr. Pat, but you are filling that gap now, so just wanted to say thank you and happy holidays, keep up the great work.

    I buy most of my wine at Costco, where the selection and values are fantastic. This lets me try expressions that otherwise would be above my usual range. I go to Trader Joe's to fill in the gaps with interesting but less-popular varietals that Costco doesn't carry. My experience with Trader Joe's is more hit or miss, though.

      @@bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234I am a retired Long Islander, living in Jacksonville, Florida. We have an OCEAN of wine here. It is sold almost everywhere that beer is sold, and gallons of it are marked on sale. Even gas stations have wine racks. Most of it, of course, is from the big commercial labels I have no idea who is buying and drinking all of this stuff. My wife and I are far out on the wine-drinking bell curve. When we host dinners and parties, though, wine is not a big mover…

    I did the opposite of hunting for value and splurged on a gourmet restaurant with wine pairing yesterday. Two wines stood out as especially good and interesting. One petnat from Catalonia, Clot de les Soleres and one Hungarian dry Furmint by Gilvesy. The Furmint was deceptively close to a Riesling, which is a win, of course.

    • @bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234
      @bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Interesting. I’m generally not a Pet Nat fan, but I’m open to trying others. Dry Furmint can be amazing. To me, many have a green tea character with outstanding acidity.

    Another great video..
    Nice group of wines.
    Out of curiosity,when you are looking at color,can you tell when a producer is using 'mega purple' ( or any other color enhancer ),or is it difficult to tell visually?
    I also just read that some producers add extra powered tannin to their wine.?. How prevalent is this?

    • @bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234
      @bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks, I glad to like it. Sometimes, but not always mega purple can be recognized. If a heavy hand is used, it can be noticeable at the rim of the glass. Powdered tannin is occasionally used but no one will admit it. Mostly linked to cheap wines.
