  • Recently TheHDAviation hit a major milestone, 1,000,000 views! Here is a very special compilation to say thank you :-D
    This video features numerous scenes of the Royal Canadian Air Force de Havilland Canada DHC-5 Buffalo CC-115. In this compilation you can see numerous awesome STOL takeoffs and landings as well as some parachute drops and some paratroopers in flight! You can also see and hear the engines start up and some vortices. The CC-115 is one of the largest, and most impressive planes that visits Nelson (CZNL) and I am very glad I have had the opportunity to view it quite a few times.
    I hope you all enjoy this compilation and thanks for supporting my channel along the way!

    The Caribou and the Buffalo were two of the finest aircraft ever built. It doesn't rotate it levitates. That is the only aircraft I've ever seen take off nose down at lift off.

    Turbopropping a herc! What a great way of ensuring more life from such a useful airframe! I wish the RAAF had done so instead of scrapping and museuming ours! An airframe that still can't easily be replaced

      I think you meant turbopropping a "Caribou".Hercs were turboprops from the get-go.We should have got our Caribou converted to Buffalo specs at the time,both aircraft have excellent S.T.O.L abilities and multi role capabilities.The Caribou was loved by it's crews and the soldiers it carried!🇦🇺🫡

    After working on the Buffalo line, I transfered to Flight Service as a F.S. Engineer; and my first assignment was taking the D.H.C-6 "Twotter" off the final assy. line, doing the fuel flows, first lights, engine runs, compass swings and so forth to prepare it for flight.
    When it was ready, we put a pilot in it; (frequently George Neal), for him to do his 'thing'.
    Once he signed off the A.I-100, we prepared it for delivery.
    I got a little 'hands-on' time on it, and if the Buffalo is 'MAACHIINE', then the Twin Otter is 'maashiine'!
    WOW!

    I worked the Dash-7 line in 84-85 and while screwing the pooch one day climbed into the lower cockpit access door and took a nap in a Buffalo that we had in the hangar. Snooping around the huge facilities, we found a Augmentor Wing Buffalo in another hangar who's cargo bay seemed to be mostly filled with what looked to us like main-frame computer cabinets. Fine old memories.

    I believe that the DYC Buffalo was built at the DeHavilland Canada factory in Malton ( suburb of Toronto ). Apparently DeHavilland won the U.S. Army contract competition to find a turboprop troop/cargo carrier that could fly in and out of very shorts airstrips cut out of the Vietnamese jungle. DeHavilland has been a great innovator of STOL technology. I wonder if they will ever build the “Buff” ever again ?

    With full flaps the plane creates more lift than the angle of attack. It also looks like with all the lift they literally have got fly it into the ground. It is quite a sight to see it perform.

    • @dhc5tech41

      +taylorowner the flaps actually control the elevator trim tab via cables to force the nose down when they are down.(only airplane I know of that does that) 22 years as a tech on these great planes.

    That was a cool effect when it took of the first time how the props started spinning like that. What happened here? Is it about the camera I think right?

    • @TheHDAviation
      @TheHDAviation  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's actually some kind of condensation that the props create when they are spinning in the right weather conditions. I'm not sure the exact reason it happens but it sure looks interesting!

    • @coriscotupi
      @coriscotupi 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are vortexes at the prop tip. The exact same thing happens to wing tips, flap tips, helicopter rotor tips. Just about any airfoil creating lift produces those vortexes at the tips, as high-pressure air is spilled around the tip as it tries to flow toward the area of lower pressure (AKA induced drag). In the right temperature/humidity conditions, the vortexes become visible.
